That's right friends and fighters, Nintendo's newest IP is finally out. The Testpunches are punched and the games are in the mail. Mine arrived today and any moment I'll be diving into the full experience. With a launch that held mixed receptions, Nintendo has done a great job at building the hype around this title and the hype is planned for many months to come. With planned free DLC in the vein of Splatoon, they'll be supporting new characters, stages, and maybe even modes for the rest of the year. With a starting roster of 10 awesome characters, who takes your heart in particular? Ribbon Girl was tied in first for both of our Testpunch polls with Min Min sharing the spot for the first round and the curvaceous Twintelle sharing it in the second. Mechanica and Ninjara were not too far behind.

I plan to be dabbling in a little bit of single player to explore that a bit, but you'll all be seeing me online soon enough! Have fun out there! Wear your mouth piece!

Managed a cheeky Grand Prix with Kid Cobra at level 3 today. Things started to click about halfway through, I really dig it. Still not sure about all the special abilities yet. Should really look into that as I'm entering a regional competition tomorrow night!
Winner gets through to a UK-wide comp.

They will tremble when they hear I'M LEVEL 3!!!

That tune is catchy! I find myself singing/humming it all the time. Can't wait to play my copy. Will have to wait until tomorrow unfortunately, other plans for tonight.

@cooliocuneo

The second I got home today I started belting out in song singing that song. For like a good couple minutes, lol. It is super catchy. I wonder who composed it. Just damn brilliant.

@Super_Conzo

Good Luck Conzo!

Plans have changed. Or at least the first part of the evening. I'm in playing with totally original internet handle of "John" :)

This videogame is something special.

Nintendo is on some other shit.

I wanna give this game a 10 right now.

@nate38
Haha - our lame-o regionals? No way. But the finals are at a big gaming festival called Insomnia. They will be live-streamed.

I'll post some pics to Twitter tho

Need to eek out an hour to try a harder level today before the showdown. Also, reading about Min Min's specials make we wanna main her.

Good luck, Conzo!
06/17/17, 12:57
@Super_Conzo Haha, you never know. Some rinky dink local Smash tournament I went to was streamed on Twitch, I even got a handful of my matches streamed and then uploaded to Youtube lol.

Looking forward to pics!

The game is pretty sweet, BUT...

After jumping in and acing my first Grand Prix at Level 2, I confidently decided to skip to Level 4, so that I could unlock Ranked Matches. Everything was going pretty smoothly until the last, last guy. And, by the way, FUCK that guy. I spent about two hours replaying him before I won, since I didn't want to lose my progress. And it occurs to me only NOW that your Grand Prix progress is actually saved when you exit! AAAGGGHH!

Anyway, I'm definitely going to workshop a bit before taking him on again.

@Super_Conzo
Good luck, man!

I'm having a lot of fun. It's definitely a workout. Can't wait to try some local muti. Looks like you can take local online as well. I kept seeing *player name* and *player name #2* That's my assumption anyway. Can anyone confirm?
06/17/17, 20:30
@cooliocuneo
Yeah, you can jump online with two players.

I like the motion controls for punching, but I wish that I could feel more comfortable with them for maneuvering. Hey, did you guys know that you can switch from motion to traditional mid-match? Just hold the controllers parallel to each other. Crazy!

@Anand
Isn't the Quit option actually called "Save and Quit?"
06/18/17, 01:21
Ok, I ran through the training drills and tried all of the modes. Some of those training scenarios are freaking tough! But it's good to practice fighting against a double Megaton user or a throw-spamming Ninjara. I still can't quite figure out how to use the Counter effectively, though. I thought that it would be an automatic attack, but it kind of warps you forward a bit, instead.

I'm pretty impressed at the amount of modes and the amount of options (including difficulty and multiplayer configuration) for each. I only wish that there were handicapping options. I know that auto-handicapping is an option in Party Mode, but how about split-screen and local multi? I'd also love a local Tournament option, like in Brawl.

1 Vs. 100 was fairly challenging! Couldn't beat it with motion, but I barely squeaked by with the Pro. I wish switching targets were more intuitive, though. Like flicking the Pro Controller left and right, perhaps?

