Fun hunts, Biggs! That last battle -- for anyone who missed it;
We had been crushing everything with our Skells, but decided to take to the ground on our feet for the final mission. We dispatched everything per usual, and it was pretty good, and then some Lv37 Vireo showed up (Biggs says 3, I thought 2..), things were going alright..and then I was one-shot, or something close to it. Simultaneously, he goes down after being surrounded by all 3.
Like something out of POWER RANGERS, "WE NEED DINOSAUR POWER, NOW!!" (in my best Austin St. John), I BOOKED for the Skell, and Biggs did as well, where we were able to hold 'em off. Pretty, pretty, pretty....pretty good. |

Welp, finished it. I had 4 level 50 skells and 4 level 60 characters and... the end was almost a letdown in how easy it was. For most of the whole end sequence I barely lost any health at all. I did die once at the super cheap very end part where your skells lose their fuel but even then everyone else in my party had a lot of health and the boss was almost dead so I was sitting there watching the seconds count down thinking hey, maybe they will finish it without me. But alas, they did not.
So that ending. It uh... let me get this all straight. Elma was some kind of alien who came to Earth to save us and humans escaped on this ship but actually they were in fake bodies and their real bodies were what we were looking for the whole time but actually there were no real bodies just computer memory and DNA so humans could rebuild their bodies but actually all of that was destroyed the whole time so how the F was everyone alive no one knows but it was probably the planet itself keeping everyone alive or something.
Did I get it? How odd. Not sure what I think about it.
Also it says THE STORY NEVER REALLY ENDS and Lao's eyes open but he looks kind of evil and... was this supposed to be suggesting a possible sequel? Doubt that will happen at this point, seems the original formula was more popular so they're going back to that.
Is there any reason to keep playing beyond the main story? I'm feeling pretty done at the moment. Taking on some of those huge uber bosses I saw around throughout the course of the game could be interesting but I'd probably have to spend a lot of my time building up to them and... meh.
I have many thoughts on this game but too tired to get into them now. I'd say I liked it overall, probably even one of my favorite Wii U games at the end of the day, but it started dragging a bit in the last half for me. I actually kind of feel like the skells hurt the game, when you're on foot it's this very vast adventure where every small piece of space feels new and fresh and exciting and you really have to work to get anywhere. Then you get a skell and it's like, drive wherever you feel like, even if a way too high level enemy locks onto you you'll probably be out of their range before you die, so the whole sense of adventure and forbidden areas and such is gone. Then you get flying skell and it's like even less of an adventure, you just fly around without worrying what is below you. Cauldros, for instance, actually looks like a super complex and interestingly designed area, but I mostly just flew around it without getting much of a sense of the details so it felt less rewarding to explore it.
Ah well. Good game, but very glad I'm done. Time to move on. |
