Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Nice one lol.

Yeah, thanks. This game's been in my head lately, thinking if I've lost the plot or just need to adapt and/or hunker down and learn more techniques. I guess you learn more from losses then wins.

Finally had a pretty good bout of playing. Getting back into the groove again. I found some players online pretty easily today which was awesome, and had several rounds with and without Bayonetta's. All rounds at least very challenging.

What was amazing was I ran into that Bayo asshole again who said "GodUSuck". His name's LUIGY. I ran into him again, and he wasn't using Bayonetta. He still did really good with Ryu but I GOT the fuck! So ha, I knew it. If he didn't use Bayo I would win. I've been learning more intriciacies of the game and Samus and it's pretty awesome. I really struggle doing that quick drop down from a jump thing. I've definitely gotten better and can use it, but I can't do it like those savants do. My brain isn't wired for that kinda thing. I make due with other tools in my arsenal.
So I saved my revenge against his Ryu. Sweet round.

Man it's so frustrating when I do a great round and do a comeback, or do way more damage, and still lose cuz you get caught in some something or other shit. And then when they win like that and drop after one match?!? OMG THAT PISSES ME OFF!! At least give me a fucking rematch ya shit! I always give people rematches! I always wanna keep going, win or lose!

I saved a few losses too. I'll share my heartbreak/annoyance. You will see why I earned those. They were WINS!

Speak of the devil! Just played a For Glory jerk, taunting after every KO and cycling through "SCRUB" and "SMD" tags.

Didn't have any trouble finding new opponents, though they were maybe a tad laggier than usual.

I told ya. Imagine dealing with them all the time. And since PC gaming in 1998 and on! People who play online games are jerks!! They're arrogant and they showboat!

I'll also say I noticed the bolded.

Here's a really successful round. Been a while since I did this good. I guess I've finally improved a bit. All those losses and frustrating sessions are beginning to pay off!

....and my revenge against the Bayonetta dude who thought he was untouchable. It was so awesome running into him and instantly selecting READY before he could get out of it (he was purposefully avoiding me, leaving when he'd see me join). Was hoping I'd catch him without his Bayonetta. And catch him I did.

Oh and I didn't give him the rematch he was very quickly ready for. I'm sure he went a runnin' to his Bayonetta. He refused rematches with me so it served him damn right. That was a sweet victory.

@carlosrox

I don't take the time to watch people's matches too often but I did on this post and I just wanted to say, 'Well done!'. Clear skill in there, which is old news, but you played great.

So I did something incredibly stupid. In my infinite wisdom I decoded to feed Megabyte. Here's how that went.

Any challengers?

Explanation: Megabyte is running a set I got from a site called Amiibo Dojo that involves a skill called Improved Trade Off that causes him to start at 60% but makes it so his attack, speed, and defense slowly increase the longer he manages to stay alive. He also has a skill called lifetaker that gives him a fifty percent chance to regain health whenever he lands an attack (equivalent to half the Damage being dealt by that attack.) And he has an ability that gives each attack he does a 20% chance to deal three times as much damage as it usually would.

Basically, Megabyte becomes more powerful the longer he stays on the field. His attacks have a 50% chance of healing him and a 20% chance of being a critical hit that does 3x as much damage.

Amiibo in this game can be more interesting then I thought.

After Megabyte's wonderful showcase of overpowered ridiculousness I decided to retrain my Bowser Amiibo by following a guide on Amiibo Dojo. I actually opted to have Bowser use the custom special "Fire Shot" because I consider it to be one of the best projectiles in the game and a great tool for Bowser to use at a range.

I also opted to feed Bowser before starting his training. That critical hit skill made a return along with a skill called Explosive Shield that makes it so that when Bowser puts up his shield at just the right moment it generates an explosion that causes damage to nearby opponents. He also has a skill called Improved Escapeability that lets him easily get out of grabs.

As you can imagine my match against him went absolutely wonderfully.

An important thing to note is that because Bowser is very similar to my main man Charizard I was able to personally train him up to level 50 by mirror matching. While leveling up Amiibo learn, to a large extent, by example. The reason that SHELL-FIRE uses that fireball move so frequently is because while mirror matching him I made a point to make sure to use that move frequently because, honestly that move is really freaking annoying.

But of course you may be wondering how SHELL-FIRE fares against Megabyte and well...

TLDR: Hey Carlos, I found you a new challenger.

@DrFinkelstein
Thanks, yeah it feels good to get out of that pit of misery I was in. The game was no fun, unable to find matches and when I did it was with jerks and/or it lagged! Was feeling down about the game for a moment!

@pokepal148
I'd love to fight your Amiibo! How do I do that?

---------

So here's an example of a douchebag I played against when the game was entirely unable to find opponents, it would lag, or people would play cheap/lame. He was being a dickhead so I called him out on it and then he came to the round like this.

At least he got meteored for it. Fucking annoying.

I think Megaman is super fun to fight with. I'd like to learn him some more. Annoying taunting after a weakshit KO? Lame. Ryu's kick has like a billion chances to hit you. Not a KO I'd be proud of. So I had several rounds with this same guy after he wanted to play taunt games with me.

First rematch. I didn't want him pulling any annoying shit on me so I had to go to Samus.

