Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

My first two levels.

Classic Travels. 5EEF-0000-0074-1FDF Fairly straight forward.

Free Fall Castle F973-0000-008C-D2DO Got one tricky part if you're not patient. The Bowser flames add some random difficulty.

Please give them a try, hopefully they're "Star" worthy.

I had this idea to do one based on 'Smash Bros.' or at least characters from the game. So it's a level which is a series of challenges of varying degrees of difficulty based around different characters. You have the max amount of time but honestly, if you don't know what you're doing there's a chance you could be cutting it close. If anyone gets to part two of the level and is either having trouble with time, or just wants to not have to beat part 1 to keep trying it, there is a 'checkpoint' system that's hidden so that it's not too troublesome. Just let me know and I'll share the secret with you (or just find it yourself!

Each character uses a different amiibo suit, just be warned though none of them are ones you can't get my tapping an amiibo anyway.

I've had this game rented for a week now. It's a pretty great package. It amazes me how inviting and accessible Nintendo can make the experience of content creation.

The 100 Marios experience is, of course, a mixed bag. It may be inconsistent by definition, but it's almost always surprising and interesting (auto-play levels aside). Expert is a real bitch, though.

I've made a few quickie levels so far. Some slapdash (to unlock the next set of materials), some slightly less so. Nothing too ambitious so far. Almost all of them have a clear rate of, like, 5%. But I didn't really think they were that hard. And there's an easy alternate path through most of them!

My preferred style of level is a wide-open one which puts one's platforming skills to the test. Levels with tons of obstacles and enemies can get frustrating and discontinuous. I like the idea of creating a speedrunnable level with a steady "rhythm".

Here's my shitty levels. Please play and star them so that I can make more shitty levels:

Somebody call the ASPCA!! Run!!
(65E1-0000-0081-C9B8)

Run! It's raining Goombas!
(91C3-0000-0081-D02A)

You might need that spring...
(DAD1-0000-0082-3644)

Hop,Step,Jump! Go for the gold!!
(FD95-0000-0082-C355)

Entropy always increases...
(D91F-0000-0088-52E0)

Risk vs. Reward - The Rematch!!
(3CE2-0000-008C-D2D3)

I actually have to return my rental today, so I'll spend the day trying out some NW levels. (I'll definitely buy it in the future, too.)

Avoid Waluigi! - 7AF1-0000-008E-6800

Waluigi is determined to be the star of this level. Avoid those mystery mushrooms so he doesn't get his way!

This course is a cakewalk if you don't treat the mystery mushrooms like hazards, but it's a fun challenge if you do!

@cooliocuneo

Free Fall Castle is great. I was so close to beating it as an Inkling, but Bowser knocked my costume off!

@DrFinkelstein

I almost ran out of time! That course is packed with creativity, and it was fun playing as some characters that I hadn't seen before, too.

@Anand

I got a good laugh out of your courses. They're fun!

Not so much a level as like... an artsy fartsy concept piece? yea... it happened.... enjoy!

I took a bit of a break from NW stages and tried out some from Reddit.

EVERYONE should try this guy, Spanky's stages.

He has a couple murder mysteries, a sweet river/jungle stage, a stage involving Mario seeing invisible items, a gravity-changing stage.... This is some of the most creative stuff I have seen and continually surprises me regarding what can be done with such simple tools.

Here's one of his stages. Follow him! He's good.

That was quite entertaining! The Blooper... The Blooper... Oh man.

@ploot

Thanks! I'll add him. Is this the guy who made the SMW ghost house stage where you keep going into pipes and it flips upside-down?

I also have to highly recommend a guy named Miidas. I stumbled upon one of his stages in 100-Mario Challenge and it was great. Then I followed him and played the rest of his stages--they were all great! Very Mario-style with really cool unique gimmicks (like a back-and-forth water-filled/non-water-filled level that reminds me of SM64's Wet-Dry World).

How to Make a Popular Super Mario Maker Level

Breaks down the top 50 levels by type, etc.

Much as I would suspect, only a few "real" levels are in the top 50.

Really enjoyed playing your guy's stages over the weekend, some great ideas.
Will have to try out those Reddit stages too.

The Sack of Koopa Town
8C1B-0000-0089-493C

The indylic and peaceful Koopa Town is brought to it's knees when a destructive newcomer stops at nothing to achieve his goals.
More experiential than challenging.
A guy on Miiverse said it was a "Sad level".

Thanks, man! I am loving your levels! I find your approach to secrets and powerups very satisfying for the player.

As for the 7 Deadly Sins level, y'know, in fiction they say "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Similarly, sometimes a blooper is just a blooper. ............ this level is not one of those times.

Here's another level!

Green and Red Ahead - DC70-0000-0090-EC5C

I tried to color coordinate the enemies and objects in this level.

Finally made a new course this week.

Vine-Chilling Adventures: 7313-0000-0092-2A87

Should be a piece of cake.

Wow, this is awesome. I was wondering why one of my levels was suddenly getting a lot more plays than the others. It's on Nintendo's website

New stage, in the vein of my earlier "Five Trials of Goomba-Tossing" level:

The 12 Tests of Combat Coliseum
F607-0000-0092-3300

It's not extra-spicy, but there's some challenge there for sure. Good luck!

Man, I'm halfway through a level called The 12 Tasks of Mario and it'll totally look like a ripoff now.
