Final Fantasy Explorers Discussion (Nintendo 3DS) [game]

Final Fantasy Explorers on the 3DS
8.5/10 from 3 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Final Fantasy Explorers on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Taking Final Fantasy elements and throwing them into a game that is heavily influenced by Monster Hunter, you get Final Fantasy Explorers. Mixing in online co-op play and a ton of objectives and challenging Eidolon battles, it's bound to be an addicting title to play together with friends.

I just got this today and basically made it a blind purchase. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan so I was always curious and Monster Hunter also has its place in my gaming tastes. Seems like a great game to add to the 3DS library so far but it would be fun to set up some online matches with people here! Anyone else picking this up? The game is officially out tomorrow (January 26th) so post here if you do!

@Guillaume

I kind of had a feeling that this wasn't the kind of game that would hold your attention. It's very grind-y and isn't much story or humor involved.

I think if I didn't enjoy "the grind" so much, I'd probably ditch it, too. There's not much else to it...at least not yet. I've only taken down three of the eidolons or whatever so far. Maybe things will ramp up later on? That's kind of what I'm counting on.

Different towns and areas might be nice. But so far it's not scratching any kind of Final Fantasy itch for me.

Game continues to be more of the same but with more challenging and interesting Eidolon battles. Plus the online really makes it shine as you can play as a support character and really feel like you're supporting your team. Even playing as a Black Mage, I'll find myself equipping White Magic when I know what sort of battle I'm going into next and knowing I'll be of help to my allies. That's what scratches my Final Fantasy itch anyway. Plus it's great to play different jobs too.

@Scrawnton

I think I've played every FFCC rather extensively. I used to play one of them online with folks now and then back in its day. I think that if you really enjoyed those games you would really enjoy FFE. Now, objectively, FFE is not nearly as high quality as Fire Emblem Fates. But, depending on your tastes, I can say personally that I am LOVING FFE and would definitely choose it over Fates.

You've got some good options in this community to play with online, so, you should be able to find a crew when you want it. Like VofEscaflwne implied, if you can derive enough entertainment from the sense of online co-operation with others, and the general Final Fantasy flavor, it's a slam dunk. If you're looking for impressive visuals and dynamic action, not so much.

A lot of people say that there is no story in this game. That's, mostly true, but to me I often consider story in terms of how cohesively a world hangs together from a fictional standpoint. In other words, how much is it "a game" in which the narrative elements are irrelevant, compared to a game that, while playing, automatically and fluidly writes your own story in your head. To me, this game is square(enix)ly the latter. As someone who cares about story more than any other aspect of a game, I feel that if you go out of your way to read the Quest discriptions and chat with NPCs, and just think about how you and your comrades are questing, there actually is way, way more sense of narrative than, say, Monster Hunter or Phantasy Star 0.

Speaking of which, I would compare this game much more to Phantasy Star 0 or the DS Chrystal Chronicles than any Monster Hunter game. A lot of people draw the MH comparison because the big boss fights take a few pages from the MH book. But, the game mechanics during even those battles are so much more like PS0 and so little like MH (way less frustrating!!).

@NinSage

Also, FFE is much more pick up n play friendly compared to Monster Hunter, where those quests could take over 20-30 minutes. I do enjoy that. Completing quests goes much faster!

And I do promise to play again with you, Joe! I'm looking at maybe Friday night!

@TheOldManFromZelda

Absolutely. I've actually been planning my "top __ differences between FFE and MH" for the next podcast episode now that we're recording again. Should be a fun listen.

I'm gonna be playing tonight during NT chat but I'll pencil you in for Friday!

Public Service Announcement:

If you go to your canned messages in offline mode you can fully customize them and even use them online!!

@NinSage

It's still pretty ridiculous that you just can't write while online. Monster Hunter 4 let us do it...

@VofEscaflowne

Little kid's voice: "aww, c'mon, dad! Monster Hunter 4 let us do it!"

Only kidding

But yea, it would have been nice to have that option. I'm just really glad we can edit the text at all! Now if only we could name our monsters the way we can name our custom abilities =)

@NinSage

Haha, well it was more of pointing out that it's not like there's some sort of restriction on Nintendo's end.

@NinSage

I edited some text today. Unfortunately, you cannot make your message as long as the originals (you know, those whole sentences/phrases). Which is lame!!

This boss battle theme though (Spoiler? Can you really spoil this game? )

@VofEscaflowne

I'm really loving the music and the visuals. The atmosphere this game creates fits my taste just right. Kind of wishing I'd sprung for the SE bundle now. hrm.
02/04/16, 19:58
@VofEscaflowne Not entirely. MH4 has chat only in lobbies, you can't chat during quests. Which is like, the most important time to do so!
02/04/16, 20:30
@Mop it up

Yeah, it's only the pre-set, "canned" text boxes that are available during actual gameplay.

Unless I missed something?

My connection stability with this game has been as follows....

Day 1 - Randoms: flawless
Day 2 - Randoms and Rocket: flawless
Day 3 - Randoms: flawless
Day 4 - Randoms: flawless
Day 5/6 - GDG: terrible.
Day 6 - Randoms: hit'n'miss
Day 7 - Randoms and Rocket: flawless, then terrible, then flawless
Day 8 - Randoms and TOMFZelda: flawless

Hard to isolate the key variables. So far I've narrowed it down to...
-Trying to play during peak internet hours (we're poor so we're on a free shared connection in this complex)
-Trying to play in the room that is slightly more shielded from the wifi.
-Dumb luck.

But, bottom line, I've had some awesome times questing with Tom F. Zelda and Rocket and randoms! I hope to successfully team up with GDG in the near future! I also hope to continue peer-pressuring Mop it up into getting the game soon But, I'll still play whenever you get it, pal!

@NinSage

I haven't had a bad online experience, yet!

And I'm glad I got to get in almost an hour of gameplay yesterday. It cleared out my 2 star quests, and opened up the "harder" ones. I now know how to encase. I'm excited to summon some shit. I was telling Amy in the mall about how I can use my bow like a machine gun. It's pretty awesome.
02/05/16, 13:14
Yeah, my online experience has been flawless as well...except for that one night that @NinSage and I tried to do some quests with @TheOldManFromZelda. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing.

I've been doing some grinding lately, fighting Ifrit over and over. I want that Sephiroth outfit!
02/05/16, 15:18
You guys should post in here more often if you intend to play online! I've only played with Lou here. Bit ahead in the 4 star quests though... but should still be fun!
02/05/16, 16:49
I'm down to play online with you guys! I'll be sure to post when I'm available.

If you ever see my online in the Friend List, feel free to invite yourself into the room and play!
