Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015. Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are. Four Main Themes To Choose From! Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. UWhat's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more! The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all. I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey. I've had this game rented for a week now. It's a pretty great package. It amazes me how inviting and accessible Nintendo can make the experience of content creation.
The 100 Marios experience is, of course, a mixed bag. It may be inconsistent by definition, but it's almost always surprising and interesting (auto-play levels aside). Expert is a real bitch, though.
I've made a few quickie levels so far. Some slapdash (to unlock the next set of materials), some slightly less so. Nothing too ambitious so far. Almost all of them have a clear rate of, like, 5%. But I didn't really think they were that hard. And there's an easy alternate path through most of them!
My preferred style of level is a wide-open one which puts one's platforming skills to the test. Levels with tons of obstacles and enemies can get frustrating and discontinuous. I like the idea of creating a speedrunnable level with a steady "rhythm".
Here's my shitty levels. Please play and star them so that I can make more shitty levels:
Somebody call the ASPCA!! Run!! (65E1-0000-0081-C9B8)
Run! It's raining Goombas! (91C3-0000-0081-D02A)
You might need that spring... (DAD1-0000-0082-3644)
Hop,Step,Jump! Go for the gold!! (FD95-0000-0082-C355)
Entropy always increases... (D91F-0000-0088-52E0)
Risk vs. Reward - The Rematch!! (3CE2-0000-008C-D2D3)
I actually have to return my rental today, so I'll spend the day trying out some NW levels. (I'll definitely buy it in the future, too.) |

Avoid Waluigi! - 7AF1-0000-008E-6800 Waluigi is determined to be the star of this level. Avoid those mystery mushrooms so he doesn't get his way! This course is a cakewalk if you don't treat the mystery mushrooms like hazards, but it's a fun challenge if you do! @cooliocuneoFree Fall Castle is great. I was so close to beating it as an Inkling, but Bowser knocked my costume off! @DrFinkelsteinI almost ran out of time! That course is packed with creativity, and it was fun playing as some characters that I hadn't seen before, too. @AnandI got a good laugh out of your courses. They're fun! |

I took a bit of a break from NW stages and tried out some from Reddit. EVERYONE should try this guy, Spanky's stages. He has a couple murder mysteries, a sweet river/jungle stage, a stage involving Mario seeing invisible items, a gravity-changing stage.... This is some of the most creative stuff I have seen and continually surprises me regarding what can be done with such simple tools. Here's one of his stages. Follow him! He's good. 4ABB-0000-008D-D10E @NinSageThat was quite entertaining! The Blooper... The Blooper... Oh man. |

Really enjoyed playing your guy's stages over the weekend, some great ideas. Will have to try out those Reddit stages too. The Sack of Koopa Town 8C1B-0000-0089-493C The indylic and peaceful Koopa Town is brought to it's knees when a destructive newcomer stops at nothing to achieve his goals. More experiential than challenging. A guy on Miiverse said it was a "Sad level". |
