So a new mini-NES is on the way from Nintendo, and it includes 30 games. Read on...

Nintendo of America said:
If you see a Nintendo Entertainment System on store shelves this holiday shopping season, you haven’t entered a time machine. (Unless everyone around you is wearing acid-washed jeans and neon leg warmers. If that’s the case, you may have unknowingly walked through a rift in the space-time continuum.) The most likely scenario is you are setting eyes on the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition, launching in stores on Nov. 11 at a suggested retail price of $59.99. That’s right: The NES is back! But this isn’t the same NES that you fondly remember. This new nostalgia-fueled system is a near-identical, mini replica of Nintendo’s original home console and plugs directly into your high-definition TV using an included HDMI cable. The console comes complete with 30 NES games built in, including beloved classics like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, PAC-MAN, and Kirby’s Adventure.

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

The system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one NES Classic Controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller. But you really just want to know the full list of 30 games, right? Feast your eyes on the fantastic collection of NES classics included with each and every system:

Balloon Fight™

BUBBLE BOBBLE

Castlevania™

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™

Donkey Kong™

Donkey Kong Jr. ™

DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE

Dr. Mario™

Excitebike™

FINAL FANTASY®

Galaga™

GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®

GRADIUS™

Ice Climber™

Kid Icarus™

Kirby’s Adventure™

Mario Bros. ™

MEGA MAN® 2

Metroid™

NINJA GAIDEN

PAC-MAN™

Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream

StarTropics™

SUPER C™

Super Mario Bros.™

Super Mario Bros. ™ 2

Super Mario Bros. ™ 3

TECMO BOWL

The Legend of Zelda™

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™

There’s a little something for everyone: a nice mix of timeless favorites, cult classics and maybe even some games that you never got around to playing. Each is sure to bring back memories and produce plenty of new ones. You can even enjoy playing several of these games with two players by attaching a second NES Classic Controller, which will be sold separately at a suggested retail price of $9.99. A Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also be used (each sold separately).

When connected to a Wii Remote controller, the NES Classic Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii system. Playing these retro games using a retro controller makes the experience that much more authentic. And if you ever need to step away from the NES Classic Edition in the middle of a tough level (or take a break to call one of Nintendo’s helpful Game Counselors*), don’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress. Each game has multiple suspend points, so you can start where you left off at a later time, no passwords needed.

What’s old is new again with the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. Relive past glories. Finish off that boss you never beat. Save the galaxy and rescue the princess!

*Please only call if you have indeed entered a time machine. The Game Counselor program no longer exists in 2016.
So what do y'all think? Looks pretty cool to me...

So...screw you, Virtual Console?

Also, will it play my original NES carts, too? Or only the pre-loaded ROMs on the system itself?

This thing is smaller than a NES cart, so...

Obviously I'm getting at least one of these things. I think the cost here reignites the silliness of VC pricing, but... whatever. It's too cute to resist.

@GameDadGrant

It's a mini NES so your carts wouldn't even fit in it. They're probably bigger than the mini NES

Quite a surprise!

This is...pretty cool. The selection of games is solid (nice to see that there're some 3rd-party classics and it's not just, like, Golf and Clu Clu Land filling in the gaps) and the price seems reasonable enough. Two concerns, though:

1) Hooks up to HDMI. Does this mean a delay? That's usually a big deal for these older, twitch-based games.

2) It almost certainly doesn't run NES carts, which is kind of a dealbreaker. I've got about 30 or 40 NES carts myself and even my top-loading NES is starting to fritz out on me, so this functionality would've been a godsend.

That said, I'm still kinda tempted. Lemme whittle down the game selection to ones I don't already own on the NES or VC...

-Bubble Bobble
-Castlevania II
-Final Fantasy
-Galaga
-Ghosts n' Goblins
-Gradius
-Pac-Man
-Tecmo Bowl

Hm...tough to say. A cart-reading add-on or something would really sweeten the deal.

@Kal-El814, @VofEscaflowne

Ah, thanks fellas. Yeah, I saw the photo of the hand holding the thing, but I wasn't sure if like...just the *pins* section of the NES cart would be able to slide in? And the rest of the cart basically just stuck out from the thing. But...maybe not. Too small. Kind of a bummer.

