@canonj

The Nintendo Direct alluded to only two, but it seems there's still room for a third so I suspect the demo will have two but the normal Splatfests will have three like in the past.

Awesome you're ready to join us, or will be! I wonder if we can play with friends for the demo or not.

The Splatfest was fun, but I gotta say, this really feels more like Splatoon 1.5 than Splatoon 2. And I'm not usually the kind that goes around shouting "level pack!!" I was an ardent defender of the greatness that is Super Mario Galaxy 2. But Splatoon's bread and butter--the multiplayer matches--barely feel improved at all. The lobbies still take forever, there's still no way to change equipment in them, there're still disconnects, and they still do nothing to balance the game (with an AI opponent at least) when someone from your team or the other team disconnects. The new weapons and arenas are cool, but that's like the bare minimum I'd expect for a sequel.

All that said, I'm definitely getting it next week. The core gameplay is still a lot of fun and I find this franchise to be very charming. But considering how innovative and groundbreaking the original was, I was hoping for a little more effort in sealing up its cracks. Hopefully when the full game comes out I'll enjoy the extra stuff more, like Salmon Run.

@TriforceBun I mean, wasn't it always obvious this was 1.5? When it was announced people weren't even sure if it was a real sequel, and the "2" felt a bit arbitrary.
07/16/17, 07:44
The Splatfest didn't feel like a fully fledged sequel, no, but I'm still hoping the new modes and the single player will help remedy that a little bit. It ticked me off a little bit when my nephew who has his parents buy him the new FIFA every year barged in and said the game was unnecessary 'cause it was exactly the same as the original.

"You listen here, you little shit..."

I'll be that guy but…. let the game release for God's sake!

There's a ton of new weapons coming which do things they haven't done before, stages feature new hazards and designs, the single player mode is expanded and fleshed out, and there is at least Salmon Run, if not more new stuff.

Since when is a standard sequel a '1.5' just because it shares similarities. Nobody has complained about such a thing except maybe for Galaxy and Galaxy 2, which, eh, to me is a sequel. I do not feel this is just some DLC that adds to the existing package. That's just me I suppose.

I'm off on a week-long vacation and then I'll get to come back and enjoy this sequel for all it's fun and uniqueness. So I hope it grows on you folks and have a nice week!

Idk, it looks as much like a sequel as I'd expect it to look. What else is it supposed to look like? It has new maps, new weapons, new abilities. New single player. Salmon Run. New UI tweaks.

Given the Switch's horsepower compared to Wii U, it's not surprising that the game looks very similar to the first one. This is what we should expect from Switch games - they will look marginally better than their Wii U counterparts. (Don't take that the wrong way, it still runs really smoothly and looks great).

@DrFinkelstein
Sorry, I may have jumped the gun a bit. I am under the assumption that since the game is finished and releases next week, the Splatfest would be a good indication of how turf war matches would go. But the package as a whole can't really be judged until it comes out, of course.

I guess I should say that these are my impressions so far, and I certainly enjoyed the game itself, but I was hoping for something a bit more like the jump from Smash 64 to Melee. I think the visuals and sound are great, but I'm really an options guy when it comes to games like this. I guess I will find out for sure once it releases next week!

The sequel 1.5/2 thing is really probably its own separate topic.

Didn't mean to poo all over a game that's not even out yet though.

@DrFinkelstein 1.5 is just a vague way to say "this doesn't feel like a huge step up". I'd use it to describe a LOT of sequels, to be quite honest.

Not Galaxy 2 though, that was a brand new huge game with new moves AND like 80 new levels or something.

Good stuff, but considering how iffy my ISP and Switch can be when it comes to maintaining a decent signal this does not bode well for me. Still, good for the game overall, IMO.
07/16/17, 23:46
@r_hjort To be honest I think it's a bad idea, especially since Switch Internet is iffy + Switch is meant to be portable which means a lot of people will be playing from some iffy connections.

Isn't there a much easier solution with matchmaking that doesn't completely screw people with bad connections? Just put all the regular "quitters" together?
07/17/17, 16:48
@Zero
Well, how would you go about sorting the quitters from the others? I don't really care about quitters in regular matches, but for ranked matches I think there should be some penalties for rage quitting and/or hacking.
07/17/17, 17:08
Got disconnected a bunch as well, over the span of an hour. That didn't happen on Wii U. And I've just moved to a new appartment where there should be less Wi-Fi interference: fewer neighbors. Kind of crummy.
07/17/17, 17:19
@r_hjort ? Nintendo obviously knows who they are, if they're banning them. Just try to pair quitters with quitters whenever possible.

@Guillaume Me too, though luckily it never happened in match, just in the menus. This happens to me a lot though. And it doesn't always come back on its own, sometimes I need to go into the Switch Internet menu and reconnect. Switch wifi sucks hard for some reason.

@Guillaume

The other Testfire worked way better so it could just be that they had an overload a bit. Hopefully resolved for the final game.
07/17/17, 18:06
@Zero
Ah, now I see what you mean, not sure what I thought that you meant before. Yeah, that could be a solution I guess.

The Testfire actually seemed to work better for me this time than the first, but I think the first one might have been before the update that fixed the worst wifi problems I had, so that might not be saying much. Either way I agree that Switch's wifi needs some fixing. It's pretty much the only thing I don't like about the thing.
07/17/17, 18:18
I got bumped twice, but I got in two matches (I was only online for a whopping 15 minutes of the Splatfest). When I was locked into a match, I didn't get bumped and it looks really nice on my TV. Plus my team won both matches (and the Splatfest over all...Team Ice Cream all the way).
07/17/17, 19:47
Man, I had a hell of a lot of fun during the Splatfest. I don't think I've ever participated in one of these. The virtual rave aesthetic was great. And, once I started maining the Splattershot and Splat Dualies, I was actually doing pretty decently. Even with a long break in the middle to accommodate the Air Conditioner Repair guy, I made it to Champion. I got booted a few times, but the actual gameplay was very smooth, even with half of the time spent playing through a borrowed Xfinitywifi signal on my porch!

Now that I've gotten the good stuff out of the way... I have to say that the Universe has never felt more Twilight Zone to me than during this Splatfest. Cake is, like, my favorite thing in this world. To be casually scoffed at by the ignorant, misguided ice cream mainstream... I'm not going to lie. It hurt. But, even more than that, I feel sorry. Sorry for you crazy ice cream people! Repent, before it's too late!

SMG2 is 10x the 1.5 sequel more than Splatoon 2 is. What?

Splatoon 2's visuals are actually quite a bit better.
SMG2 kinda pissed on 1's presentation (Lubba was trash, really), the music was worse IMO (still had several stellar tracks though obviously), the visuals were the same, but yeah, I guess it had a bunch of new levels. But the same can be said of Splatoon 2 and more.

If Splatoon 2 is a 1.5 than SMG 2 is unquestionably a 1.5.
