Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

@VofEscaflowne
I like that idea, although I'm knee-deep in a few other games at the moment.

Oh, Mario Maker, you were once my one and onlyyyyy.

Good tips! Thanks. I dunno if I'll ever make a lengthy level, though. I'm so lazy...

But, yeah. Completion rates are always lower than I expect. I guess that I should just adjust my expectations.

This is also the first time that I hid a key item in an invisible block (and the first time that I even had access to invisible blocks, I think?). I tried to make it so that it was immediately obvious that something else was needed to progress.

Seems like most people just give up on the thwomps, though. The Patience part.

@DrFinkelstein That isn't weird, Pikmin 3 is an amazing game.

@ploot It looks to me like your levels have a good number of plays and stars...

I haven't posted a level in a while. Actually, I may have uploaded a couple and didn't post them at all, but here's my latest: a short one using a key.

Oh yeah, I forgot to post about finishing my series! I've been working on a series of levels which together are supposed to be like having my own Mario game, with things like progressive difficulty, secrets, world themes, etc. Some secrets contain powerups, making them worthwhile to seek out. It contains 37 levels in all, starting with this one, and they're all numbered. Check 'em out if you're interested.

Here's a quick rundown of the kinds of ideas you'll find in each world:

World 1: Grass Land - SMB
The first world follows in the footsteps of World 1 in SMB1, starting with a basic ground level, followed by an underground level, though this one centers around the Spiketop enemy and there is a hidden powerup to help you through the level. The third level ramps things up with a platforming treetop stage, topped off with a straightforward castle.

World 2: Grassier Land - SMB3
This one is similar in structure to World 1, except that it's styled after SMB3 instead. The first level "introduces" the Super Leaf, which will help you deal with the stacks of enemies you'll come across. The second level is an underground stage where you have to carry a POW block to open the ways forward, followed by an "athletic" level using lotsa pipes, ending with a castle level that really heats things up! There are several secrets in this world holding powerups, so be on the lookout.

World 3: Cozy Cottage - NSMB
In this world, you'll first navigate through the dangers of the front yard, gaining the help of Yoshi to deal with huge caterpillars and vicious flowers from neglected gardens. Next, you'll move on to find this abandoned house may not be so empty after all, then leave through the overgrown back yard once again enlisting the help of Yoshi. Finally, you'll jump aboard a classic scrolling airship stage.

World 4: Tricky Triathlon - SMB
This world opens with a bouncy stage containing loads of spring boards and the Weird Mushroom powerup, followed by the obligatory water level, and then moves on to a sprint alongside kicked shells. In the finale castle, you'll arm yourself from head to toe, able to plow through enemies from above and below; just protect your sides!

World 5: Icy Icicles - SMB3
The difficulty starts to warm up in this frigid world, as you'll start off slipping and sliding through enemies on tracks. And jumping. Lotsa jumping. Next, you'll have to carefully travel through a structurally weak fortress, being careful to not destroy the floor beneath you, followed by a lovely ghost house that's been ravaged by frost and flooded from melted ice. Lastly, you'll have to find your way across a frozen ocean to engage in your first showdown with Bowser!

World 6: Gimmicky Gimmicks - NSMB
Starting off, you'll have to dodge enemies as you travel along a platform on tracks. In the next level, you'll be faced with a difficult choice: If you choose to save Yoshi, you'll be in for a tough level, whereas if you ditch him, you can take an easier route. But could you really be so cruel...? After that, your memory will be tested as you play a few memory minigames, and then your skills will be put to the test in the castle level as you must wall-jump through it.

World 7: Mount Montaña - SMB
First, you must scale the mountain both inside and out, watching out for moles and others obstacles which may fall on your head! At the top, you'll find out what it's like to play a Mario level upside-down, and then in the next level, you'll have to carefully climb back down the mountain without angering the local wildlife. At the end, you'll come across a tall tower, with no way around but through. Don't forget to look for hidden powerups!

World 8: Pyroclastic Palace - SMB3
Before you can make your way into Bowser's Castle, you must first navigate the outdoor area, which happens to be full of pesky flying Munchers! Next, you have no choice but to trek through a spooky ghost house, where enemies seem to multiply at alarming rates! Finally, in the third level you'll step foot into Bowser's Castle, where you must dodge a barrage of firebars before moving on to the final level containing a hunt for key coins to open the door to Bowser's room. The final showdown is a classic clash where you must use the environment to defeat Bowser instead of taking him on directly.

World 9: Extra Bonus - NSMB
This bonus world contains some ideas I couldn't fit anywhere else. It opens with infiltrating a nasty fortress to save a Yoshi from harm, followed by a stage where you must leave the past behind and continue looking ahead, or else bad things could happen... The third level utilises the Propeller Cap powerup for a series of challenges, and then it all ends with one last shot at revenge from Bowser! Because as with any good game, the final boss always returns at least once!