That said...it's only $60, is incredibly tiny, and man. DAT NOSTALGIA. Not a bad selection of games, either! Kinda bummed they included Simon's Quest but NOT the vastly superior Dracula's Curse. Also odd to see Adventure of Link but not even a sniff of Dragon Quest....er, Warrrior. And WHY FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD can Konami NOT re-release the original NES Contra? The last time that was made available for a "modern" system was as an unlockable in Contra 4. I have no idea why it's not on VC...or even this new compilation system. What gives?

Buuuuuut....like I said. Not a bad selection of games. I mean, TECMO BOWL? Awesome. Final Fantasy? Sweet. The entire Super Mario Bros. NES "trilogy" (of sorts)? FANTASTIC. And I mean, dude. Bubble Bobble. One of the most endlessly replayable multiplayer games of all time. That's just awesome.

Agreed - it'd be a no-brainer if it also took original NES carts. That said? I'll probably hate myself as I do it, but I'll very likely buy this thing. I clearly have no self-control when it comes to buying video games.

Aw, adorable! Will buy! Can't wait for the mini SNES, N64, and GCN!!!! They'll look so cute sitting on a shelf next to each other!

@GameDadGrant

Yeah, I immediately noticed the lack of Dragon Quest/Warrior. As a huge fan of the series, that omission is kind of a bummer. Cool that we're getting the first FF though.

Because Konami is run by two amoebas and a rat with half a brain?

That's really cool. A very nice price for people who don't already own those games.

I've got the vast majority of those on either the VC or as a cart to play on my Retron 5, so I don't think the price is worth it for me. I can think of some nieces and nephews this would be perfect for though.

An SD card slot and a way to download VC games to it from a PC or the Wii U would be a huge improvement.

Yeah I can't not buy this, I don't care how frivolous it is. It's too cool.

Hey now that I think about it, I swear I mentioned an idea like this not too long ago!

It sounds tempting - let me do the same as Bun here and leave the games I don't have on VC/3dsVC:

Castlevania™
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
Donkey Kong Jr.
FINAL FANTASY®
Galaga™
GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
GRADIUS™
Kid Icarus
NINJA GAIDEN
PAC-MAN™
Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream
SUPER C™
TECMO BOWL
******
Now lets take that same list and only leave the games I've never played before or would like to play again:
Castlevania
FINAL FANTASY®
GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
GRADIUS™
NINJA GAIDEN

no. - better leave this one - Cool idea though. It really does need an option to play original carts - that would be huge.
And no Super Spike V'ball = fail

I notice all the third-party games in the list are all-caps. Some sort of licensing thing?

Also, are all of these only games that are already on the VC? That would explain the lack of Contra and Dragon Warrior.

@TriforceBun

I don't think so...was Bubble Bobble on the Virtual Console on the Wii or 3DS? It isn't on Wii U...

I'll have to buy this but why couldn't they do two things!...

1. Connects to the eShop to purchase, download, and play other titles.
2. Come with wireless retro controllers

This is still too damn cute to pass up.

I'd be down for the controller but the last thing my TV needs is another HDMI device. Plus, I'd rather have my games in one place.

Still, the controller sounds pretty sweet.

Guys you have to remember this thing is $60, if they start adding wifi and SD cards and Bluetooth etc it's gonna cost more like $100 to $150 which puts it in the same range as a Wii or PS3 or something. The whole point is that it's uber cheap! They already make an expensive, full-features console it's called the Wii U!

While we're on the subject, is there a legal (i.e. non-dubious) version of one of those all-in-one systems? I'd love to be able to play my NES, SNES, and N64 carts on a single system for space purposes, but most (all?) of what I see out there is just unlicensed stuff that I don't wanna support. Any solution?

Cool! We noticed the same thing!

*high five*

Wait....should we be high five-ing this? This doesn't seem like a "high-five" scenario. (hey! this thing is missing the same thing we want! Score!)

Ha! You may be on to something there...!

Absolutely! It'd be an insta-buy at that point!

@ludist210

Bubble Bobble is NOT on 3DS. It *IS* on Wii Virtual Console, though!

@deathly_hallows

Meh. I think $60 is not cheap and, yes, I don't think games are cheap. This is an emulator that they already have and VC games that they already have. I understand this may have been a licensing challenge but after that adding on a blue tooth component to the controller wouldnt be that crazy. Now my other request for more downloadable games was a bit crazy.
