Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

So I haven't got the game yet but have been watching a bunch of it on Youtube and some of the levels that have already been made are absolutely insane!!

@Pokefreak911
Uh I could swear you've played one of my levels already.

@DrFinkelstein

Sorry, but could you delete the old version of my most recent level, Pokes from the Underground?

One of my enemies is only regenerating some of the times, forcing suicide. Grrr, I don't know how I'm going to design around this one!

Edit: An hour to fix that. Wow. Well, my level is easier now as a result, but that may be a good thing.

@carlosrox
Can't have been me, maybe there's an impostor going around :O
I saw that @Smerd apparently played a level by a Pokefreak and must have thought it was me, but I haven't got the game yet. Strange...

@kriswright

Can you tell me which three so I can most easily correct them?

Edit: Wait, it's clear and I appreciate your naming convention.

I'm deleting the original Shell-nanigans!, Shoe-ganingans!, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

@Hinph

Done!

------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------

That puts us as 122 stages as of this morning.

So Hinph, I hear you had a nice little venture in the real estate biz, how'd that go for you?

What kind of idiot doesn't call it Mad Mario or Fury Toad?

Spit out another level kind of fast, but I think it's pretty fun. Cheetah speed auto-scrolling Airship level where the trick is to flutter and bounce off enemies and obstacles almost constantly.

@pokepal148

Hah. I got a little bit lost and stopped to eat pizza and get back to designing... you've won for now, but I'm guessing I have to do something with that sexy boot I found in the attic...

@Guillaume

I considered both, mostly to avoid any copyright snoops who might object to the actual title, but honestly felt those names were sorta blah. Mad Mario has a different cadence than Mad Max. And Fury Toad implies I used Toad somewhere.

@kriswright

I'm not very good at coming up with puns, so no fruit is too low for me. I basically pick them off the ground.

Posted a simple little level. I'd like to play more with experimenting. It's amazing to me how people are using these tools already. I feel like I'm being left behind! The level is called Muncher Marathon! Don't have the ID but hopefully you can find me from another code on here.

The ability to sort through and find levels to play on MM is extremely limited.
Their featured section is an absolute joke - featured for what reason?
I hope they patch in a way to sort through uploaded levels better based on different criteria.

- % of people who gave up
- Ave completion time
- theme
- etc.

NW has made this game 10x more enjoyable.

Gah it's so hard to pinpoint who most of you are on my Wii U due to user names and such being completely different than they are here on NW.

I can't tell you how damn confusing that Stephen guy on my list is. I have trouble remembering who the hell that is from NW, usually my first thought is Stephen, but no, it's Shadowlink or Fink or somebody. I think Pauloot and Hinph are the only ones I feel I recognize instantly.

@kriswright
A pun is a pun! (Wait, these aren't even puns) Mad Mario sounds a bit weird on its own but Fury Toad is just too good to pass up, even if he's nowhere to be seen. But that could easily be remedied!

@carlosrox
I have the same issues. It'd be good if there was a master list in the first post or somethin'!
09/22/15, 00:10
@carlosrox
Stephen is Fink.

I totally understand your frustration though!

@TriforceBun
Yeah, a master list would be great. Edit one in, Stephen! Err, Fink!!

@carlosrox

Well, I'm thinking about posting an 8-bit version. Maybe I'll use the puns on that one.

Shadowlink is Shadowlink, ya goon!

(Or Tim. But mostly Shadowlink.)

@achhibbar
Yeah I started to remember that one, since they're at least similar sounding.

@Shadowlink
Isn't there 2 of you on NW?

I remember Fabien as VOE now though, so kudos to Mario Maker for that. If anything, it'll finally teach me who y'all are on my Wii U.

Oh and I think Nate is Nate so that's easy enough.

And there's definitely a Pokefreak who played one of my stages, and I even remember seeing the 911 in his name. Maybe I imagined it.

For any of my followers I have another level up. I feel pretty good about it. Some neat little ideas in there and I finally threw in a Raccoon tail.

Are my stages easy? I swear I find a lot of the early NW stages I've played too hard, and kinda for the wrong reasons. I'm still only up to page 17 or so of the thread though so I have no idea how the later levels improved.

That one level with the giant shell secret I played felt cryptic to me, though I also felt like an idiot when I got to the end and said where the fuck is this secret I saw in the comments, especially because I used the giant shell myself in a similar way in one of my levels. I also broke it when I was running back with the shell and picked up one of the springs. That stage felt a little too busy and too much was skippable. I wasn't really understanding all the springs and coins by the pirahnas UNTIL I finally realized the shell thing. I also thought following the shell was too difficult. I fucked it up like 3 times and after that thought it wasn't worth it. I blame the springs. The springs in this game are too tedious to deal with. Whenever I see levels that use the springs a lot I get turned off.

Don't be afraid to give me critical feedback, I really would appreciate it. I sincerely want my levels to feel good, clear, and not too challenging. But then, the finish percentages are pretty low on all my stages and I think, the fuck, my stages aren't even hard. And they're meant to be run through quickly if you die. I've played a lot of levels that made it extremely tedious to replay quickly. I mean, when you die, and you've already seen what the level has to offer, I think it's a mistake to force people to redo things that feel like a chore. My Cheep Cheep P switch levels are the exception, as they're meant to be hard. I dunno, maybe I just don't like dying in other people's levels? I really have low patience for that.

Ha, maybe this shoulda been in the MM Pet Peeves thread.
