Will you primarily use the Grip or just freehand the Joy Con? [roundtable]

I will never, ever, ever use the Joy Con Grip. I mean, never say never, but NEVER.

The ability to use detached controllers with an even greater degree of freedom of movement than the Wiimote & Nunchuk might be my favorite feature of the Switch. Man, do I miss loungin' on the couch and groovin' on some games, Koizumi-style. When I saw that part of the presentation, I cheered internally. It is how I will play every game. No more holding my hands rigidly together in front of myself like an uptight goddamned robot.

Free at last, Free at last, Thank God(s) Almighty, We Are Free At Last!

How about you guys? 'Core' Gamers may scoff, but you've experienced the two-handed gospel. Do you, like me, yearn for that Wiimote & Nunchuk feeling?

Joy Con freehand style. I did a poll of pretty much this subject not too long ago.

Hadn't reached the second page yet...

@Anand Haha, no worries :) I know you love your "roundtables". What the hell is the difference between a normal thread and a roundtable anyways?

@cooliocuneo
Hmm... This discussion could get real philosophical-like.

Roundtables are questions thrown out for group discussion. Except yours was a poll, which is pretty similar. I think Roundtables are actually public. That's not why I make them, though. I just love Roundtables.

Anyway, don't worry about it. You just keep to your threads. Leave the Roundtables to me!

Why use the Joycon Grip when the Pro Controller is a thing?

@pokepal148

Comfort of having a grip like a traditional controller in case separate joy cons isn't your thing.

Because the Grip isn't sold separately for 70 bucks!

I've got a Joy-Con Charging Grip and a Pro-Controller pre-ordered just because I can't decide and I have the money right now…

am I a fool!?

In the Famitsu interview about Splatoon 2 they recommended the Pro Controller but that it'll work will all play styles and that they understand the joy cons are primary for folks.

So I feel like that alone makes me want the Pro now.

This, 70 times over!

Honestly I'd reverse the question myself. Why spend 70 dollars for what comes in the box? (Answer, apparently a Dpad is worth $70 to some folks...)

For me I will start with it in the grip and see how it goes. But if the Joycons alone separated work well, I've got no problem going two-hand freestyles. I just think I'm going to prefer having a little more to hold onto that the Grip provides.

See them there handles on the sides? That is why I want the grip. My hands are freak-hands, all gangly and requiring of more plastic to fondle.

I just found out that the Joycon Grip is different from the Joycon charging grip.

Loved it with the wiimote/nunchcuk and I'm so glad they brough back that detached concept for Switch.

Yeah, that's my answer too. But so much depends on how it actually feels to hold, so who knows?

I assume that I'll mostly use the pro controller, but when using the joy-cons, it'll probably come down to how comfortable it is. If it's not more uncomfortable for some reason, I'd probably prefer to not use the grip most of the time.

Driving to work today, I said in my head "whats a Joy Con?" I don't know why, but nothing about the Switch is sticking in my mind. I guess I'll get what I get on Day 1, and figure out afterwards if I need more stuff or not. Blech.

@J.K. Riki

Don't accept their hand-shaming! Your hands are big and beautiful! (BBH)

With a bit of planning, most people shouldn't really need a charging grip.

@Anand
I agree, though just to be safe, I bought the dock that charges 4 at once. It's the same price and still easy to get, unlike the charging grip.

@DeputyVanHalen
Yeah, I'm always tempted by those things, but I have a mistrust of third-party accessories.
02/15/17, 03:32
@Anand
I get that mistrust, but it's pretty hard to screw up a charger.
