Super Mario Maker on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Haha! It's extra spicy. Let me know if you finish it!

I gotta get back into this game now that there are checkpoints...

@TriforceBun

I tried that level and couldn't even figure out what to do shortly after the beginning area. Though not a huge fan of these hard levels to begin with... no offense

Did anyone try my latest level? Was curious to see people's thoughts on the boss area. Seems the completion rate is pretty low though and that not many people bother beating it despite the checkpoint being right before it. It's definitely challenging but nothing unfairly so I think. Maybe Bowser's stomp attack freezing you is annoying but it can easily be seen coming and can be avoided!

I was having some trouble with the boss area. I'm not even sure why, but I unfortunately had to go and do something else and wasn't able to finish it in time. It is a really cool idea, though!

My issue with the boss area is the Bowser-stompin' Thwomp that forces you to kick the Bob-Omb instead of place it safely over the blocks.
I must admit it took me quite a few tries!

@ploot

Yeah I sort of ran out of room to give you enough room to safely drop it there but that's why I put the wooden door caved in a bit so it would at least land in there a bit easier if you throw it in. I'd like to say it's not to hard to do but I did that boss run so many times too

Your latest level is one of my favorites. The airship section has a good, natural-feeling difficulty to it. I could see it fitting into Super Mario Bros. 3 proper. The sub-area makes really good use of Bowser. I like that you have to pay attention to his movements while making your way through the environment. Getting that thwomp to knock him out after all of the grief he gives you is really satisfying.

I like the changes you made to the section right after the koopas and goombas, too.

@pokepal148

Haha. That's a pretty wild-looking scene! I'll check that level out the next time I'm playing this game.

@Octorockin

Glad you liked it! And yeah, I felt I needed to change it a bit after I uploaded it and how players who are quick will leave Bowser on the lower section, sort of ruining the battle. It can still happen I think but A LOT less likely. I really didn't know Bowser had such weird jumping patterns depending on the distance between Bowser and Mario. I guess you never really realize it unless he's put in such a tight space haha.

Nothing game changing this time around, but it's cool that they are giving more free DLC... bouncers could be fun. P-doors will make for more interesting ghost house options, and fire clown car means more shmup type activity.

Noticed this earlier. I still haven't jumped back into this game since before the checkpoint update. I want to but just haven't brought myself to do it. This game is a time sink for better or worse. I'll never forget how ridiculously addicted I was to it for 2 weeks straight. I had to put it down after that.

Sounds like solid additions, though Im not sure I get the P Switch thingy. Will need to look into it more. Bouncy platforms sounds awesome though. Not sure I care too much about the Clown Car thing. I hardly used it much in the first place.

@carlosrox

The fact that you can see the outlines of the P-doors even without hitting the switch first is throwing me off... cause you could just block a regular door with blocks for the same effect.

Cool free additions!

@carlosrox
It's similar to how Super Mario World had some hidden doors when you hit the P-Switch (notably in a couple ghost houses). Should make for a fun puzzle element.

@Hinph
That's true, but in certain game styles, you'd have other ways of breaking those bricks (like a Koopa shell, butt-stomp or spin-jump).
12/18/15, 00:23
Ah yes ok now it all makes sense. But if it has an outline line someone else mentioned then what IS the point?
12/18/15, 02:57
Nintendo just added EarthBound official stages and costumes! Holy shmooookes!
12/19/15, 06:29
@TriforceBun

They also updated the "Official" levels though I'm not really sure how long they've been there. There's some neat stuff though!

@TriforceBun

That's awesome! I'm looking forward to getting back into Super Mario Maker with my brother when I go home next week for the holidays.

Its been quite some time since I've played this. Its a feeling I haven't felt since.. *walks away*

The shmup thing is super-cool.

Super Mario Maker Bookmark website is live! I like it. Definitely gonna help to keep track of stuff and find levels a bit easier.
