So I had some Microsoft Points to burn, and instead of downloading some highly-acclaimed, new LIVE ARCADE game, I opted for an old N64 favorite from back in the day. Why? I dunno. I guess I was feelin' the nostalgia bug this weekend or something. Whatever.

I was honestly kind of expecting to have buyer's remorse... I mean, the game was great, but was it the kind of game that really stands the test of time? Well, after having put in several hours last night (and unlocking a handful of achievements) I can safely say that, YES, the game is still good. Great, even.

Now I think I want to try out the sequel, Banjo-Tooie, a game I regret to admit that I've never played. I can't remember exactly why I didn't play it, considering I like the original so much. I think at the time, I was a poor college student, so I had to really cut back on my expenses. (I remember wanting buy, but not being able to afford, games like Excitebike 64, Ogre Battle 64, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day and others as well)

So, for those that HAVE played the sequel, is it as good? Worth downloading? It's only like, $10, I think... so either way I guess it's worth checking out, at least. Right? Or should I not even bother, and just stick with the original game and pick up something else on LIVE?

I've thought about getting the HD version. I was more interested in Tooie, since I never had the cart. But the demo reminded me of how sloppy that game is.

I don't think I've ever gotten all of the jiggies or notes, though beating the game requires nearly all of them anyway. I think I just looked up the 100% ending on YouTube instead... or intended to. I think it was just a preview for the sequel anyway, which I already owned, though it might still be interesting to watch and see how it might differ from the final version.

From what I remember it's some banter between the characters, and hints about where to unlock the stop n swap features that never were. Don't think there was anything that really connected to the actual Banjo-Tooie that we got.

That ending was a much bigger deal in the window between games . Confirmed the sequel and it addressed the niggling questions I had about why I couldn't figure out how to access that stupid door and that goddamn Ice Key. Kinda.

@r_hjort

Apparently that feature relied on actually swapping the cartridges in the N64 mid-game. There was some sort of buffer memory in the N64 hardware that gave you a 10 second window to do just that.

Unfortunately a hardware revision dropped that window to a fraction of a second, so the feature would no longer work on the newer N64 consoles.

Yeah, that's what it was. I didn't remeber the details, like how long you would have had to do the swapping, but I remember the basic idea. To be honest I don't feel like we missed out on a whole lot.

Confirmed the sequel
So did Tooie

Wasn't that more of a brief mention, though? Like, something that could be dismissed as a gag?

@r_hjort

You're right. It was a throwaway line from Gruntilda's disembodied skull/head at the very end of the game mentioning that she'd get her revenge in Banjo-Threeie.

As for the Stop n' Swop stuff, I still liked what they did with the Ice Key in Tooie, even though the Eggs in Tooie were a bit of a let-down. That said, I was really happy that the Eggs and Ice Key were still accessible in Banjo-Kazooie through the sandcastle cheats. It let you visit some areas of the game that you otherwise couldn't.

Aah yes, the head-kicking scene! Wasn't sure if there was anymore than that, but I seemed to remember that mention feeling more like a joke to me.

Yes, it was certainly a joke since "Threeie" is an absolute mess of a word.
It made me chuckle when I initially experienced it.

So I now own an Xbox One S with Rare Replay so now I find myself two-thirds of the way through since last night. Loving this game.

I've got everything up to completing Gobi's Desert and I'm at about 4 hours in.

I beat Banjo-Kazooie in just over 8 hours total (which includes the final boss-fight) but in terms of when you beat Grunty's Furnace Fun and Rescue Tooty (which is when Xbox stops saving your time) it was more like 7 hours and 25 minutes. (When I noticed ShadowLink had a time on there I was secretly competing with him for a 100% run.)

I keel you

I thought for sure I'd beat your Click Clock Wood time but man it really does take over an hour doesn't it? For me it took an hour and a half because I forgot where the last Honeycomb was.

A blast though. Erika was watching the whole time and we enjoyed making fun of Gruntilda along with Brentilda.

@DrFinkelstein

From memory I started to really slow down in those last levels, I don't know them as well as the early ones.

What was my time anyway? A shade under 10 hours if I remember correctly.
08/29/16, 00:55
@Shadowlink

It was better than that (unless again, like mine, your under 10 was with Grunty's battle cause Xbox doesn't log that).

It says your 99 jiggles and 900 notes was 08:07:21.

I did 100 jiggles, 900 notes, in 07:25:30. But again, neither of our times have the Grunty battle and I had two cheap deaths which prolonged my wrath there.

@DrFinkelstein

Wow, better than I thought. I wonder why I thought I was under 10? Maybe that was my first run? I did a second run a couple of years back.

Must fire up the 360 and have a look.

...99 Jiggies? INCOMPLETE. OH THE SHAME, THE SHAME OF IT ALL.

Wonder how that happened.

....I still have a slew of Perfect Dark records at least

@Shadowlink

It seems your missing jiggy is one in Grunty's Lair. Perhaps it's just that last one from the Witch Switch in Click Clock Wood?

Your discussion of revisiting this top-10-all-time-of-mine game makes me long to play again...
08/29/16, 21:32
@J.K. Riki

My play through came from simply trying out the Xbox One S and frankly, I couldn't put it down. This game is stellar and I was appreciating the great design all over. I saw things I never noticed. Just totally a stunning affair. It was amazing to me also how much of the game was muscle memory (from the standpoint of secrets and what to do). It's like Super Mario World for me in that effect.
