A thought occurred to me the other day while playing this game, and I think I know why Next Level Games was chosen for this project.
The game really reminds me of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. And it parallels the differences between the console games and the handheld ones.
For instance, the original Luigi's Mansion gave you this huge mansion to explore at your own pace. There were no stages. Just a non-linear exploration-driven game to find Mario. Dark Moon split up the adventure into bite-sized chunks of various stages, with the hero "returning to base" after each major objective was complete. And this time, there wasn't just ONE mansion to explore, there are several.
Likewise, the original Metroid Prime gave you this huge planet to explore at your own pace. There were no stages. Just a non-linear, exploration-driven game to find...well, honestly, Samus' objectively wasn't entirely clear to me in the first game. Was it to find Metroid Prime? She didn't even know about it until later in the game. Maybe it was just to hunt down the remaining Space Pirates and Meta-Ridley? I dunno. Whatever. But yeah. Big, non-linear adventure. Then along comes Federation Force, with the adventure split up into bite-sized chunks of various stages, with the hero (or heroes) "returning to base" after the completion of each major objective. And this time, there isn't just ONE planet to explore, there are several. (though this was done before in the Prime series, admittedly)
Anyway, I saw the similarities between these two Next Level 3DS projects and thought I'd mention it. *shrugs* |

Finally had a chance to play last night, and it's pretty fun! The controls really bummed me out at first but I found a good solution (type B, sensitivity all the way up, gyro set to "on", and vastly preferred using the full size CPP vs. the ThinkPadŽ nub, that thing just sucks). The game looks decent, the art direction is a bit sterile but honestly not as bad as I expected after seeing what they did with Blast Ball. The music so far is a bit of a let down, it's just there, which is puzzling to me because they could have just re-used music from the other Prime games all of which had stellar soundtracks, maybe it gets better?
As someone who doesn't like Metroid for multiplayer I still wish this was a standard single player adventure, but oh well, this game seems pretty cool on it's own merit. |

Playing with the default controls and no CPP is kind of like a mix between Splatoon, Star Fox Zero, and Metroid Prime. It's a nifty little setup, but fuck does my hand cramp, especially playing it with my elbows digging into my bed. You have to like rotate all around to play, if you wanna get really into it that is. Or, just be really good with simpler wrist movements, analog control, etc. Again, sort of manages to remind me of Splatoon and Star Fox Zero.
But yeah, I really like this game tons. Solid 7 or 8 out of 10 in terms of the game itself. For me, it being Metroid does enhance it. And I looooove the Samus references. So great. It's like this big build up for the return of Samus!
*SPECULATION*: And the possible story based on rumours, official talk (Tanabe saying what he'd like to see in future installments for example), and some of the ending sounds a lot like an Arkham Knight kind of story. I haven't finished AK yet (I take a long time to finish my games....I've been on this for like a year now with huge breaks in between) but I mean the core concept of a character meeting their match, someone who hates them and a certain system, someone who could rival them, and is fascinated by yet hates them. And for their mystery to be an identity. I mean I find it super cool I'm playing AK and still have no earthly idea who the Arkham Knight even is. They're like a ghost. I'd love for some of that to be played with in a Prime 4.
Apparently this Sylux character hates Samus and the Federation deeply? I'd love to find out the story there.
