Nintendo Switch: Will the NS have a touchscreen? [poll]

Not having a touch screen on the NS (yes, I'm calling it the NS) seems baffling to me. And I cannot think of any reason why Nintendo would think not integrating it into their new system is a good idea. I think Nintendo is just playing coy for now and will announce multitouch functionality a bit down the line. What do you think?

I'm predicting that it will have a touchscreen and also motion in the joy-cons. These are hardly expensive technologies in 2017, and some of their best selling software on Wii U would be gimped hard without them. Super Mario Maker without a touchscreen? Splatoon without the excellent motion aiming?

i think so, for stuff like Mario Maker.

Unsure. Why is Nintendo hiding it? They didn't show it at all either, not that that's proof at this stage anyway....

Here's hoping! I love options!

I think that secures the direction for Nintendo. I'd say Yes.

@carlosrox

That commercial was very focused and emphasized the movement between indoor and outdoor play. I think they felt they didn't need to show off every feature, especially when they're not ready to show everything this year. I think they'll show off the feature when start seeing games for it. Really, for the mass market appeal, I think this was smart of Nintendo. They focused on traditional controls that people love and made the Wii such a hit. No motion controls shown either but plausible too.

I think they were distancing themselves from the Wii U marketing. A touch screen is hardly a feature these days. And there has to be gyro or Breath of the Wild won't work. The Shiekah Slate heavily relies on motion controls. I think it was outside their marketing goals for this reveal.

I agree I think they just want to focus on the one big feature of seamless TV/handheld transition to really drive home what makes the NX special and not confuse it with other devices.

If they'd have shown a bunch of swiping, netflix, gyro gaming, etc., it would have looked like an iPad or Android tablet and that would have changed (and probably lowered) people's expectations.

I hope so.

I hope so...but if it were going to have a touchscreen, I'd think we would have seen a stylus or stylus holder (holster?) on the system in the reveal. No such luck, and that design looks final. (Or, if this thing has a phone-style touchscreen without a stylus...blech, those suck for gaming). So I'm voting no and hoping to be wrong.

I also hope the JoyCon duders have gyros, but I'm not betting on it.

If Nintendo started jocking touchscreens before they were "mainstream" and then ditched them after they became the standard why by which handheld electronics are controlled, that would be a monumentally stupid decision.

So I say there's about a 25% chance. :p

Agreed totally FOR THE COMMERCIAL, but then they gave a No Comment to the touch screen question after. Why? That makes no sense, unless it isn't a touch screen. OR if it's some fancy new type of touch screen that will blow people away, but come on, battery life is already toast so that surely isn't happening.

So I voted No. I don't think it is. I think it's a bad move, but it is what it is, and I still desperately want a Switch, ha ha.

I think they'd be crazy not to include one in some form...a multi-touch touchscreen like a tablet would be huge.

@J.K. Riki

They're just focusing on what was shown for now. I don't think a touch screen will be a make or break feature. There's already quite a few people that said that there's still more console features that they haven't touched upon (lol) so we'll have to wait for the next update... which may only be next year apparently. I'm fine with that though. Happy with what we've seen!

I can't imagine they'd skip out on it, Nintendo's just being weird as usual. What I worry about is that it doesn't seem like you can use the touch screen and the TV at the same time.
10/21/16, 20:28
@DrFinkelstein
Yeah I'm with you. The masses won't give 2 shits about all the features like us. It's not a bad strategy because the next trailer can sort of surprise people with features.

So Laura Dale said MULTI TOUCH is in. If true, that's pretty awesome. I'd love to see how Nintendo would use it. Hopefully they don't completely abandon using "gimmicks" just because your average idiot refuses to try anything new when it comes to games.

In the grand scheme of things motion, touch, gyro, and IR are criminally underused.

@Mop it up
Yeah this worries me a bit too. Hopefully it still has the abilities of Wii U where you can switch to the TV, use both, etc.

I think that it will. It makes sense and the public will expect it.

Every rumor I've read says that Switch will have a 10-point touch screen, or whatever it's called.

I can't imagine Nintendo would not have a touch screen on Switch when every tablet on the planet has one.

@carlosrox

I feel like a multi-touch screen with this would be their way to fix another one of the Wii U's "mistakes".

@WrathOfSamus777
10 Point? What does that mean?

@DrFinkelstein
Yup, that too.

I have no idea if there will be a touchscreen, but as long as Nintendo, Miyamoto or any other member of Nintendo's development team, will never have access to adding in touch controls or worse yet, a second screen into the development of any future Nintendo game, them I personally don't care either way.

I mean, look how games like Starfox(garbage) Zero turned out....yea that game was well received and the majority of people just loved how Nintendo ruined that beloved franchise. Looking back at Wii U's game library, its easy to see that there really is no need for a second screen, multitouch or not, in today's gaming world. Sony and MS has sold millions of games that people love, the world over. Gamers just want a controller in their hands, a television in front of them...its a really easy formula for fun, that Nintendo has been screwing up since the mid 2000s.

Gamers never once implied that they wanted a new way to play videogames. I can play games normally, the way I have since the Atari 2600 and NES days and I have loads of great fun doing so. I don't need a stupid touch screen while playing games on my PS4 or on my son's XboxOne, PS3 & Xbox360.

The only reason Nintendo is in a distant third place, fourth position if you add in PC gaming, is their insistence that they must mess with the formula, thats been proven over and over, but for them, the only way to win is by screwing everything up, which is exactly what has occured. Their own arrogance & stubbornness has led them down a path to pure hell. They are not the only game makers in town anymore. Its well past the era when they saved the gaming industry.

All they need to do is make great games on technology that is equal with the 'other guys' tech, no fancy gimmicks needed, but they do need to kiss the asses of all the third party developers and get those guys back on board. Then, with first party titles that are second to none, add in the best third party titles equals a truly winning combination that no other system can boast. Its always been that easy.

@gamewizard65

Considering the DS and the 3DS have been the best selling consoles of their respective generations, I think it's safe to say you're dead wrong on no-one wanting a touch screen or a second screen.
