Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

As Achhibbar said, there's a Google Doc I made to prepare for this. When you make your levels, please add them to the list also. It's in the OP but you can find the list at this link also.

To add a level to the list, fill out the survey in the OP.

The most convenient thing to do is add a level from each person and then favorite them, as TriforceBun said. However if you get a lot of people in there, it is usually easier to check this list for any new levels.

@DrFinkelstein

Good to know, thanks!

Today's the day for the checkpoint update! Does anyone know when this stuff goes live?
11/04/15, 17:35
Only thing I can figure is that it'll be later tonight since in the UK, the update is listed as November 5th and I imagine it's going live simultaneously in all regions.

First level I've made it a while, not as tough as some of my others. And it's different, well, because it's an underwater stage. Enjoy!

I just found out that this guy on Reddit completely copied my "What Awaits Below" level, adding a little story explaining the design choices and how it took him days to refine it. What confuses me is that you can't download someone's level and re-upload it under your name... so did he seriously go an re-create it block for block? I'm not sure whether to call him out on it or be flattered Though I did leave a comment on the level about copying it.

@VofEscaflowne

Oh, be flattered. Your work meant something to someone. Life goes on, and you (and now we) know who put in the major work in the first place! That's enough. :)

Event Courses are great and they unlock brand-new costumes.
I just played a Tri Force Heroes themed stage, and the costume is awesome!

@VofEscaflowne
Whoa. Did the guy make a post on reddit? May I see a link?

I'm not sure if I'll ever beat the new Gnat Attack. That thing is a monster And you have to restart if you die... no way. Beating level 1 is a total pain. I even brought out a second stylus!

I spent the night deleting and re-uploading my stages, now with checkpoints! Well, most of them anyway.
I'm sad to see the Miiverse comments go, and all my level codes in the database are now incorrect.

I'll send the new codes to Fink when I have more time.

@VofEscaflowne
Seems the guy did this a while back, too. What the heck??! So weird.
11/05/15, 08:43
Taking me longer than I expected to add checkpoints to all the levels... kind of tweaking the design of each as I go to make it more friendly or changing little things that bugged people or myself.

I'm very curious to see what impact checkpoints have on completion rates. It would be very nice to see less people giving up!
11/06/15, 12:51
@Hinph

Be sure to update me on your new uploaded code numbers!

-------------

I'll look into perhaps adding checkpoints myself. My levels don't quite need them, though I know Super Smash Maker does. I had built a secret warp to the second half just for that purpose.

Just to be clear though, we don't lose our stars when we delete stages? Just the comments and all that Miiverse stuff attached?

Also, have you guys enjoyed the Event Levels? Some parts are certainly tricky. I'm enjoying them and the costumes they unlock though.
11/06/15, 13:25
@DrFinkelstein
You will lose your star counts for the particular levels you delete, but your overall star count will remain. It kills me to see my most popular stages reduced to single digit plays. Just feels icky.

On another note, I REALLY wish there was an easier way for me to copy down twenty-something codes. I really just don't want to! Blahhhhh.

The event levels have been okay. I appreciate the new cosumes at least.

Finished:

#121 Pokes from the Underground (B14D-0000-00DA-F552)
#186 Vine-Chilling Adventures (0BE5-0000-00DA-A157)
#84 Chomp'n Spine Inferno (2BC0-0000-00DA-90C6)
#36 Chomp'n Spine Tundra (F8A6-0000-00DB-DBCB)
#115 That 1985 Feel (AA53-0000-00DA-5281)
#123 We Don't Need No Stinkin' P-Wing (07D9-0000-00DA-4AC2)
#40 Muncher Village (7744-0000-00DA-4200)
#136 Skeleboo Caverns (Hard Mode) (1605-0000-00D9-277E)
#70 Atop Spiketopia (B078-0000-00D9-0C21)

I'm going to leave the rest of my levels alone for various reasons.

Also, I have a duplicate of Atop Spiketopia at #75 for whatever reason... Not sure if that can be easily deleted without messing up the list!

@ploot

Yeah, it hurts even though my most popular course only had 45ish stars. Worse, after adding the checkpoint and tweaking it a tiny bit, it got 10 plays, zero stars, and an abysmal completion rate. The hell? I tweaked it back a little and tried again. Hah.

@Hinph

I will go through your levels, and Ploots, and make the updates soon. I have a busy day ahead though I did Ploot's first three. Deleting your duplicate should be very feasible.

In other news, I just played four levels of 100 Mario Challenge on Expert and… holy moly… THEY'VE DONE BETTER! The selection is now full of levels that are genuinely challenging but beatable and fun. I'm starring multiple levels in this mode when before I just wanted to get in and out and get the damn costume. Loving this new change. Great job Nintendo.
11/07/15, 14:35
I've uploaded a series of 4 stages based on the original Super Mario Bros. No gimmicks. Just "normal" levels like something you'd find in the original game, and they're meant to be played in order.

I'm excited to play these! I love classic-style levels.

Let me just say that I TOTALLY regret deleting the original versions of my stages.
For some reason I thought completion rate would jump up with the checkpoints, but nope. Now, even my popular levels show dismal attempt rates like 0/3. Depressing! Also, I miss all the awesome Miiverse posts that were attached to my stages. WAAAHHHHHHH!
Anyway, here are my new codes.

And yeah, I changed Yoshimanjaro to Koopamanjaro because it rolls off the tongue better. What was I thinking originally? Craziness!

Nice! I'll tacke these sometime today.

I made a few more courses!

Crafty Caverns 4140-0000-00E2-07E7
This one received a ton of fine-tuning to trim out excess difficulty. There's at least one part in it that wouldn't have made the cut if it wasn't for the newly-implemented checkpoint flag.

Duck Hunt 205E-0000-00E2-0B77
This is a simple homage to the Dog and Duck duo!

Cacophony of Cuccos E484-0000-00E2-2816
These cuccos are very aggravated. Run away from their feathery fury!
