Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Yes, you really have to go into Peter's levels with an Eye of the Tiger mentality... some days I just don't think I'm strong enough. :(

Just bought this game via eBay (digital download) for $49.95. Hope my early levels will be at least tolerable

With how many people I've seen who don't even bother searching out secrets when they're hinted at, I doubt many people will bother not taking the checkpoint haha. Good idea though! I really hope they include actual checkpoints in an update.

Only the people who know how to press buttons (as you said) will play the whole level - but yes, I do think Cubed's idea is a great one. Even if it fails among the non gaming/non button pushing public, perhaps the NW peeps can adapt that idea for some of their harder levels. It would be much appreciated I'm sure

Can you boot it up the Sledge Bros.'s Tall, Tall Tower?

Jesus some of you (Ploot?) make levels fast.

Ugh, my Wii U still won't connect to the WiFi here which is really sucking. Can't play anyone's levels and can't upload any of mine. This shit better get fixed soon. Can't even get my dose of Smash For Glory either.

@ploot
Is this a stage that focuses on verticality? Has anyone figured out if the feeling of a really high stage can be pulled off yet? 2 screens tall feels pretty short, though I guess doors and pipes could help that a bit.

@TriforceBun

Thanks! I have some challenging courses in the works right now. I'll be sharing those soon!

@Hinph

The added pressure of having a limited amount of lives is what actually makes that mode really appealing to me. There's an incentive to find 1-up mushrooms under those conditions, and it's fun trying to hold onto as many of those lives as you can.

@carlosrox
There's nothing fast about how I make my levels, but yeah, I seem to be making A LOT.

I'm on it whenever I have a moment's reprieve. I'm addicted and that might not be a good thing.

Also, yeah. Pipes, pipe and more pipes.
I finally found out that there's a finite number of warp pipes you can have in a level. It made me sad.

@ploot
Well obviously there's a limit :p

I've used quite a few in some of my levels, what is the limit? Is it its own limit or is it shared with another piece?

Yeah the first week or so the game actually affected my life. It still sorta is, but not quite as bad. No online on my Wii U is killing me though :(

So it should be pretty safe to assume this game'll get DLC right? I hope Nintendo's learned through Smash and Splatoon that giving people content they want is a good revenue stream and a good way to keep people interested in a game.

I'd love for more themes, enemies, music tracks, you name it. Checkpoints and slopes would also be very welcome additions. I need me some desert and ice themes.

Whoa. This game only has 3 ratings on here? I just added it to my list myself. 9.9 :)

Going to boot this up tonight. And secrets/tips/must-do's/do-not's I need to know about?

There's a thread dedicated to things not to do and I think a few of my last posts go over things that at least I don't like to see.

My advice is figure out how enemies spawn and behave, their patterns, etc. Other then that I'd say avoid spamming things, having things show up randomly, and think about what you're doing. And play test it a bunch. Cheap deaths are the worst.

And enjoy. The game's a treat.

You have my word I won't place an invisible block right at a the edge of cliff

@cooliocuneo

Just make a simple, linear level to start out and be careful to make sure the enemy and obstacle placement isn't unfair... can't ever go wrong with a design like that! Fun every time.

So I spent the better part of an hour the other night making a "Negative World will surely love this!" Mega Man 2 Dr Wily Stage 1 level..only to find out that not only has it been done greatly already by someone else, but its already been done MULTIPLE times.

Enthusiasm once again snuffed out. I still have no idea how to make something fun, nor do I have ideas. Terrible.
09/24/15, 02:04
I posted a level just now that I made last night. Peter already played it! Haven't read the comment yet but I hope you liked it!

It's a dual-path level where you can choose your way through. I hope it's interesting enough. I want to get better at making my levels more aesthetically pleasing. I feel like I could always refine them. Ah well.

I called this one For Glory but really I dunno. All my levels tend to start with the intent of being more fun than challenging but then I put in all sorts of tricky things but in the end it doesn't seem that hard but that's because I know the solutions. So this one does seem trickier than others I might have made so hell, lets call it For Glory. Stephen's For Glory, for what that's worth.

So is it possible to use a warp pipe to another area on the same slate? It always pushes me to the other slate and then I'd have to go back but sometimes I'd like to stay on the singular slate. Is that possible?

FUCK this WiFi!!!!!!!

Why does my phone work with it but my Wii U won't connect?!?! Frustrating as fuck!! I wanna play some goddamn Smash Splatoon and Mario Maker online ffs!!

When I first turned it on the Wara Wara plaza appeared to be online! I jump into Miiverse and get an error! Fuckballs!
09/24/15, 04:42
@ploot What is it with you and invading bedrooms? Feels like I'm doing that in every level you make! (And it's always fun)

@canonj Cool level, but I got stuck above the ceiling in the bonus room...

Tadpole Treble, Featuring Mario

This was not easy to do. Since the music never resets in the editor, I had to keep going to Coursebot (or "Upload") to play the stage rhythmically. It took a while, but I'm happy with the results.
