Are there any franchises you think Nintendo has made TOO many games in lately? [roundtable]

There is a lot of talk about the NX and Nintendo's plans to rework their dev plan in some ways, make sure the droughts of the Wii U (and later 3DS I suppose) don't happen with the NX. It got me thinking, we're always talking about how Nintendo hasn't done enough, but are there franchises where you think wow, that's actually MORE than we needed? (Especially in the context of not getting enough of others?)

I think Mario Party would often make this list for some of us in the past, but nowadays they don't really make a whole lot of Mario Party games.

Despite loving them, I think we have probably gotten more Mario RPG games than we needed in recent years. Sure it is two different franchises, but they are kind of similar, and now they're crossing-over. It's already a bit weird that there are two different Mario RPG franchises as is, but did we really need three different Mario RPG games on the 3DS?!

I can also say that despite loving Pushmo, I didn't expect or necessarily even need four games in the 'Mo series in such a short amount of time. It's great that each one tried new stuff (though in World the new stuff was mostly in a side mode), but it still felt like a bit more than needed. And again, three on the 3DS felt like overkill a bit.

Don't get me wrong, not complaining about too many games here. Just thinking maybe in some cases I'd rather have seen the resources put into something else.

What about you?

Animal Crossing. Not so much the main game, but all the spinoff stuff. Happy Home, Amiibo Festival, the huge amount of cards and amiibo for it...

Pokemon. I'm just tired of it. It doesn't grow, the battles are uninteresting, and The Pokemon Company is wholly unlikable.

Fire Emblem. We got two games on the 3DS that are technically four games, plus a mobile game coming out, plus over-representation in Smash Bros. I like FE but there really should've been an Advance Wars comeback somewhere this gen.

Seconding your Mario RPG series. I think Nintendo has really lost its way with Paper Mario, and they've pushed out too many Mario & Luigi games. We'd be good with one of each per gen, I think.

I was thinking of adding Fire Emblem as well. Mostly because I'm an Advance Wars fan who is saddened that the balance between the two we had before has now shifted exclusively to Fire Emblem. But this whole new 3DS game that is really two but also really three or something? when we already had a 3DS game thing seems like a bit much, and now whatever is happening on mobile as well.

Fire Emblem, and they're ALL on the wrong system.

Mario sports games
Mario Party
Animal Crossing
Fire Emblem
Zelda (spin-offs and remakes)
Smash Bros.
Pokemon (spin-offs)

I wish they'd stop making Fire Emblem games so the pain can finally end. At least there was only one Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.

And I fell off the wagon with the Mario and Luigi series after the high mark that was Bowser's Inside Story. I tried Dream Team but gave it up because it felt like they were just going through the motions. I don't think they're making too much Paper Mario, they're just making too much bad Paper Mario. In a way it's the same sort of phoned in bore that Dream Team was, just taken to its furthest end point where they didn't even try to be creative.

All things Kirby.

Mario RPG immediately comes to mind. I'd be surprised if Color Splash was anything but a whiff, critically and commercially.

I don't think Fire Emblem is played out, per se, but it's curious that we got Awakening, three versions of Fates, and a ton of DLC while Advance Wars and potentially other franchises remain buried. Like @Hero_Of_Hyrule the franchise's apparent new priorities bug me, but I accept that I'm probably in the minority.

It pains me to say it, but I agree with @cooliocuneo regarding Kirby. Kirby's Return to Dream Land isn't even five years old, and we already have two marginal iterations on that formula in Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot. In that time, we've also had two (admittedly good) spinoffs in Mass Attack for DS and Rainbow Curse on Wii U, and a nice anniversary compilation in Kirby's Dream Collection. Plus the minigames included in Triple Deluxe were spun off into individual eShop titles, and I'm guessing the same will happen for Planet Robobot.

I'll also put Yoshi in there. In just over a year we had two largely similar takes on Yoshi's Island. While I personally don't care for the Yoshi series at all, I can see why people were excited to get a new entry for the first time since Yoshi's Island DS. But I think most would still agree that two of them in such a short period was too many.

