Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Ugh I'm just getting multitudes of different Wii U internet issues when trying to get it connected to the wifi here. Unless the landlord changed up something, something's just wrong somewhere. Wii U is the odd man out now. My phone was consistently the best (it was fine until earlier today it cut out as well), then the PC has been off and on, and Wii U has just been unable to connect once for days, unless I was correct and saw an online Wara Wara plaza earlier. But now I've got it 2/3rds of the way but it fails to connect to the internet. It connects to the device, but not the internet. The Wii U suggests interference/weak signal, so I dunno.

Frustrating as shit having an online dead Wii U. I guess Nintendo's online isn't as shitty as people like to pretend, eh?

I miss my SMM :(

I miss my Splatoon :(

I miss my Smash :(

Still ain't working tomorrow then I need to get a Telus guy here or a Nintendo guy on the phone. Yeesh.

@TriforceBun

Ooh, I'm excited to try it this weekend!

@nate38

Thanks for letting me know. I thought I had play tested everything but that's something I missed! I deleted the original version and uploaded a new one.

Fink, would you be able to replace the current code in the spreadsheet with the new one? Bullets on Parade - 60E5-0000-0068-6A42. Thanks!

@nate38
Haha, yeah. It seems to have become my "thing."

Secret doors and bedrooms everywhere!

@Mr_Mustache

Just improvise and have fun with it! We're not professionals here. Hah.

I go into most of my levels with little idea of what I actually want to do with them, and then I think of stuff as I go and modify everything else from there... and, yeah, sometimes you'll find that you've been working on something for an hour and realize you just want to scrap it and start fresh, but I think that's all a part of any creative process.

You guys might know this already, but I just discovered a quick way to follow other Negative Worlders. If someone from NW has played your level but you haven't played one of theirs, you can find their name in the list of people who've played your level, click on their face and then see their levels and follow them.

Beats going to the spreadsheet every time, and particularly if you're looking for a quick NW level fix.

@TriforceBun

As your Executive Alligator Wrestler, I object to you giving out the game I helped finance for free. I'm from the Martin Shkrelli school of financial backing. I think you should charge $750 dollars for Tadpole Treble.

@Mr_Mustache

Remaking popular levels in Super Mario Maker shouldn't be a surprise that they've already been made Just make something original! It's the only way to really learn since you're being creative instead of copying the foundations of someone else.

Good call! Why let modern society enjoy the benefits of something when there're vast amounts of money that can be charged for it? No wonder I hired you as my Executive Alligator Wrestler.

@kriswright

Indeed that's a quick way to go to see specific users. I hope people continue to add their levels to the spreadsheet but just last night I was using your method somewhat to play various levels without typing in the codes. I knocked back all of Gui's levels.

I usually go through my followed NW list everyday like this:

CLICK "He didn't make anything today."
CLICK "He didn't make anything today."
CLICK "She didn't make anything today."
CLICK "He didn't make anything today."
CLICK "OH! YAY!"

I wish you could get a notification next to a person's face showing that they have something new. It's not a big deal I suppose, but it'd be a quicker way to stay up-to-date on everyone.

@ploot
Yeah that would be greatly appreciated. I prob won't get my net working today or tomorrow but worst case scenario I'll have like 3 new ones to upload on Friday. Some fun ones ahead :D

I just finished uploading some new courses!

Frights & Bites - C330-0000-0069-E0D5
The person who owned this ghost house must have really liked munchers.

Coin Cavern Conundrum - A1E0-0000-0069-D914
Bowser is mining a cave filled with coins and is bringing the loot back to his castle! Stop him from getting the funds he needs to build another airship!

Competitive Car Buyers - E7B9-0000-0069-B1E1
Mario is looking to purchase a Koopa Clown Car, but the dealership's stock is quickly selling out!

Forest Temple - Ocarina of Time - 31D8-0000-0069-A67E
This is a very condensed version of my favorite dungeon from the Legend of Zelda series.

@VofEscaflowne

I think I'm creative enough; I can do CHALLENGING, but I don't know whats FUN. And when I do CHALLENGING, I get 2.5% completion, and about 8 people who clear it. Well, that sucks, especially considering that I've beaten every-single-level I've set out on. I've not once turned away or skipped a stage. If the creator can beat it, I can beat it, and I can tell you with great certainty that everyone in this thread hasn't beaten my short little fart of a stage.

@ploot

What did that update last night entail?

EDIT-

@Mr_Mustache
I was so embarrassed. I still feel stupid about that.

Maybe Super Mario Maker is my outlet to healing.

ANYWAY, the update, yeah. I have no clue as to its purpose.

Play my ONE MILLION STAGES!

Finishing up a shoot em up stage.
It's been interesting to see how designing it is very different from a platform or puzzle stage.
09/25/15, 03:29
The patch sure is large for just simple improvements to stability and such, right? I want to believe that there is more to it.

Apparently somebody found possible mention of the angry sun enemy in the game files? It's hardly confirmation, but it is a little suspicious.

SUCCESS! (Is there no way to embed YT vids at the start time like I wanted to? Was trying to put the Smash narrator in there lol)

Anyways, YES YES YES!! Net finally working again! Heh, I changed the IP settings and all that crap and now finally it starts working with the default auto obtain options. Oh well.

And I'm greeted with my first medal! What a treat to come back to!

Sweet k ima load a couple of my new stages then play some more NW stages. Good to be back in business!

@Mr_Mustache

Play this one then!! 6059-0000-005E-4FB5

Here's a video how to beat it too:
09/25/15, 04:12
Uh what just happened? Why can't I see past the Youtube link? Lame.

Anyways the only new stage I have completed 100% at the moment is Big Little Planet. I think it's super fun and I like the thumbnail I got that I made just for level.

Fun, lots of varied combat and platforming. Lots of options. Like what I did with the sounds too. Ah so good to get online again!

Hopefully I can finish off the others tonight.