Of course I decided to churn up another Airship Stage. It'll probably be my last hurrah with Mario Maker, at least for a more serious course like this

Have fun.

"Chitoge Kirisaki"...?

Just looked her up, she's got some SERIOUS zettai ryouiki going on. Nearly S-Level!
(EDIT- I have no idea how old she's supposed to be, just going off a tiny thumbnail..the size of my thumbnail.)
(EDIT2- Ugh. Whats wrong with them over there? Why is EVERYONE a kid? 15-17, apparently.. Anyway, yeah, reading stuff about her, its incredibly weird that she ended up in Super Mario Maker. Even commenters on a page devoted to her are like "WTH? I found an Amiibo version of her in Super Mario Maker??")

@Mop it up

I want to run these. Remind me! (And maybe you can find an hour or so for Star Fox 64..)

@Mr_Mustache Must... make... more... Marios!

The Star Foxes will happen in August and November, I promise!

@Mop it up

I wish we could've played together. Ah well.

And I am meaning to tackle your 'game.' I haven't played in a long time.
06/29/16, 01:13
After nine long months, I've finally done it!

...No, not that. I've earned 5,000 stars, which is enough to have the max uploads of 100! Woohoo!

...Now to actually make 100 levels to upload...
08/11/16, 01:51
@Mop it up

Congrats! That's awesome. I really want to catch up with your levels and get making again. It's been far too long since I've done either of those things.
08/12/16, 01:49
@Octorockin Thanks mate! Yeah, it's a bit of a bummer that NegWorld wasn't more active with this game, you guys made some pretty interesting levels (yourself included)!

I actually made a "thank you" level, which seems like a common thing people do so I figured I'd better show my appreciation. It's sort of like a "credits minigame" that some games have, where I wrote out the names of many of my followers in bricks, and then you shoot through the names in the fire clown car to try to get a high score. Just something simple to have as a shout-out, and in fact, your name's in there too!

I've gotten into this game again somewhat. A youtube channel I follow have weekly themes and I've been making stages for that when I have time. Been having a lot of fun with it actually, I think having a theme encourages me to make levels more than I would if I had no theme. Running out of upload slots though, only got 4 left.
08/14/16, 05:11
@Mop it up

Wow, 5000? That's awesome and congrats!

I kinda wish I was more into this game. It's still a ton of fun but it would've had to come out with like no other games releasing for a while Also too bad that they didn't release a few more free content updates in there but I'm not expecting it at this point anymore. Wonder if we'll see this game on the NX?
08/14/16, 14:44
@Pokefreak911 Oh, neat, I'll have to check out more of your stuff! And I can help a bit with that upload limit of course. Working with a theme is one of the ten tips in the manual, so I agree it's a good idea to help someone stay focused.

@VofEscaflowne Thanks mate! I didn't expect any content updates, so I'm fine with what the game got. I've gotta imagine there will be some form of Super Mario Maker on the NX, it's too popular for there to not be. Obviously I'm hoping for a sequel, but fear it will simply be an expanded version or even just a straight port.

Well, in terms of Wii U releases, there were hardly any games released for a while...

ZING!

Seriously though, this game has been like Miracle-Gro for my backlogue... but oh well...
08/14/16, 21:43
Mario Maker is massive on Youtube and people still play it constantly. Nintendo would be blind to not see that and capitlise on it. It will most definitely come out on Wii U at some point, hopefully with more features as there is still plenty they can add. I would love more items unique to each theme if they do add things, as Mario World and Mario U have plenty of things that could be added to Mario Maker.

@Mop it up
If you could help out that would be amazing :) Really enjoy making levels and hate the thought of having to take some down to upload new ones.

My nephew is kind of obsessed with this game. He's always making Kaizo levels and then demanding that I beat them. Personal satisfaction can only be gained by using some obscure Mario trick that he doesn't know about to skip parts of his levels.

@Mop it up
Congratulations! I also want to catch up with all of the NW levels, including yours. I feel like the NW standard is pretty high. I keep saying that, but I really am going to sit down with the spreadsheet open and just start poring through them one day.

One day...
08/29/16, 03:46
@Anand Thanks mate! Yeah, it's nice that NW isn't full of trolls...

My standards are pretty high I think, I put a lot of effort into my stuff. I think it's paid off too, just look at but some of the glowing comments I've received:

"this level sucks"

"bad"

"TOOO BOREING"

"this stinks"

"poooooooooooooop"

"RAGE QUIT"

"ur feking dumb"

"i can beat that you cant and i now your not talking"

"damm this level sucks" "<---That is rude dont say that" "He is right, could have been so much better"

"unmöglicham besten 0sterne von der bewertung hätte ich mir was besseres erhoft"

"I could probably make it further, but I haven't really been enjoying this one so far…"

Can't wait for this game to launch on 3DS so I can finally join in on the conversation! I wonder what kind of levels I'll create....maybe something unique that no one has thought of before. Like, an auto-run stage that will finish itself without you touching the controller!