The New Super Mario series. Granted, I think it's been a few years since Luigi U, right? Still, they released several of those games in a really short time. And with Super Mario Maker out there, I'm not sure I'll really need another 2D Mario anytime soon. Another thing that hurts its case is that Nintendo's other 2D platformers (DKC:TF, YWW) have been superior games. I say keep Mario in 3D for the foreseeable future.

Nope, and I don't understand the idea. "Too many platformers"? You mean one 3D one that's one of the best games in the entire series, a 2D one that's arguably the best in the series, and another 2D one that plays completely differently and is also a contender for series' best? Oh and 2 more Mario games that are also series' best?

Nope, I don't understand the complaint. If I did, one of these games might not exist.

Under representation in certain genres? Sure. That makes more sense. But that's not Wooly World's fault.

Ah shit I thought this was about genres and not specific series. I've heard the genre complaint before though so my point still stands.

All of these, and for the same reasons TBun stated.
I am still a fan of Pokemon simply due to my addictive "collect 'em all" nature, but the games are very, very stale. I also agree that TPC comes across as an unlikable company.

I will add Kirby to my list too though. Heck, the new Kirby puzzle panel on the 3DS made me cry rivers of sad, sad tears. MORE STREET PASSING for ANOTHER Kirby puzzle? BLAAAHHHH!
I LOVED Triple Deluxe, but the last few "standard" Kirby titles have been very samey and way too close together.

I think Kirby is the most overused Nintendo character. There are so many Kirby games that they all just run together to me.
04/28/16, 15:25
I might feel the same about Kirby if I really paid attention to Kirby games. Whenever they get announced I try to find out if they are "alt" Kirby games or not. If so, I may get interested. If not they mostly fly right off my radar.
04/28/16, 16:06
@Zero I think that's the issue why I think they make too many of them. I don't really like the franchise and every time one is announced I'm upset at it taking the place of something else I could be getting. For example, DQ7 was announced as a Summer 2016 game and then when Kirby was announced and revealed for June DQ lost its summer window. I'm just gonna go ahead and blame Kirby for that one.

I can't say I can get behind this kind of thinking as it feels incredibly self-centered, though part of that may just be because of how much I like the Mario franchise for example so I don't feel like there are too many of those games. Instead of wanting to take away games that people like, I would rather focus on series or franchises that don't get enough entries. Realistically, underrepresented series getting more games would likely mean that other series would have to get less games, but that doesn't mean it's what I want to happen.

As such, here are some series in which I'd like to see more games:
Advance Wars
Battalion Wars
Endless Ocean
ExciteBike / Truck / Bots
Metroid
The Legend of Zelda
StarTropics revival
anything 3D platformer

Probably some others I'm forgetting.

Boy, lots of Kirby on here, huh?

I mean, I get it--I think I'd admit that Robobot seems like one Kirby more than necessary. But outside of that, I think it's fine.
04/28/16, 23:11
@Mop it up I tried to stick to franchises I like but just felt like they're getting a LOT of games, as opposed to just dumping on stuff I don't like or care about.
04/28/16, 23:12
@Zero Yeah, that's true, you (and some others) did seem more fair with it than I've seen before elsewhere, but it still isn't a concept I like to take part in.
04/28/16, 23:17
I'd also go with Kirby, although I'd go beyond just that franchise and say that 2d platformers in general have made up a much too high percentage of their lineup in recent years .

So much Kirby hate.

I think it to be one of the most consistently fun and quality ridden of all Nintendo franchises. I can only think of one bad one, Rainbow Curse. It's also one of the few franchises that's keeping 2D platforming alive - and hits both handheld and home consoles. If anything, I want more Kirby!

I can't think of a true franchise I want less of save for maybe New Super Mario Bros. - thankfully there's been a lull. I am getting tried of hearing about Fire Emblem, even though there aren't that many games right after another. I guess it's from the SSB FE roster overkill.

Or maybe it's the cross-promotional or whatever nonsense happening like crazy across all Nintendo franchises. So, yeah, I suppose if there's anything that's too much or too many, that's it. Mario clothes and looks in this game, or Metroid looks and clothes in that game. I get it, but I don't like it. I think it keeps the core experiences from feeling totally unique and pure. Or something like that.

But seriously, all you Kirby haters inhale.