So then he tries to go for Rosalina (I roll my eyes any time anyone runs to a character thinking they're gonna win with that potential crutch to give Samus like Fox, Olimar, Rosalina, Falco, etc).... Some rinse and repeat action here too. Love getting them out before the 3 minute replay limit is reached!

How does his FIRST combo on me almost kill me? I was very confused by that. He almost got me too! This was our last round.
God Midna's Lament is beautiful.

This guy earned his rematch.

And it was a good one.

Great competitive round! I don't know why people need to do those short hops though. I've already debunked them. I can't even do them and still manage to destroy people who can. So clearly, being able to do that shit doesn't mean much. Not winning you any matches.

Finished this round right at the 3 minute cutoff! Very nice meteor if I may say so myself.

@carlosrox amiibo can't be used online which is kinda annoying.
04/06/16, 02:55
So it's an impossibility? Why tease me? Now I wanna play your Amiibo!
04/06/16, 07:14
Yeah I was actually pretty interested in the Amiibo stuff until it was confirmed to be offline only. That's a huge shame.
04/06/16, 17:47
So I had this thing that could record my PC for God knows how long and I just set it up tonight. It was also excruciatingly easy. Like, 'clicking 3 buttons on something that was sitting on my taskbar for years' easy.

So to celebrate, I decided to do a little commentary....thingy (?) for one of my Smash matches. I think I might do more actually, I find it fun! I think my voice is drowned out a bit and sometimes I speak too fast.

I'm ISSUING a commentary.

Nothing that will guarantee victory, but I at least find it really helpful to have visual comparisons between DI options when getting combo'd.
04/12/16, 04:10

Watching complex projectile/trap characters used well makes me feel dumb and old. In a good way!

I still think she's a great addition to the game, but she's definitely the most cheesy character, now that most of the other cheese has been patched out. I'd be surprised and disappointed if she didn't get patched in the next one. Last week's patch increased the Smash DI multiplier on Metaknight's up-air so that it's easier for the player getting combo'd to escape before getting cheesed off the top. Doing the same thing to Bayo's up-B would be a very effective way to give the defending player an escape with a little control stick wiggling.
The new patch has been datamined. They did what I wanted, and so much more. From early reports and videos, Bayonetta got nerfed HARD. Further, she's apparently the only character who received any changes. So this patch is, essentially, The Bayonetta Patch!

-- Down-tilt doesn't reach as far, has a bit more endlag
-- Forward-air combo does less damage on the first two hits and has less knockback on the third
-- Down-air has less knockback
-- Up-B has more Smash DI (should be MUCH easier to wiggle out of), smaller hitboxes, and other changes I'm not sure how to interpret yet
-- Midair Side-B has more knockback and Smash DI (harder to combo AND easier to escape), downward version does less damage, has less reach, and no longer combos into itself (which would then previously lead into death combos even at low %)

On the one hand, it's a little sad that a character who was so game-accurate got altered enough that the combos in her original reveal video won't even work anymore. It's kind of like if they took away Ryu's cancels. Something that differentiated the character from the rest of the cast has been heavily toned down.

On the other hand, something had to be done about Bayo's cheesier combos, and it has. I just wonder if maybe they went a bit too far. I guess we'll have to see how the meta turns out. The changes to Diddy Kong, Zero Suit Samus, Metaknight, Sheik, and other top-tier characters have made them less cheesy and far more fun to watch in the hands of pros. So yeah, I've got faith in these Bayo changes.

Thank fuck.

I saw Tbun playing For Glory today! So I went into For Glory and crossed my fingers to get matched with him, but alas. Wish we had a messaging system!

Had fun otherwise though, played a really great Shulk, a solid Mewtwo, and won one of those online Tournament things. The Nintendo network is going down for maintenance tonight, so I'm guess that's when The Bayonetta Patch will go live.
05/20/16, 03:16
Played some today. Know what the worst thing about this game is? The people who change their names in For Glory to taunt you, especially if they do it after you're already in the practice lobby and so you can't reply. And then they leave. UGH. One nice thing the 3DS has above the Wii U version.

@nate38

Sorry Nate! I was actually doing 2v2 with my buddy who stopped by to give me my birthday present (Star Fox Zero!). We were having kind of a rough day on Smash though. Is it just me, or has everyone gotten a lot better? I'm a bit rusty since I haven't played in a while. This is one of those evergreen titles that'll always be fun to go back to though, like Splatoon.

@TriforceBun
Welcome to my world.
05/20/16, 04:38
@TriforceBun There's no name-switching in the online Tournaments, which mostly cuts down on the potential for unpleasantness at least. I never really checked those out until recently, but they're kinda fun, even if it takes a bit longer to get to each match than For Glory. And the skill level is surprisingly variable: I've been stomped in a few Tournaments, but I won a tight one yesterday and played through one tournament today where nobody was especially challenging. The skill level online has definitely gone up on average though, probably not a lot of inexperienced players left online.

But yeah, there are still For Glory jerks out there now and then. One guy I beat a few times actually went as far as to leave a snarky troll comment on one of my old Miiverse posts. Like, really? You're that sore about losing a few games?
05/20/16, 04:46
Hahaha, trying my hand at some simple editing stuff for fun. This is so cool! I love editing, and this is nothing!

This music fits perfectly! And it's from Bloodsport, a Martial Arts movie!

ps. I fucking love Bloodsport and its godly soundtrack.
