The latest Mega Man collection is available NOW on Nintendo 3DS! It's $30 at retail that comes with a bunch of goodies, and a cool $15 for the digital version on the eShop. So while we are still waiting on Mighty No. 9, we can get our classic Blue Bomber game on in a way that is not available on the standard VC releases. Are you in?

$15's a pretty good price, but I'm having trouble justifying getting this when I already have the Anniversary Collection with MM7 and 8. Would've loved if this was MM1-10...
02/24/16, 18:07
If I buy this it's basically for the challenge mode... is it worth it?
02/24/16, 18:21
@TriforceBun

This is on 3DS, Anniversary Collection is not. Plus this new collection has the Challenge Mode, which is pretty great stuff. Tons of other art assets, notes from the creators...and hey! You can configure the controls to how you like! So yes, you can have the NES "A" and "B" buttons mapped to the 3DS's "B" and "Y" buttons. Which I seem to recall is something you have complained about in the past.

@mrbiggsly

The challenges are pretty fun, from what I've experienced. I haven't done them all, but what's there is good stuff. There are even more 3DS-exclusive challenges that can be unlocked if you have the Mega Man Amiibo!

The game also has a full museum, stuffed with promotional art, concept art, scans of the manuals (both ENG and JPN) and other history bits. Plus a music player with all the games' music. Also included are save states, configurable controls, and even some stereoscopic 3D. (popping out the game field from the "boarders" on the left and right)

I'll probably pick it up cheap on Steam someday. I don't think it's gone on sale at all since it launched last summer, though. Wonder if Capcom's going to try and stand pat on that $15 price point.

@nate38

Wait, can you use the Amiibo on the Steam version...?!? How did they get THAT to work?
02/24/16, 19:03
@GameDadGrant

Haha, fair enough.
02/24/16, 19:05
This seems like a good package for people who don't already have all the games, but that ain't me.

If they did something with the Game Boy Mega Man games, I'd be on board.
02/24/16, 20:49
@Mop it up

Do you already have the JPN versions of these games, too? (Rockman on Famicom) Because this legacy collection includes both the NES versions and the Famicom ones. Plus the museum. Plus the Challenge Mode. Plus all the extras you get with the music, and included stickers, CD and themes in the retail version.

Which is fantastic if you're a big fan of Mega Man. I guess it's up to the individual if they are a big enough fan of the Blue Bomber to say whether all this content is worth the price of admission.

Though I'll also say that the Challenge Mode could easily be worth the price of the eShop version's admission. It's nearly a game in and of itself.

I've been playing games for decades and I've literally never played a Mega Man game. I'm planning on buying the digital version, but I'm gonna wait until Nintendo gets their new rewards program going so I can get coins for it.
02/25/16, 21:04
@GameDadGrant Personally, I don't think one's fandom is determined by an interest in non-gaming trinkets, nor a willingness to buy games one already owns. That kind of talk always sounds like segregation to me.

I've never really been interested in things like concept art or music CDs, and I can always look up that stuff on the Internet if I ever want it. I'm also not interested in Home Menu themes.

What are the differences between the US and Japanese versions of the games? I wasn't aware of anything major, just a visual tweak or something here and there, as well as the easy mode in Mega Man 2.

The Challenge mode does sound interesting, but I dunno if that alone is worth the price of admission. Plus, it looks like some of it requires the amiibo, which is dumb and adds to the cost.

@Mop it up

Hm. I assumed that one's fandom would determine whether or not a gaming-themed non-gaming trinket would be worth a purchase. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. But I can say that if say, a Crash Bandicoot collection came out, and it came with stickers or a soundtrack or whatever...that wouldn't entice me to buy. I'm not a fan of Crash, so any freebies associated with him wouldn't be worth it to me.

But maybe that's just me. I dunno.

I'll let you know what, if any, differences there are between Mega Man and Rockman. I think there is some difficulty difference (beyond the first sequel) and maybe even some differences in controls/physics? Maybe I'm making stuff up, I can't remember. I'll let you know what I find when I play through them!

The Challenge Mode is awesome, but does not require an Amiibo. There are 3DS-specific ones that unlock when you use the Amiibo, though. Do you not already own the Mega Man Amiibo?
02/26/16, 02:10
@GameDadGrant To be clear with my point, I think that each person expresses their fandom in their own way. Some fans like to have those added bonuses like concept art and books and whatever else, but, it doesn't necessarily make them bigger fans than people who choose to not get that stuff and just play the games a lot. I'm not suggesting this kind of stuff isn't intended for fans, I just don't like to separate fandom into who is a bigger fan.

I actually didn't know that this collection had both the US and Japanese versions of the games, so yeah, I'd be curious to hear if there are any significant differences when you get to them.

I know the challenge mode itself does not require the amiibo, but according to the OP there are some challenges locked behind it, whatever that means. I don't have either of the Mega Man amiibos as I don't collect stuff like amiibo, I'm interested only in games themselves. Besides, I'd have to get one of those amiibo reader adapter thingies also, since the regular 3DS has no native way to scan an amiibo.

@Mop it up

On the fandom point: I agree! I was just saying that one's affinity to a product or whatever would determine whether or not it would be worth putting money down for. For some, it totally is; for others not so much.

I put some time into the JPN versions, and I didn't notice too many differences. A surprisingly large amount of text is already in English! There are some unique graphical differences (the title screen for the 6th game was immediately obvious) but otherwise mostly the same.

Final thought: congratulations on avoiding the temptation to buy Amiibo. Don't start! I've found that once I started, it's difficult to stop!
02/26/16, 15:36
Sounds like a nice package but I have all these games in various places, and truthfully the only Mega Man games I'd go back to at this point is Powered Up, Powered Up is perfection, everything else pales in comparison.
02/27/16, 05:54
@deathly_hallows

Dude, Powered Up is so good.

I'm so totally bummed we never got more. And it's not like Capcom is going to be doing anything with it anytime soon either. Gah, what a waste.

Maverick Hunter Mega Man X was fantastic, too. Did those games ever make it to the PSN? I still own the UMDs (I'll never let them go!) but those should totally be available to more people. If nothing else, at least make 'em playable on Vita. Lord knows that system needs SOMETHING for people to play...!
02/27/16, 21:35
I purchased the 3ds digital copy and I love it, can't beat $15 for 6 games. I'm excited to finally have these Mega Man games on the go! In celebration of it's release, I also purchased the Mega Man Collection, off of ebay for the GameCube.

I might also get Mega Man Zero Collection for the DS, since Amazon has it for 40% at $17.99

I'm still looking for an inexpensive copy of MM X collection for the GC, I might have to just get the PS version instead.
02/27/16, 22:04
@GameDadGrant
Nope they are UMD only, which annoys me to no end since I don't have a PSP anymore.

But on the subject of Vita there are tons of games to play! (just very few exclusives)
02/27/16, 22:35
So, how's the 3D on this game?
