General amiibo Discussion Thread

amiibo is certainly turning out to be a big thing in Nintendo's eyes. Whether or not the rewards for utilizing each amiibo is worthy to you, Nintendo plans to implement all sorts of bonuses. It appears right now that every amiibo is meant to do 'something' in each game though games not featuring certain characters may have more limited uses or lesser-valued ones. We've had plenty of threads on here for amiibo and I'm sure that will continue. Still, I wanted to establish a general discussion thread that doesn't have a specific focus or thought. We'll also use this thread for informing the forums about upcoming news regarding new waves of amiibo or new compatibility. Enjoy! Tell us which amiibo you're planning to get! To get the party started, here are the various waves of amiibo on their way, compatibility information from Nintendo's website, and various links to other threads regarding amiibo.

Need to update the original post with the new ones! :)

Anyway, today I got the Link Archer Amiibo. I have now sworn off buying amiibo twice and failed twice. First failure was when I found Pit after searching (and giving up) for like two years. This time it was because oh my gosh Link Archer Amiibo is the prettiest amiibo I've ever seen. As art, the pose, colors, style, everything is amazing. Plus couple that with the fact that it reminds me of the feeling I'm currently having playing BotW (awe and joy) I figured if I saw it on my shelf years from now at the very least it would bring back those lovely memories. Glad I fell off the wagon again, ha ha.

EDIT: Also, can we talk about how they made the stability-bit artistic ("wind" looking) and styled rather than ugly clear plastic ugliness? Um, YES PLEASE. The giant clear pole sticking out of Captain Falcon's crotch, for example, is terrible design, particularly by comparison to the beauty above.

Nice. Yeah, this batch of Legend of Zelda amiibo are definitely very well done. The first Smash Link was pretty ugly, especially with that yellow support bar, so I didn't want it. I figured they'd make some others at some point, so I'm glad I waited. Of course, the problem now is that there are so many Link amiibo, I dunno which one I want! (And I'm just going to get one... honest...)

@Mop it up

I say get the one that reminds you of the best Zelda experience you've had, so when you look at it you are instantly reminded of some amazing experience.

For me, this Link Archer says "Hey, remember sniping Guardians right after you got the Ancient Arrows and feeling like a superhuman (superelf?) because it instantly exploded?! That sure was great!"

And my other Link amiibo, Wind Waker style, reminds me of my beloved Wind Waker style.

The three new Link Amiibos are all awesome, must get. Man I've lost track of how many freaking Links I own!

@J.K. Riki
I really hate the plastic supports, I feel like they should be designed to stand on their own. That said I agree the way the handled archer Link and Epona look a million times better than the early Smash series with their super ugly plastic supports. Those are hideous.

EDIT: looking at the 3 new Links the one of the right has some clear plastic by his feet, uhhhh..... why did they do that? The other 2 look a million times better!

EDIT 2: that master shield looks amazing though.

@deathly_hallows

As an animator, I understand the desire to choose poses that are dynamic and suit the character, hence I understand the designs that requires supports. And I also agree with you about the new supports vs. old ones!

I was thinking about that earlier, actually. Could they have designed the ones that have suck-supports (Captain Falcon, Fox, etc) so they were just as good pose-wise but didn't need those awful plastic bits? I'm not sure, to be honest. I would like to THINK so, but just unsure. What I do know is I don't want every one of them to mimic Pac-Man, which I find uber boring.

(Also whoever designed original Luigi, pose and all, needs fired.)

@J.K. Riki
With any artistic endeavor you have constraints, and those constraints don't mean you have to compromise the quality of your work, it just means you need to come up with clever solutions. Often times the best art is a result of working within limits.

IMHO one of the design constraints of creating a figure for a character is that it needs to stand on it's own, so the trick is to come up with poses that are dynamic and fun yet stable. Cheating with plastic supports is a losing proposition because it destroys the artistic integrity and visual cohesiveness of the work. Can you imagine if the wonderful sculptures of Rodin couldn't support themselves without the help of ropes or wooden scaffolding? Sure he could have done different poses, would they have been better though? Not IMO.

The problem with the Smash series is that they were designed to match the in-game poses on the select screens and in promos and such, and I don't think they created those poses with the amiibo in mind. So they needed to have some more foresight on that one.

