I've seen a lot of people really down on this game since it got announced. I don't blame them, I was too! Really wasn't a fun of Sticker Star, so seeing them continue that style of gameplay was pretty disappointing.

But then I went back to play Thousand Year Door a few weeks ago, and found myself thinking... "This is fun, but I use the same strategy every battle. There are so many cool badges but there's no incentive to use them all! I would be really cool if there was, like, a system where each attack was a one-time use, and you had to improvise by playing with whatever you have at the time, and... oh crap, wait a minute."

So I'm willing to give this game a shot with a more open mind. I do think it's lacking a lot of Thousand Year Door's personality in its character designs, and I'd love to see a story that's a little more bonkers than Sticker Star's, but watching this trailer, the game looks gorgeous. It's like a polished-up 2016 version of what Paper Mario should be! I don't think it'll quite reach the heights of Thousand Year Door, but man, some of that stuff in the trailer looks really cool. I'm looking forward to it.

Oh man, I guess I`m already forgetting things from the game. Sorry about that!

I don't remember having to run away at all. I always ask the Thing guy about the Thing I need, and he always lets you know where to find it if you haven't discovered it yet.

I regularly checked with him before setting out on a new stage, so I never ran into that problem. Using the Thing at the right time, though, is a different story. I bonered a few times and used it sooner than I should, which left me for dead. Oh well, live and learn!

Maybe I'm not crazy...

Anyhoo, the biggest mistake I made (Thing-wise) was using the Thing against Lemmy before I should have. OUCH!

I thought the way to the Thing was blocked by a Shy Guy who doesn't let you pass until you've faced the boss once, but he actually disappears after you do the pre-screening, I guess?

I still found two FAQs saying you fight the boss once and then flee, before you can get the Thing, though. So it's not just me.

Maybe you need to learn how to play video games better.

This video doesn't make Roshambo better or excuse it, but it does explain it.

"Good ol' rock...nothing beats that!"

I'd just like to point out that the guys behind Alex Kidd in Miracle World must be spewing at Colour Splash.

My wife and I finished the game last night! I refused to go to sleep until it was done. LOVED the Mario Kart Luigi stuff at the end, what a great little nod/addition. Hilarious. Whole game was funny through and through and I highly recommend it before you say goodbye to your Wii Us!

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said.
Luigi bursting in with the MK8 music blaring... So good!

@ploot

And the whole "mean stare" comment was a great nod to the way it was its own little meme after release. They really had fun with the game, you can tell. :)

I can't be far away now. The Green Star must lie just ahead (Cleared the SMB3 stage last night. SO AWESOME.)

Hiding the whole sentence instead of part of it, lead me to just look at it. Now I'm spoiled. Hiding just the keyword would have clued me in! But this is my fault. Ah well. I don't know what it looks like.

@DrFinkelstein

The best thing you can do is avoid any spoiler tag if you're still playing the game, no? But I understand that would be difficult because what if what is behind the black bars is SUPER COOL and you miss out?! That would be the worst thing ever.

Speaking of spoilers, the setup of spoiler sections in the electronic manual for this game is inspired. As is the game's ability to recognize if you're having trouble with a tricky enemy and guide you to the relevant manual section.

This is how digital manuals *should* be done.

Another random thought I had- Does it strike anyone else as funny that the plot of Super Mario Sunshine had you running about the island cleaning up all the paint that someone carelessly splashed everywhere....But this game has you running around an island ....splashing paint everywhere?

@Shadowlink

Do to others as they would have you do to themselves, I suppose.

Ugh. This final boss is a pain in the ass. So many cards are being wasted.
02/18/17, 00:59
@Shadowlink

I hear that. Cheap jerk, too. If you don't block attacks perfectly, you just die. That was one of my only gripes about the game. Otherwise it was amazing!

@J.K. Riki

Yup. I finished it finally. Thought there might have been more secret stuff to unlock after but it looks kind of bland. The weird tree quest story thing just kinda petered out with no apparent payoff, I got the last Thing that was hidden in that throwback stage, and I cleaned up a couple of the Paint Stars I was missing. And now...nothing.

I completed the Thing gallery and the Battle Card gallery easily enough during the game (or right after) the Enemy one is ridiculously empty though. The card drop rates seem massively increased after the credits roll, but ...why?

Things to do:
- Piles of missing paint
- A bunch of enemy cards
- 2 x Roshambo Temples

I don't feel overly compelled to do these things unless it unlocks something cool. And as far as I know, it's just banners, galleries and soundtracks. Eh.

A fun game, better than Sticker Star, but still not a total masterpiece either.
