Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl


As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Some nice rounds.

Notice the blatant attempted spam at the start? And this was after they beat me with a super spammy Lil Mac. I love teaching Spammers lessons. Love the ending KO as well.


Then she was gonna spam Dedede and taunt me in the process.... I love the bomb manouvering here. I was so happy to finish this at the last second before the cutoff.


This is quite funny. Nothing but falls.


Nice Samus v Samus action. Aggressive ending.


Some Capcom VS Capcom action. Love the second KO.

@anon_mastermind I never submitted a Smash Ballot, just couldn't think of anyone truly deserving. Only too late do I remember Junior and his Super Nintendo masterpiece...Bo Jackson's starring role in Tecmo Bowl and Scott Niedermayer of NHL HItz are also great candidates.


Besides them, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the supposed trio upcoming is at least two returning fighters (Wolf, Squirtle, Ivysaur, dare we hope for Snake or Ice Climbers?) and perhaps one new one, as it was with Lucas/Roy/Ryu.

I wish Ice Climbers would return. Make them New 3DS exclusive if the OG can't handle it. Just gimme Nana and Popo back. I think Wolf is a lock, he was probably planned for release alongside Star Fox Zero, but now that's been delayed, who knows. We'll probably still get him this year.

A miserable pile of rumors are implying that the next character is coming in just a few weeks, and is not a clone or "disappointment." Also apparently a "big deal."

"Big deal"...so it's gotta be Rusty Slugger, right?





But seriously, I kind of wish Nintendo would just announce characters in advance so these rumors could be less enticing...

Just don't post em here. I don't think anyone here wants leaks, especially not of a legitimately surprising character.

I swear if I bump into another leak thanks to Gamexplain or fucking NeoGAF ima lose my shit. It's obnoxious as shit that NeoGAF allows shit like that right in the topic title.

I humbly request if anyone comes upon a leak to at least spoiler tag it.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. I mean, I'll have to look at a leak if it gets out (since it'd be super hard to avoid), but I'd much, much rather it be revealed by Nintendo in a cool video than by some blurry screenshot by some online clown who throws around the n-word liberally.

Honestly, there's no character I DON'T want to see in Smash, I'd be happy with anyone, except Bayonetta (she just doesn't fit) and to a lesser extent Snake. I mean, I'd be happy to get Snake back, but he is less deserving than others. He was fun to use in Brawl, though I never really mastered him.

Still want me Simon Belmont, Ridley, and Goemon above all else. Everyone else I'm cool with. Cept Bayonetta.

Whoa, did we know about this? Along with regular replays, you can now select a simple Highlight Reel which I believe is 30 seconds? It seems the game edits it itself. Testing it out now. Did I miss this news or did it slip through the cracks? A bunch of replays from just the other day don't work either. Was this quietly patched in?

Anyways I got some decent rounds coming, plus that highlight reel thing. Honestly though, the highlight reel doesn't seem any good, based on the snippet I saw it creating for me. Might as well just upload the entire 3 minute round.

So this guy beat me once with a spammy Dr. Mario by a lucky side Smash in a round that coulda gone either way, so he decides to say I suck and say that I have "NO TALENT". So I kicked his ass the next round.

He didn't stick around at all once the round was over, probably choked I got him good. No chance to pour salt on his wounds :( I'm sure he was thoroughly embarrassed. Just like that Megaman who thought he was "2FAST4U".

Highlight Reel version


These round against Mario were kinda sloppy, but the block/grab and up smash dependence didn't help matters much either. There's several hits here you can see in the replay where it's JUST a total "how the hell did I not hit HIM?" sorta deal.

I was just playing with fire in the later rounds. Good shot timing. These matches taught me some things.


I legitimately don't understand how I didn't hit him a few times in this match. Especially when we both did the Smash at the same time. How did his beat mine? Cuz he's Mario? Mario has crazy hit priority I've noticed.

I call this one the POOP SCOOPER!

Also tried the highlight reel for the first time myself...though I guess it's hard to pick highlights from a match against a super campy Luigi. He even threw out the "BORING" tag after the game and left, first For Glory jerk I've seen a long while, haha.


So yeah, I may have stayed up until 4am playing for glory last night...and the night before...

This is still the game I just cannot stop coming back to.

It was amazing to play Splatoon again the other day, and Mario Maker will also be played when that patch comes, but Smash is the one I need on an almost daily basis. Does that make it my favorite Wii U game?? Does that mean I'm a Smash freak??

Rewatched that last replay with the Yellow Yoshi, man he got fuckin' eaten alive.

@carlosrox I only play Smash maybe once a week lately. But I inevitably play it for like 6 hours straight....until 5am...which is probably why I only play it once a week...

So we're getting DLC characters before the year's up, right?

Including the Ballot character ? Or do they come later?

I'm guessing that Direct that Kimishima confirmed will include whatever Smash DLC they plan on releasing, along with possible Zelda TPHD announcement?

Yeah I often mean to play for a short period and end up getting stuck. I've missed several workouts thanks to this game and it makes me feel like a very bad boy.

My bold hard predictions:

a) We'll get the rumored three-character DLC update in either December or January
b) This update will have two returning fighters and one new one, just like the Lucas/Roy/Ryu update
c) Those fighters will be Wolf, Squirtle, and Inkling
d) The results of the Smash Ballot will be announced, but "development just started so please be patient."

Why Squirtle? Is he rumored? I have little interest in Squirtle returning (we have enough Pokemon goddamnit), and just the same amount of interest in Wolf. Not that I won't be happy to get whoever, they're just not my first, second, or even fifth choices. Hyped for Inkling though.

And Simon Belmont/Ridley/Goemon :) Master Higgins would be awesome as well

I doubt the ballot will result in only one character though. That'd be a missed opportunity. They should do like 2 or 3 based on the ballot. Please everyone. I'm sure whoever we get out of the ballot will be good. I expect craziness.

@carlosrox No hard rumors lately as far as I know regarding character identities, though I think the pre-release ESRB leak had Dr. Mario, Dark Pit (who were not yet revealed and not expected to come back) as well as Lucas (who became DLC) and Wolf. Plus Star Fox Zero was supposed to come out this fall, and that would have been a good promotion opportunity, so Wolf seems the most likely to be brought back to me.

As for Squirtle...well, there just aren't that many past fighters to bring back at this point, and I'd say he's probably the most popular one outside of Snake (who obviously would be trickier to make happen if Konami's not feeling it for some reason). Unless of course Sakurai changed his mind about Ice Climbers. I'd rather see Ivysaur, but Squirtle's just more popular. And I don't see Pichu or Young Link ever coming back.

@nate38 "Please be patient"? Don't you mean "Please understand"? ;)

I could see the Ice Climbers being Wii U-only DLC. There is now a stage that's Wii U-exclusive, so that sets precedence that some DLC could be Wii U-only. They may also be able to work as NEW 3DS-exclusive.

Squirtle was popular? News to me.

If Konami's gonna get a rep no one makes more sense than Simon Belmont or Goemon. Bring back the classic Konami jingle in the trailer and watch the feels happen, especially considering Konami has now become a complete joke. Easy money for Koward Konami to make as well.