Anyway, have you guys tried the ARMS Test mode? It's basically like a Survival Mode, except actually fun, since there's no Game Over. It just automatically adjusts the difficulty when you win or lose and keeps track of your longest Win Streak. Also, you choose your character, but the game randomly chooses three ARMS every round, which adds a bit of spice. Kind of like that random club mode in Mario Golf, but less annoying. Ooo, I wonder if picking a random character changes your character every round... Probably not. Two-Player ARMS Test would be nice in the future.

I still haven't even gone online yet. I'm not good with humility...

Totally loving this game, though! It's so freaking good! It's probably the most interesting fighting game since Smash and Power Stone. And, unlike most traditional fighting games (such as freaking Mark of the Wolves), fighting the AI is actually enjoyable (on the reasonable difficulties). The presentation is amazing, as well.

I can't wait to bring it on the road for spontaneous throwdowns with everyone I know. It's going to be such an awesome game for smack-talking!

@ploot
Quiet, you!

I saw some of you guys online in Party Mode. I guess the game automatically puts friends in your party, if there's room? Which is awesome.

I had a lot of fun online. You make a lot more money than in single-player! The handicapping feature that cuts your health and increases your payout when you're doing well is cool, but it can really screw you sometimes. By the way, sorry for turtling up in those three-ways with Master Mummy, but I was starting at freaking 50% Health!

The funniest moment came when I healed up the whole match while MrBiggsly (or was it Conzo?) barely survived a tense standoff with the third party. Then, the instant he finished him off and started turning towards me, I sucker-punched him in the side of his head with a charged Megaton for a one-hit KO. So evil and cowardly. I actually LOL'ed!

Paulo was in my room for a bit, too, but we never got matched up.

I love how, in Party Mode, bitter enemies become trusted allies, before becoming bitter enemies again. It's such a fluid continuum. I definitely carried some 1 v 1 grudges into the three ways.

This game is so good, you guys, seriously. You know what FOMO is? You guys are MO. Join the party!

I was wondering how it could tell! That is so cool.

This game is really fun, not sure if I've played any of you guys on there yet (I'm Jarsh). Fabien and Pauloot and my sister all jumped on tonight and had a blast. I definitely need to train more!

ARMS TOURNEY UPDATE:

12 combatants entered... only 3 emerged with a miniature trophy and a share-size box of Maltesers. I'm proud to say, I was one of those 3

So I placed 3rd. I'm pretty happy with that. Couple of teens took 1st and 2nd. I think that is as it should be. If some middle-age Dad had of shown up in '97 and owned me at Goldeneye there would have been a MFing inquest!

It was a fun night overall and I think my home city is finally developing a bit of a Nintendo community. All thanks to Switch!

Some things to note from the night:
- Nobody chose The Clockwork Cops or Helix.
- The winner used Mechanica all night. 2nd place, Ribbon Girl. Me swapping between Min Min & Kid Cobra. There were about 4 Ninjara players.
- Height/Air-game was my downfall. I didn't realise it was such an advantage.
- There was a woman who was playing the game like it was Wii Boxing. Just chugging those arms from beginning to end. She took me to the frickn' wire!!! That was scary.

It was me, ya big jerk! You did pretty much the same in the previous three-way only from atop a hover platform. Grrr. Things had started so swimmingly too in our tethered match

I had to quit after that and focus on my level 4 Grand Prix. I was totally stuck on the 7th fight until I switched to standard controls. This has been a revelation for me. With motion controls I am the king of throwing both arms at the same time by accident Mr Flinchy here! But after 2 attempts with non-motion I felt I had much better control. Feel bad sayin' it tbh. And hey, maybe I'll return to motion once I have a better understanding of the mechanics but for now the future is boring standard controls.

@Super_Conzo
25th percentile! Pretty good, man.

Haha, so it was you? Sorry for Chicago-styling on you... But 50% health!

I also play waaaay better with standard controls. Motion punching is fun, but moving and jumping and dashing around are so much easier on the Pro.

After getting skunked in 1 v 100, I switched to motion and (barely) beat it in one try.

@Marsh
Yeah, I tested it out. Pretty cool.

It's also cool how the system knows which color the Joy Con are. N64 flashbacks.
