Hype is over, someone make a Game thread!

Done! I'll spiffy thus one up a but when I get back from out of state. Here for some sudden family business.

However, my copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X is arriving tomorrow and I am stoked! The reviews have been generally positive. I guess the game lacks slightly in areas but they can be overlooked for the sheer density and fun this game has. Looking forward to diving into it next week. Hopefully when I return sunday.

@Mop it up I believe if you're trying to build TP, if you hold R and hit Right on the Dpad, you can instruct your party to "Build Tension."

Basically I've been doing every battle the same way, and hopefully it doesn't screw me over. I assigned all my back attack moves next to each other on the hot bar, and all my side moves. I stick to one weapon at a time basically to power moves up (as the green ring fills up) and try to launch them off in succession. I'm running a dual wielder.

@PogueSquadron

I dance around based on what my group is calling out, and that seems to go well. One move flows to another pretty smoothly. I dig.

I'm definitely stuck on chapter 10, no way am I getting past this without some serious leveling up (unless I just "rent" a bunch of higher level characters again but that feels like cheating.)

No sweat, just do side quests right? Except I have a long list of side quests and it seems like they're either the random collect a bunch of stuff that you have no idea where to find it ones, or ones that I get there and the enemies are way above my level. All the affinity missions I can see right now are above my level too. There are PROBABLY side quests that I could be doing right now but the game floods you with so much you can't do that it is tough to figure out what you can do without running all over the place checking up on stuff that you couldn't do before but maybe are ready to do now but there is no way to know except go check again.

I feel like much more often than earlier in the game too now I'll be fighting an enemy and then another one jumps into the fight... and another, and another, and next thing you know it's like a whole swarm of enemies pounding me.

Ug. I really do like this game but it has some things that are keeping it from being up there with the truly amazing RPGs (for instance, the first Xenoblade.) I'd be like 500% more on-board with this game if it had a better quest tracking system that made it more clear what you could handle at your current level so I didn't have to spend a bunch of time figuring out what I can even focus every time I turn the game on. I feel like a game is failing hard if it gives you a long list of quests but you're still sitting around trying to figure out what, if anything, you can take on.

And to be honest, like some 70-odd hours into the game and I still don't really understand the battle system. Sometimes the shrinking circle you have to press a button to get some more health back comes a lot, and sometimes it just... doesn't come at all for long stretches, and then my characters start dying. And I have no idea what makes it come and if I have any control over that.

Also, is there any way to call your SKELL back to you? I've already had a few times where I excited my SKELL, fell of a ledge or something, and couldn't get back up to my SKELL since using a SKELL was the only way to get up there to begin with. So then what?

@Zero I agree with your criticisms, the game feels pretty sloppy at times so it was tough for me to stick with it.

For the Skell, I believe that if you fast travel, the Skell follows you. So if you can't get to it, just fast travel to some location and it should then be nearby.

If I remember rightly, some of the button prompts in battle may be random, but some are activated through the Soul Voices (or they at least restore HP). If you see one or more of your arte icons flashing, it means it's a response to one of your party member's Soul Voices, so you should use the arte if you can. You should also be sure to set up your own character's Soul Voices to things that you can more easily activate with your class, and make sure the voices are asking for the types of artes that your current party can use.

@Zero

There's an option in the Menu (I think under party) to "Return to Skell". So not the same as bringing it to you, but at least you can get it back to you without fast travelling somewhere else. The quest system really isn't very good, but the battle system is explained in great detail in the manual. This is probably one of the few games I've played where reading the manual actually made a significant difference.

What's a "manual"?

I'm getting a little better at bailing from my Skell if I'm afraid to use it. Still, I'm really broke now. I'm on my way to the 4th continent, and I think I might need to salvage my Skell. Is there any way to buy more insurance, or does the insurance just come with the Skell initially? I read that later you can get a Skell with 10 insurance.

Maybe I'll finish this for Backlaugust. Ha.

