The Culture of Today's America. A lot of people think that cops are the worst thing ever, completely corrupt, super-racist, and just planting evidence everywhere. But then you've got situations like Baltimore where some people think its OK to trash the entire city "because of cops," despite what their mothers think, going down to the riot and telling them to get their asses home (theres video somewhere of that; start with "Mother of the Year" and see what that yields). Someone is definitely wrong there, and its not the innocent businesses being looted. And who do you call to get things under control? The same cops that the riot has been started in reference to.

I've been to Baltimore multiple times, I LOVE the city, met some GREAT people there (in person, not text on the internet). But that was just horrendous. I heard stories before I saw any footage, and the words didn't do the videos justice. What went on..was not "ok."

Uh oh.

Obviously I have no objections to them creating their own sites to push their message. I think their sites are dumb and their message is dumb, but I'm not going to try to get them shut down.

So you don't support people shutting them out of conventions?
11/13/15, 00:10
@DapperDave Not really. I think it depends on the goals of the conventions though. I mean, at the end of the day conventions are usually privately run events and those who make the conventions can decide what their goals are and how they want to implement those goals. A lot of conventions specifically try to be "safe spaces" for various demographics (especially those that revolve around a specific demographic, like say GaymerX), and set higher standards for entry than say... the standards for showing up at the beach. So if the conventions want to make the decisions to exclude them, that's fine by me.

I also think that anyone on any side has the right to petition any convention who makes a decision that they don't like. And conventions have the right to ignore petitions. And people and advertisers have the right to boycott conventions. Yada yada.

Harassing conventions who make decisions that you don't like is not cool though. I think both "sides" have a problem with this.

@Mr_Mustache

At least they didn't kill anyone.
11/13/15, 00:37
@Hero_Of_Hyrule

No, you're right, but a lot of other things happened.

Its certainly unfortunate, I'm never in favor of anyone dying (I even grab flies by the wings and set them outside, and then I get to wash my filthy filty hands.). How many people each day die in hospitals from getting incorrect medicine? Egad, a ton.

EDIT- Linked to Baltimore story twice by accident, sorry. Corrected.

I know what happened. I live here.

I could get into how police tactics escalated the conflict, how I think the government mishandled the situation, how this is another case of a white dude trying to tell black people how to respond to their oppression, or how you seem to be more upset about broken windows than the murder of an innocent man, but I don't think any of that would be useful to you. You would probably just change the subject anyway. Instead, I'll ask you to consider this:

How mad would you have to be to go out and throw a rock through some store's window? How voiceless would you have to feel for that to be the only way to make yourself heard? Have you ever been so desperate in your life?

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

You do?! Why didn't you say something? I come down for Oriole games occasionally, stay in Glen Burnie.

The guy wasn't murdered. Involuntary Manslaughter, I'll accept that. I've learned from Law & Order that there has to be some extra attitude involved for it to be "murder." I get your point.

And I already said how precious life was up there (so don't mask the truth), even paying care to stupid flies whom the normal person would swat and / or stomp. YES, someone UNFORTUNATELY (its always unfortunate) died which started everything, but look at these other lives that are now affected. Lives and families ruined.

"How mad would you have to eb to go out and throw a rock through some store's window?" Lucky for me I have this thing ingrained in me where I know that thats wrong, and it overrides any feelings that I could have as such. I generally don't break the law unless you're talking about online smut, and sometimes I got a few miles per hour over the speed limit. There are a number of non-violent, legal alternatives to destroying someone's livelihood, one of whom wasn't even involved.

You're like..dangerously close to accidentally defending school shootings. I know that isn't your intent, but.. Yeah.

@Mr_Mustache
Trying to find some level of understanding for the way desperate people resort to desperate actions =/= defending anything. Breaking a window =/= shooting up a school.

Why did I have this weird feeling the talk wasn't about Gamergate anymore.
11/13/15, 23:35
I'd like to know if you guys actually think we ever accomplish anything in these threads. Other than making this a more morose place to hang out, that is.
11/14/15, 00:40
@kriswright

I've been saying that for a dozen pages. The answer is straight out no.
11/14/15, 00:56
Kris hates free speech confirmed.

That's actually a joke about people who think putting any kinds of limits on the content allowed on forums, or even suggestions on what people should and shouldn't post, is against free speech.
11/14/15, 02:29
@kriswright

I thought it was pretty hilarious when Zero told everyone to stop arguing in the Daily Thread and then immediately bumped this of all threads. Of course I fell right into the trap.
11/14/15, 03:24
@kriswright

If I had it my way Freddie Gray wouldn't have come up on here at all. I feel pretty strongly about the matter and I don't think discussion of it in this context would be productive. Maybe not even in a majority of online contexts. That's why I've been very limited in what I've said. I just didn't feel comfortable letting Mustache (or anyone) talk about it in that way without at least challenging the ideas he presented.

But yeah, I'm done with this conversation and happy to get back to talking about games for now. I have more I could say, but I don't think it would do any good and I don't really want to get into a full blown debate.