Also, does Link now have more amiibo than Mario?! Crazy!
04/13/17, 23:46
@Mop it up
Exactly, they made the decision that matching the game was more important than how they looked as physical objects, not the right decision IMO but it was understandable why they did it that way. I think in the beginning they probably didn't realize how wide the appeal would be and that plenty of people who don't play Smash would still be interested in buying them just for the toy aspect.

@deathly_hallows

Oh I hear ya, I'm just thinking in terms of that many characters with no repeats. Example, look at the three new Links coming. While well crafted, none are nearly as dynamic and exciting as Archer Link from BotW, and even the far right one which is the best pose requires ugly little clear bits. To give them all dynamism (not just one, but ALL, and how many amiibo are there now, like 80?) is another level of artistic/engineering challenge that personally I wouldn't want because it would suck to do, lol. So when I say "I wonder if it could be done" I don't mean could in the literal sense, more so the figurative "how much pain and suffering would be required to pull off every amiibo being posed well sans-plastic security bits."
04/13/17, 23:52
@J.K. Riki
Honestly the archer Link is my least favorite of the BOTW series specifically because I think the pose is awkward and I think the weird white foam spewing from his feet looks creepy and draws way too much attention to itself. So I guess to me it's not worth the trade off.
04/13/17, 23:55
@deathly_hallows

Beautiful thing about art, many people can have a variety of opinions.

From an animation standpoint, it is far and away the strongest of the poses in the BotW line. Tied, perhaps, with the horse one. In terms of "what one person likes" though, hey, to each their own.

@J.K. Riki
Yup! Different strokes and all that.

THE BEST!:

@deathly_hallows

She is pretty cute! I was very tempted by that one as well, lol. But you have to draw the line somewhere, and I've reached my amiibo limit.

You make a good argument, but I'm afraid I'm not going to buy any more amiibo any time soon, sorry.

Yes, that is a valid point, but I must insist, my amiibo purchases are on hold for the foreseeable future.

True, true, that is a nice Zelda figure. Top to bottom, even with a slightly boring pose.

Indeed. You've convinced me. I have to go to Target now, excuse me.
04/14/17, 01:44
@J.K. Riki

I'm up to 111, I think, and I'm missing a few. Yowzas, that's a lot. Also, I agree that dynamic poses are rad. I don't even mind the plastic holders at all.
04/14/17, 02:02
@J.K. Riki

Yeah I had that feeling. Then I remembered the sinking feeling of running out of super expensive Ancient Arrows and being completely boned again.
...Then I found I could ruin their shit with the Master Sword, and I cared not for Ancient Arrows anymore lol.

It's still a great pose though.

@deathly_hallows

That reminds me, I need to catch up on yesterday's direct. Small clar support thingies aside, I do like the overall lok of that third one. I'll see if I can snag it when it hits.

I like how I've still fallen into the 'collector's mentality but managed to limit it to mostly Zelda Amiibo's lol. Oh and Dark Pit.
04/14/17, 04:40
@Shadowlink
Yeah I'm definitely going to buy every Zelda amiibo, but probably not much else, maybe one to two from Mario Odyssey, if they're really cool.

I'd also buy any Metroid themed ones, if they ever make em lol.
04/14/17, 14:59
I apparently have no limit on amiibo. I took my kids to GameStop today and pre-ordered every new amiibo available.

I wonder if I need help. Like, "amiibo Anonymous" or something. I'm just collecting these cool-looking figurines, I'm not even using them in the games! (except for the Mega Man one for Mega Man Legacy Collection)
04/15/17, 22:29
@GameDadGrant

Yes, you have a problem.

But I won't judge. Ever since buying the Link Archer one and defending the validity of amiibo functionality here, I want to go buy more, lol.
04/20/17, 07:00
Man... It's just a plastic toy but I am bummed. The Metroid-2pack released last week and I was wondering where the heck my shipment was at. I hadn't seen notifications about it. Turns out those months ago I pre-ordered it I had done so as a store pickup and they've ALREADY fucking released the pre-order as of 1am this morning. So I suppose there's a chance I can call them at 10 but who knows. Everywhere else is selling it for $60 bucks right now because nobody has legit stock and it's just price gougers. What a bummer way to start the morning. I've been so busy at work and home that my brain wasn't fully looking for amiibo and now I'll pay that price. I didn't get a text which would have been nice and again, somehow my e-mails for it never showed up as new or in my face. I must have some dumb filter that those got caught in. Blah.

@DrFinkelstein

I may have just nabbed one from Store.Nintendo.com. I need to call and verify something with them but I have an order number.

If you need this, go get it from there!!
