Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Yeah WHAT? Thanks for reminding me about that one. I've heard Zelda is apparently terrible, yet I find her pretty dang good. And she can kick my ass if she applies herself. Her neutral special (Nayru's Love) is very effective. Gotta be the best reflect in the game. It's very spammable and can be used offensively or defensively. Her air attacks are ridiculously deadly, and all her tilts are good. How is she possibly considered bad? The only move of hers I don't get is the Teleport. I haven't the foggiest how to recover well with it and even worse, attack with it! That move is also very spammable and I have received many a death from that move.

@Zero
I'm pretty sure it's a whole other ball game, but vids I see in Tourneys don't really impress me. I've fought guys that are ridiculous, and they do way crazier shit than I've seen from "the world's best".
My mind isn't really blown by the pros too much. But we can assume they're just making themselves not look that impressive because of the level they're fighting at? Like, it's all relative?
Still, I've seen some of the recent tourney fights and I think to myself I could beat a bunch of these guys.

Plus these guys DO play professionally, like, as a living, and they study and practice and shit while I do none of this stuff. So naturally they'd be better. Plus, they've also more than likely been really good since Melee.

I guess I was never too shabby at Smash, but that's compared to my friends who clearly don't "game" as seriously as I do. But only with Smash 4 have I really learned how to play Smash. Amazingly, somehow, I don't think I was even fully aware of all the tilts and air attacks UNTIL Smash 4! Either that or I hardly ever used them.

@carlosrox Look for a tournament in your region and go find out!
02/06/16, 01:02
@carlosrox My understanding is that pro competitions look so limited because there are only so many viable things a pro can do without getting their butt handed to them, so everyone is just trying to do the same few things over and over and over until something hits.

I honestly don't have much interest in learning any game at that level. I feel like once you're studying actual techniques instead of just going with what feels good, it stops being as fun. Although fun is relative so who knows, the pros might be having more fun than anyone.

...but they're always playing on flat courses with no items, which doesn't look very fun at all.

@Zero
Amen. I am very much against that sort of play. It's why I roll my eyes at players who beat me with tried and true tactics. Mix it up, grow a pair. That's a real champ to me, someone who is versatile and can overcome adversity. Some of my favorite matches have been ones where I make insane comebacks as opposed to getting perfect on a guy. It may sound silly but I also find studying techniques and all that shit a kind of crutch. It's a...Catch 22 (???) or a paradox??? I learned Smash by playing on my own. I didn't go to Smash Boards and YouTube vids and look up all the cheap little moves and tactics and regurgitate shit that I see work. I can't stand people flocking to whatever is easy or whatever is guaranteed to work. Some guy destroys me with Shiek? Meh, nice S Tier character win bro. Try and beat me with "garbage tier" Samus some time.

Every game will have a player base that abuses either exploits or cheap tactics as a perceived advantage. I think the real players with talent are ones who don't resort to such cheap chicanery (sp? Bonus points Simpsons reference!).

I remember Medal Of Honor Allied Assault on PC introduced late into the game this idiotic lean that you can spam as much as you want, at any time. So you could lean as you ran, jumped, looked around corners, etc. And people would spam it nonstop and it would look like this stupid little dance. And you could literally dodge bullets that way. Also, (like CS) one could snipe around a corner, but to a point where they could see everything and you could see nothing. Basically before you could even know something is in the room you'd be dead. I just always found that incredibly lame. And I loved to hand those people their ASSES without ANY leaning or pixel hiding.

The Samurai Code: don't play like a wuss/puss.

And you bring up a good point. Making a fucking science out of games just isn't fun to me. Why would you wanna play doing the same shit over and over again? Is winning by rinsing and repeating that fun? Is winning so necessary you'll just auto pilot your damn game? Where does it end? Why not Tool Assist For Glory matches while you're at it? I cannot roll my eyes any harder when I see people across the WORLD all play Shiek or Diddy or whoever, the EXACT same way. It's embarrassing. Thank God the way I play Samus isn't something you'll find in 50,000 different YouTube vids.

@carlosrox
Being able to dodge bullets in real time actually sounds kind of badass...

While I'll never be great at Smash (and that is an insanely frustrating fact), I enjoy the heck out of playing it and play it often I do. However, so many times I find myself in a match with someone that simple plays in styles similar to what carlosrox has referenced. I like to play fair, and fun. I don't spam attacks, and my ultimate goal isn't to win. Yes, I want to win, but my raison d'etre is to have fun.

So many a game I start off and the player just starts spamming a projectile move over and over and over again. I'd run in to attack, and they'd run over to the other side and start firing off faraway moves again. Sometimes I'll just stand there to see what they'll do, and sure enough, they just keep firing away. Thus causing me frustration and jumping to my death in order to end the game so I can move on to one of substance.

Then you have those that jump constantly like an erratic rabies infected squirrel, trying to lure you into a position to which they can execute a series of moves they've perfected. And, apparently, the only series of moves they've perfected, as it's all they can do to win.

I think one of the worst things to happen in this version of Smash is the ease of executing combos. Smash, to me, isn't about combos. Those should be left to DOA and the like. While I'm not the best at using combos I'll admit, I know my fair share, but I actually refuse to do more than one or two at a time. It's just not good sportspersonship, I don't think.

I also get annoyed when someone plays the same character over and over. I get that they like the character, but when coupled with tired spammy moves? No thanks. I get you know how to win at Smash with Little Mac by doing the same charging lunge punch over and over. Good for you.