@PogueSquadron

The top division reward is a salvage ticket which is basically one unit of insurance
08/03/16, 17:24
I'm 100 hours in and stuck on chapter 12. Ugh. The boss is so difficult.
08/03/16, 17:31
@Cubed777 Isn't that option basically the same as fast travel? I feel like there's a reason I never bothered to use it... or perhaps I just never needed it...

@PogueSquadron There is no way to buy more insurance, the only way aside from paying the fee is to do what mrbiggsly suggested and use a salvage ticket. I would typically join the most popular division at the time just to get them.

@Mop it up Yes Return to Skell is exactly like Fast Traveling except you may not have a travel point near your Skell. I like to use it to make enemies respawn when I'm looking for something without having to re-travel.

I started getting into this again lately, finally beat mission 10.

A little confused about affinity missions... STILL. So I'll often see a screen that looks something like this:

Except at the bottom it will say something like "Affinity requirements not met." I had assumed the image in the bottom right was the requirement... but I don't think it is? I think it is telling you your current affinity? But then how do you know what the required affinity is?!

@Zero

The bottom right IS the requirement, yes. Your current affinity with your folks are on your giant, uh, "mind map" looking thing. Remember mind maps in school? Of course your do.

You raise your affinity (obviously) my questing together. As you can see, there are only 5 hearts for the entire game, so its a time consuming process. You can't just go out and knock down half a heart. The way I was doing them (and I was doing EVERYTHING I could before advancing, which is probably why games take FOREVER for me to finish..like Xenoblade!), was to get 2-3 lowish affinity people, and go out together. So you, plus 3 skunks, and they'll all go up together. I may be wrong, but I think CHAINING with them expedites the process. Almost like you're buds out there. Like how I'm directly replying to this post of yours, know what I mean? BUDS.
01/04/17, 08:40
But I just got "Affinity requirements not met." on two different affinity missions and I checked the affinity map thingy both times and it was the same as the screen showed (which is why I thought maybe that's what the screen means is your current affinity.) Does it say "Affinity requirements not met." if ANY requirement isn't met? That's probably it, but what a weird way to word it, very confusing.
01/04/17, 09:23
@Zero

Are there multiple people going on the quest with affinities you need to satisfy? Also, does it LOOK like you filled up the heart but you really didn't? You can be like 98% full and it won't go. Just keep working with them, it'll go up. I don't think it gives you that Affinity message if your Lv is too low or whatever. I need to get back in here soon. Last time I played though, I was lost as heck. What a terrible night to have a curse.
01/04/17, 10:05
It's hard to tell when a heart is full... there needs to be the heart, then a white outline, then a pink halo around the white outline if I remember correctly
01/05/17, 00:37
Hmm, heart was probably *almost* full then. Because in both cases I came back like an hour later after just random grinding and such and was able to do the missions.
01/05/17, 00:47
Me around the 65 game hour mark: This is a pretty good game, but it's not quite as good as Xenoblade. I'll probably just try to do as few sidequests as I can and stick to the main missions and finish this game off as soon as possible.

Me nearing the 100 game hour mark: WHY DO I KEEP TAKING ON EVERY SINGLE SIDEQUEST THAT I SEE THEY NEVER ENDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

Seriously I've barely progressed the main story in the last 30 hours of play or so. And while some of the sidequests are fun, a lot of them are just mindless fetch quests, or stuff that could have been fun but I'm way too high of a level for to be any challenge, etc.

I managed to get a lot done fast because I was on break and Shirley was gone so my life was empty and boring and I filled it with video games... but now I'm back to work so who knows what pace I'll be able to keep up at. I'd like to finish this game before the Switch comes out, but who knows.

GAH.

@Zero Yup, I pretty much felt the same way.

You kind of have to do side stuff at some point, because the last few chapters have big difficulty spikes and will be really tough if you didn't grind somehow. Not just for levels, but also obtaining some of the equipment, Skells, and Skell equipment available. So, handling those side quests should end up working out for you when you go to tackle the remaining story missions.
