Anyone else pick this sucker up? I love the series and Shirley also does and it's rare that she is into a game so I figured might as well grab it up right away. Sure enough she heard me playing and was like IS THAT RHYTHM HEAVEN?! and wanted to play.

I've gone through about 8? mini-games so far. I think only 3? were ones I hadn't played before, but it's still fun. Wish the balance of new to old was higher but what can you do.

I'm interested in trying out the original Japanese songs as well...

@ploot Is that an answer to "is there a quick way to unlock the cafe games?" or are you just saying I should do it anyway?!

@Zero
Sorry, that was an answer to the unlocking question.
It awards you orbs, although it'll still take a while.

Oh yeah, I beat this like a week ago and forgot to post about it!

...I know the series was birthed on handheld systems, but I've gotta say, I feel like it gets a lot out of being played on the big screen. This is really apparent in some of the Wii ports in Megamix, like Working Dough. With Fever, the team really took advantage of having a whole TV screen to up the presentation value, but it feels a bit less fantastical being back on a tiny 3DS screen. There are definitely some catchy songs in here, but nothing quite filled me with the joy I got from Fever.

I found the story, and a lot of the bonus features, to be pretty extraneous. WHAT'S THE POINT OF THE GOAT-FEEDING GAME!? I do appreciate the replay value, but in a game like Rhythm Heaven where mastering it just comes down to doing the same thing over and over, I don't have much desire to actually complete all the content. Give me a game with more stripped-down presentation, no gatekeepers, no dialogue, and no six worlds of tutorial games. I appreciate them trying something different, but it didn't quite work--they didn't improve on the heart and soul of Rhythm Heaven, like Fever did. They just added stuff. It reminds me of Runner2 trying to be better than the original by adding new characters and difficulty modes. That's not why people loved the first game!

Fever is like a trip to Disneyland that you can go on with all your friends, whereas Megamix is like watching Mickey Mouse cartoons alone on your laptop. I still had a good time with it, but it doesn't really hold a candle to Fever, and I'm not gonna go back to it. I might be totally misattributing why this one didn't click with me--it might actually be because of a lack of original songs, or maybe I'm just Rhythm Heaven-ed out, or maybe it's a combination of reasons--but yeah, I'll stick with Fever, as fun as Megamix was.

I got gifted this! Been playing it a lot in the last few days.

The first couple hours had some great moments (I loved the martian game in particular), but it felt a little padded because of how brief the intro games were. Felt like just when they started to get into a rhythm, they ended, and they didn't have the great little "twists" that this series is known for as you go through the song (i.e. the lights going out in Built to Scale, the storm and storytelling in Fever's Samurai game, etc). And NOA's dialogue is occasionally getting a bit too quirky and/or modern for my tastes.

That said, I do like how it kinda came full circle with the Tower sequences, having the characters return with some fuller versions of their original songs. It still kinda makes the first sections feel a bit superfluous--I would've preferred if no songs repeated and we just had new content. In fact, the main thing holding this game back against Fever is the feeling of it being a little "light" on new content.

On the plus side, it's all very fun and there seems to be more content overall than ever before. The Challenge Train is a neat idea and I like the general store/currency/unlockable system. All of the new minigames have been enjoyable and the Gatekeeper challenges were a pretty fun change of pace. As the first two games in this series are very nostalgic to me (RH was the game I played when visiting Japan in '09, RHF I played a lot of while bedridden in '12), it's kind of exciting seeing one of my favorites pop up again.

Okay, so I'm normally good at these, but Clap Trap is KILLING MEEEE!

It's not really the difficulty that's the problem, it's the fact that you have to pay for every attempt, and even Easy (which takes 50 (!!!!) coins) is tough for me.

Playing this particular game puts me on edge because of the high cost involved in playing it. Is there any way around this or am I forced to farm coins for eternity to take small attempts at this game over and over?

@TriforceBun

Clap Trap is nerve-wracking! Not sure if there's any way around it. The gates are kinda goofy, I feel a game like this benefits from giving you a few different challenges to be tackling at any given time.

I wouldn't even mind the difficulty if I could just retry for free. An entry cost would be fine for unlimited plays, but for every play it feels like I'm throwing my precious coins down the toilet...
