Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

This game is good stuff, but I'm starting to wonder what kind of DLC we might see in the future.

I'd like to see new level themes! If you could pick three (with each bringing with it an exclusive environmental thing), what would you pick? I think I'd go with...

-Desert, with Quicksand tiles
-Snow/Ice, with MELTING Ice tiles (that you can put stuff in SMB3-style, like Munchers and Coins)
-Forest/Jungle (SMW would be Forest, NSMBU would be Jungle), with Pulley Platforms (like in SMB1 1-3)

It'd be cool if each came with new music, like the athletic theme for Snow/Ice.

The most obvious would be SMB2 options, of course.

But the desert tile sets would be my number 1 choice, complete with Pokey and the Angry Sun.

@TriforceBun

Someone already found the angry sun in the game's files so maybe we'll be getting that along with a desert theme. Hopefully soon rather than later!

Decided to take a go at making a level with only one item from each column then sticking with it. I think what I have here is a solid course... hopefully.

So Octorockin and Ploot beat my last level as Racoon Mario. Didn't realize that was feasible. Gotta try it myself now.

Just finished my new level!

Quite fun to make and hopefully enjoyable! A few secrets but nothing too hard to reach.

Wow, this is awesome. I was wondering why one of my levels was suddenly getting a lot more plays than the others. It's on Nintendo's website

Awesome! That reminds me that I still need to beat that level...

Did a short, fun underwater one to try some new things out:

@canonj

I'm surprised it's the only level listed with a hard difficulty out of the 10 they picked. It's not THAT bad aside from maybe the boss... but it can still be completed quite quickly! You have shells and can jump on him and you even have a third option if you have the leaf power up and can just whack him with your tail. Add in a helmet on top of that and it also gives you extra defense.

@TriforceBun I think more skins could be fun too, even if they're not the most nostalgic. Seeing the All-Stars graphics for Mario 1 and 3 could be cool.

I think they should add Luigi too. It would definitely affect how some of these levels are made.

I think I have you all (everyone who put their courses in the spreadsheet) followed on the "makers" page. Should make it easier to keep up.

It seems silly that there's no way to automatically follow your Miiverse friends.

This is incredible. I made Nintendo's Twitter AND Nintendo Minute

@VofEscaflowne

Fantastic and hearty congratulations. You've made some impressive levels, so you deserve the accolades!

I followed everyone in the spreadsheet and tried to play at least one level from each creator, but I ran out of rental time. I'm looking forward to digging into your levels when I grab the game for realz, though. NW levels are definitely a cut above!

@VofEscaflowne
Nice going, man!
