I've never played a Persona or SMT game, and I've only ever played one Fire Emblem game (too scarce or expensive too soon after release!). So, when I saw the initial trailers for this game, I was perhaps even more confused than most people. However, I was a little intrigued. I loved that it had a bright, colorful world and a generally happy vibe. I liked that the "dark" elements seemed "dark" in the way that Kingdom Hearts handles evil. Still, it was very difficult to get a sense for what the game was about and how it played.

Yesterday I watched the Treehouse Live coverage of the game and I was blown away!! It looks so fun! I love the creativity. I love how different it is but also familiar if you have been a fan of anime or just Japanese pop culture in general. I love that there is a central theme surrounding "performa," the life energy that fuels artistic performances like singing, playing music, dancing and acting. So cool!

I love how the world looks complex but simple to navigate and understand. I love how the art style is outlandishly cute and colorful but doesn't feel the need to lean on chibi/SD styles to do it.

For a little while, Kingdom Hearts was my favorite game; this is giving me a similar vibe in all the best ways. After yesterday's treehouse demo, this game rose to my top game of E3. Other games will likely be better made and .... make more sense. =P But, in terms of something that is new (at least to me) and still looks like a deep, legitimate effort? I'm very excited! The pessimist in me feels like now that I'm so interested they are going to cancel the localization. Because frankly, I can't believe a game whose central theme is something so fun and non-threatening like becoming a JPOP idol or an actor is coming to the west. Add in the stylish battle segments and cool mystical transformations and the ability to increase affinity between characters (that's in FE too, right?) and I find it super, super enticing!

... how alone am I in my excitement for this simultaneously wacky yet grounded game?

I've done it a couple times and there hasn't been a problem.

Well unless I luck out this weekend, I'll just have to wait anyway. I checked Walmart here and they don't have it out. Two other stores didn't carry it either but I didn't expect them to have it. Walmart is really just hit or miss with Nintendo releases on launch day since they never believe anything should be released on a Friday.

I just downloaded this today. (YES, I BUY WII U GAMES ON OCCASION! DON'T FREAK OUT.)

Haven't tried it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

My copy came in today and I've been playing for a few hours. Kind of nice to play a turn based RPG again. Haven't done that a lot lately.

I checked out Best Buy tonight and it was a no-show.
I'm in the same boat as you it seems.

My best buy didn't have it out either. I checked the GameStop just to see if they had the special edition and nope. I was able to order the SE from their website, though, so I'll get it soonish. I don't mind the wait.

It's a holiday over here so stores are closed anyway.

But this being Quebec, I expect my chances of stumbling on a copy anywhere are lower than ploot's and VofE's.

I'm a couple hours into it and I'm really enjoying it so far.

I like how the battle system isn't massively complex but has good wrinkles to mix things up and speed up battles. Also while it shares the strength/weakness system of Persona it doesn't seem nearly as brutal as those games can be.

Buy a copy and return it later? I'm tempted to do that.

I did this, and my entire order can be returned/refunded, shipping included.

Probably too late for this, but yeah. I was off, sorry. (Just talk to the people you pre-ordered from.. Or did you go online?)

So, not holding Gui's feet to the fire (or Gui's guy), but how do you feel it stacks up against Xenoblade, if a comparison can be made? I actually waited a couple times for them to explain stuff in-game, and they didn't, so that worried me a little bit. I'm still figuring out battle completely (3 and a half hours in), and I haven't had a chance to upgrade any armor yet. I guess the system for weapons is cool, but it worries me a little bit how small the pool is? This has to expand somehow, doesn't it? And its reminiscent of the way that Tales of Symphonia allowed for upgrades (with materials); always a fan of that.

As for the actual flow of Battle, took me right back to Arc Rise Fantasia again, a battle system which I've been very high on since first playing that many years ago. I know it got panned because of voice acting, and actually stopped some people from getting it, so I gotta wonder how many people were exposed to that wonderful layout. I see we've got SP points here, which seem to work like AP points, though I haven't been able to use more than 1 at a time, and that was just in my special DLC 'spheres. But yeah, the Chain/Session is a thing that was definitely around before this game. I liked it then, I liked it now, but its not new.

I've only been in that first area and the Bloom place so far; are you guys way ahead? And I'm liking it so far, but my pants have not been blown off.

I don't even know why the stores here don't have it. Walmart definitely should but they don't have it in their systems at all. I don't even know when my delivery will get here.

The SP options will expand later. You buy armor upgrades, or what passes for them at least, at the jewelry shop in town. As for the weapon pool, I'm getting the idea that it expands by chapters since I have all but one of them unlocked and I'm still in chapter 1.

It's tough to compare it to Xenoblade though since they're very different games. I have a feeling that I'll end up preferring this to Xenoblade, but that's only because I tend to prefer smaller more-focused games to ones that are just gigantic. That's not to say I don't like Xenoblade though. I'm just happy that there's a game on a Nintendo platform that might as well be called Persona, since I'm a big fan of that series.

@VofEscaflowne

I wonder if this is going to become one of those impossible to find games, despite everyone knowing about it. Hmm.

@DeputyVanHalen

Yeah, haven't even been to town yet. I just met Ms. Maiki or whatever her name is. Did you get the DLC?
06/26/16, 03:25
Are you guys trying to get the physical version for some particular reason? Because it's on the eShop and easily accessible there.
06/26/16, 05:08
@GameDadGrant

Well yeah But it's not easily accessible when the HDD doesn't have room.
06/26/16, 05:19
So glad to hear the game is getting good reviews. Would love to play it sometime.
06/26/16, 07:26
@GameDadGrant
There was a deal on Amazon.ca that gave 20% off preorders during E3. The digital copy is pricier.
06/26/16, 07:34
@VofEscaflowne

Holy crap, you already filled up an external hard drive?? Thats nuts!

@ploot

Are you expecting the special edition, or just the game itself?

I gotta say, I was expecting a BIG package as was with Xenoblade's SE, but this one was so small (box-wise) I thought they were ripping me off. "...Thats it?"

Its a grower, not a show-er.
06/26/16, 11:31
@Mr_Mustache

I mean the Wii U's space. I don't have an external and probably don't really intend to at this point.

@ploot

Yeah, forgot about that 20% off too. Though I got mine at Best Buy back when it wasn't up for pre-order at Amazon yet. They shipped through Purolator... first time I've had a package go through them. Hope they're not slow!
06/26/16, 14:28
@VofEscaflowne

Ah, didn't realize you didn't have an external hard drive!

@ploot

Gotcha. Can't blame anyone for saving some money!
