@TriforceBunI think the colours go up based on the total number of enemies you kill too, not the specific type. Or possibly game progress (dungeons). I avoided the Lynels for ages too like Zero did, and by the time I went to start trying to kill them, there were no red ones to be found except the quest one in Zora's Domain. They were all blue or white. And very soon after I started farming, they went all white with a scattering of silver. My favourite tactic was to A) Stun (and damage) them them with Urbosa's FuryB) Use heaviest hitting two handed weapon I could find and launch a charge attack, which results in that whirlwind spin. C) Smack the Lynel again and again untill he finally gets up from the stun, then release the charge to hit him with another Urbosa's Fury- Repeat. For even better results, combining the above with the Barbarian armour set enables 50%+ damage and less stamina use during the charge attack. It's a bit high risk, high reward, sometimes on making the approach I'd get constantly hit trying to initiate the opening attack, or I'd misjudge my stun lock. But it works pretty nicely to inflict massive damage quickly. |

Welp, I finished.
155+ hours 300+ korok seeds 120 shrines all memories
So yeah. The ending felt maybe a bit underwhelming, although I guess it would have been tough to make anything not feel a bit underwhelming as a cap to such a huge quest.
Overall I'd say I loved it, of course. So big and amazing. Finding and playing through shrines is probably the best part. The world is like nothing else. A lot of us have been wanting a Zelda game with an overworld ripe for exploration, and boy did we get one. So many of the new systems feel very good as well, like the weapon / battle system, and it would be hard to imagine them going away in the future. This might just be the new standard for Zelda moving forward.
But it's not perfect in my eyes. Probably a bit too big, got some fatigue at times, would have liked a tighter experience. I mean, a lot of the korok seeds and platform fights and mini-bosses and such start to feel derivative over time anyway, could have cut some of that out. I also feel like it was lacking a lot of the um... emotional resonance? of other Zelda games. In some ways it's just pure, raw gameplay, which is fine, but I missed having feels as well. And there didn't seem to be many memorable characters in the game, even Skyward Sword had some neat stuff with Groose and such. Needed more enemy variety. Also would prefer better (and bigger) dungeons and boss fights (not having them all essentially look the same might help too.)
Also there is no real build to anything. You just kind of run around doing whatever you feel like for a long, long time until you do the end. No story progression, no real gameplay progression either. Just a bunch of different things.
It's actually tough to place this among other Zelda games. It may be my second favorite after Link to the Past. Certainly top 3. But it is lacking a lot of what I love about past Zelda games, while making it up bigtime in other ways like finally giving us an awesome overworld... mind you now the whole game is basically the overworld.) I think now my ideal future Zelda game combines the best of both types and just nails it out of the park.
But honestly, this was a long game. I'm not sure I need another Zelda anytime soon. Would prefer that they really take their time and make the next one have its own feel instead of rushing out a sequel. |

That's the thing really. I feel like pretty much every other Zelda game is a tighter experience. Link to the Past has NO fluff really, every part is sweet. Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, had parts where I started feeling burnt out and such. But then, it's also amazing what they accomplished in such a huge and interesting world.
Hard to really compare the two. I will say this though, the reason it isn't *quite* up there for me with games like Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 (and for that matter Link to the Past) is that the moment to moment engagement in those was higher for me, even if they weren't quite as long and EPIC. And it's tough to know how to compare a game that comes in and is brilliant in a broader way, possibly the most engaging 100+ hour game I have ever played, but doesn't have quite the same moment to moment impact for me.
I'd even say that something like Twilight Princess was more interesting moment to moment for me, perhaps. At least, the first half of it was. I think. It's tough to remember back. But I remember feeling like the first half of Twilight Princess was nearly perfect Zelda, had it continued for the second half it might be tough to place Breath of the Wild above it.
I do love this "overworld" though. I just hope they find a way to keep what makes it great while getting back to some bigger and better dungeons / boss fights and such. Which I doubt is even their plan, but a man can dream. A man can dream.
Still, don't want to make it sound like I didn't love it. It's certainly one of the best games I've played and I gave it a rare 9.9, which actually is the same score that I gave Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4, but I'd give those a small edge. It's like a low 9.9 for me (maybe we should move to a 1000 point scoring system people would love that, RIGHT?) |