And then there's those that stay on one side because the only way they know how to win easily is to lure someone to the edge to do a cookie cutter series of moves to then execute a meteor smash. These are kind of fun, as once I sat down my controller, walked away for a bit, came back and they were crouching over and over. I'm guessing as a tool to say, hey I'm friendly let's not fight. So, I get back into the game, walk over, and sure enough they fire up their cheap little move set. Followed by a first round taunt, of course. So tacky.

When I play as Fox, I don't fire as soon as I start the game. Nor as Falco, or Pit. When I'm Samus or Link I don't simply fire projectile after projectile. Even if that's easier. As Ness or Lucas, I try not to spam PK Fire. Sure, sometimes one falls into that pattern depending on the match, but I'm constantly conscious of not following into a cheap way of playing.

Get in there and get dirty. That's how I play. I may die repeatedly, and I may not. But, I have fun in the process using different moves, with different characters. It's just more fun that way.

@NoName
Can I get an Amen? Great post.

I am guilty of overusing the character I'm best at though.
02/06/16, 20:44
The sour grapes on this page make me sad. But people can enjoy the game however they want. And complaining is pretty damn enjoyable, let's be honest.
02/06/16, 21:21
@nate38
I detected no lies in NoName's post.
02/07/16, 03:31
Whenever I play with a group of people I start with my mains but eventually I'm switching to all kinds of characters, including ones I rarely use and don't even really know their moves. Just more fun that way.
02/07/16, 03:37
I always choose Random when playing online. I just want to have fun.

Thoughts on the new DLC characters:

Bayonetta is already one of my favourite characters in the game. I love how fluid she can be in the air and her ability to generate combos on the fly. I'm sure once people learn how to DI properly and anticipate some moves, she will have a tougher time, but right now it just feels so satisfying to rack up 50%+ on a combo with such grace. She has sooo many options. And witch time may be one of the best counters in the game, barring Corrin's - although, each has their own advantages. Her smash attacks are very slow, basically only to be used in Witch time and to catch people with a stomp spike just off the ledge. I also love how much care they put into her design, everything from the way she crouches to the way she walks and her taunts are just amazing. Her move set really mirrors her games too.

Corrin seems to be really popular in the online community (espeically female Corrin, therefore I will now refer to this character as a she). I'd say over half of the people in For Glory are playing as Corrin currently. Probably because she has an easier learning curve than Bayonetta, and is by my observation just as strong. She has a great mix-up game with her side B and feels like a very unique character to play as. Her counter is REALLY strong, almost too strong IMO. There's a video out there of her KOing a Bowser fully charged f-smash at 0% with her counter. I've had more than a few combos which I thought were "safe" be interrupted by a Corrin counter, so it definitely comes out quick too. I could see her being one of the stronger Fire Emblem chars in the game, but then Sakurai went and buffed every other FE char in the latest patch. You can tell he has a soft spot for the series! Honestly Corrin's inclusion got me a bit more hyped for FE Fates. I hate to admit it, but the marketing worked.

Overall, this has been the best character DLC update so far. Yeah, even better than the Roy/Lucas/Ryu DLC, if only because that one included two veterans, and overall I don't jive with Ryu's playstyle but I'm having a ton of fun with Bayonetta and Corrin.

@anon_mastermind Yeah I've seen way more Corrin online than Bayonetta. Corrin's such an easy adjustment from Lucina/Marth, and with some serious KO power in all situations, it's no wonder she's popular (I tend to go with the female version myself). I've had so many early KOs against eager Bayonettas and Zero Suit Samuses chasing high to kill me off the top, just counter and they're done at almost any percent!

But man, is it just me, or is Bayonetta's down-air kick insanely good? It's a meteor smash through the whole duration, and it covers so much vertical distance, yet Bayonetta can still recover from off-stage afterwards just fine! And even on-stage, it KOs at like 80% if you hit someone with it as they get up from the ledge!

I get the feeling Sakurai and the team have a better grasp on what makes characters tournament-viable now. Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta are all so strong. Even better, they're not just strong because of throw combos or kill throws, it's all-around moveset utility.
02/09/16, 20:40
Cloud's stage is better then cloud as a character in the game.

Corrin is poised to become a prominent part of my rotation.

02/09/16, 20:57
@nate38
it's a very strong move. I did recently learn that you could cancel it and recover, makes it even better. BUT, I think you can tech into the stage because the move kind of hits you into the ground and then launches you upwards. This happened against a Cloud online yesterday, my d-air didn't send him flying and he had appear to tech it.
02/09/16, 20:58
@pokepal148
lol at Olimar trying to fight you without Pikmin.
02/09/16, 21:03
@anon_mastermind Ah yeah, true. But if you do it close to the ground, the window between the two hits would make teching pretty tough though, especially online with the latency.
02/09/16, 21:07
Charizard also has become quite a respectable character, and they finally fixed his up smash.

Like before it was basically Charizard from brawl and he had a lot of problems because you didn't have squirtle and ivysaur to cover for you.

Thanks to a steady stream of mostly minor buffs (most notably how ridiculously quick his dash attack is) he has become quite a formidable threat in his own right.

@nate38

Its probably like her Big Stomp Thing in Bayonetta 2. Its supposed to be good!

@TriforceBun

They gotta have a reason for you to buy the NX version of the Wii U game.

EDIT- @pokepal148

That was pretty awesome, this game looks super fun.
