I'm sort of bedridden-ish at the moment and playing way more 3DS than usual so I finally started this up. Reading this thread it sounds like a bit of a mixed bag, so we'll see if it clicks.

Anything hugely important to know?

@Zero Breath attacks count as physical damage.

I'd recommend having someone learn the Thief skills, at least until you get the steal ability. Some nice stuff you can get with it!

Constantly getting poisoned in one of the first areas of the game. NO DON'T DO THIS RPG MAKERS WHY.

Is there any way to quick warp out of the dungeon you are in? All of my characters are poisoned and it autosaves on every floor so my last save is in the middle of the dungeon and everyone is poisoned. How the F do I get out of here without having to fight my way back out?! If not this is seriously bad design, you could get so screwed with saves. I think I'll just turn autosave off.

Now all of my characters are blind. I don't even know what works against blindness, but I know I'm stuck in the middle of a dungeon with a whole team of blind characters and it's impossible to win even a simple battle this way. The only solution I can see (no pun intended) is try to escape every battle and run out of the dungeon AGAIN and go see if there is something to buy in the town that can heal blindness before going back in.

Is this game serious? It's like actively trying to get me to quit before I've really even started. Don't throw a bunch of status ailments at players early on that's just garbage design, especially in a game with auto-save so you can't even die to get rid of them.

@Zero

How about:
-Buy stuff that counters blindness, ie: eyedrops
-Buy stuff that counters poison, ie: antidote

While you're at it, buy some stuff that counters sleep, petrify, slow, doom, death, etc.
They don't sell them for fun, MAN.

(NO, I don't have this game, but thats RPG Survival 101. What are ya doin'??)

@Zero Oh yeah, guess I should have suggested to turn off auto save. Forgot about that one.

There is no warp I don't think, but you can just turn off the enemy encounters and leave the place. Don't forget about those options!

@Mr_Mustache I've played like a million RPGs and I've never played one so devastating with the status effects so early on. Or later on, really. In most games it's usually just something you run into occasionally, but in this game in this dungeon it was like every other enemy either poisoned your whole party or made your whole party blind or put them to sleep or...

@Mop it up Ah I didn't know I could turn off enemy encounters. Apparently there is some spell to leave dungeons you can get later, as well as some item I can probably? get now. But I did finish that dungeon so it's moot now.

Apparently there were also spells I could have bought in the first town to "cure" poison and uh... blindness maybe? but who would have known I'd have needed them so early?!

@Zero

Poison is a backbreaker in Dragon Warrior 1, even. Gotta grab that 10G Antidote first crack ya get.

Duuuude, what are you doing? You've done the equivalent of going to work without pants. Or a shirt.

Maybe that's the problem. If certain urban legends about the causes of blindness are to be believed.

Put your pants back on Zero, geeze.

In a pinch, you could change one of your characters to a white mage, use poisona, blindna, or esuna on everyone, and switch back to the previous class. It's pretty versatile like that

Geez there are a lot of pervy dudes in this game. At least early on. Hopefully it's not a trend throughout the whole game. It's already getting tiring.

People often claim that no one cares about how men are represented in games, only women, but I find excessive stereotypes annoying regardless of gender. Men think about things besides women's bodies sometimes you know.

/EDIT Damn, now this pervy old "sage" is trying to get the women he sexually harassed the night before to cook breakfast for him and his logic basically comes down to WOMEN = COOK. I think we may have found the most sexist dude in a game yet.

I'd say that every time you enter a town, you'll want to make sure there are spells that you can buy.

And don't be afraid to abuse the disabling of enemy encounters. The game would be way, way more tedious than it already is without it.
02/08/16, 22:12
@PogueSquadron when I played and beat it, I disabled enemy encounters when I was interested in story progression and then put them on max when I would grind. I went back and forth, its how I enjoyed that game.
02/09/16, 00:45
You won't end up underleveled if you disable fights a lot? They are kind of tedious. Basic fights take longer than they do in most RPGs.
02/09/16, 01:05
@Zero Ha ha, yeah, the game can be pretty bad with that stuff, but the sage is the worst of it for sure.

@Zero That's what the fast-forward button is for.
02/09/16, 03:17
There's a fast forward button?!

Sheesh, this game has a lot of stuff it didn't tell me about.
02/09/16, 03:18
@Zero RTFM. :P

I thought the game did mention things like the difficulty options and encounter rates, but it might not mention the speed options. I think it's done with the D-pad if I remember rightly. During any time when actions are being performed (i.e. when not choosing stuff from the menus), use left and right on the D-pad to change speeds. You can increase it to 2x or 4x speed, as well as slow it down to 1/2 and 1/4. There are a couple things which will not be affected by a speed change, however.
02/09/16, 03:22
Well I'm at the part where everything starts repeating... over and over and over. Seriously questioning if I want to even bother moving forward. It's been a pretty decent but not remarkable RPG so far and the upcoming stuff sounds annoying as heck.

Also I accidentally read a spoiler above but it was something I had already suspected. I can't even put a finger on WHY I suspected it, but I did. Was waiting for it to happen.

@Mop it up Any tips for which jobs to focus on? Spell fencers seem like the best bang for the buck but I don't know what else I should care about besides having a few people who can heal well.
