Super Mario Maker on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Shell-nanigans! - D6FA-0000-0051-DDF7

If you haven't tried out one of my levels yet, this is the one I recommend to start with. It's got a very simple main gimmick that's pretty fun and simple to complete. It's also chock full of hidden secrets. It's also another level that demonstrates my obsession with Egypt.

EDIT: Had to fix two glitches I found, so this is Shell-nanigans! (v 1.01), I suppose.

Then I guess I will walk like an Egyptian.

@DrFinkelstein

Yeah, they'll eventually be deleted from the game once I reach my upload limit anyway.

@gojira

Since I'm aiming to curate this list to be cleanest, I'll delete past levels when a true replacement has been made. I will presume 'v2' or 'redux' to mean this.

Haha! I was quite tired.

@chrisguy
Awesome! That's my next level to tackle.

@DrFinkelstein

Yeah, I'm planning on using v2, v3, etc. when updating a level. So any lower number would be redundant.

I put up another level. Nothing really impressive I would say. It's more of a taste of Mario 3.

Is it possible to have a middle ground for difficulty? Some of my stages are challenging, but not CRAZY challenging. I generally choose "For Fun" because of this.

@ploot

I have mixed feelings on that.

1.) I'd really want this to be the same across all stages so I'd want people to go back and rate their stages.

2.) Having more than two options really kind of allows too much decision making in a sense. I thought the Smash Bros way would be easiest and it's up to people to decide if they made it for a tough challenge at the core or more to make classic Mario levels, have fun, entertain, etc.

Do others want three options? Would people go back and re-consider their own ratings at all?

Yeah it's a tough call. We have so many on there already. But yeah, when I was labeling mine, I thought mine wasn't TOO hard and kind of had a fun gimmick, but it still felt challenging to novice Mario players. We can probably just leave it as is I guess.

I am really proud of my newest level. Not hard at all but just a really fun concept I thought of last night. Makes me smile.

Faced by an onslaught of evil, the people could do nothing, but appeal to the gods. In their last hour, as doom drew near, they left their future in the hands of fate.

Why don't Japanese people ever star my levels?

Now I know how Microsoft feels.

@DrFinkelstein

I'd personally like something in the middle, because that's where most of my levels tend to fall. I've never set out to make any "for glory" levels, but some of them are tough to the point where they might frustrate somebody who just wants a casual frolic in the meadows.

I prefer the binary system. And, really, who gives a damn? Just pick whichever you think fits and move on with your life. No one's gonna be mad because, like, your For Fun level was 15% harder than they expected.

Moonscape Mayhem - 7A7B-0000-0053-A6ED - This is my first level that tells a complete story. I'd be curious to see if anyone is able to "read" the story of the level. Let me know if you think you've got it figured out.

Updated Shoe-nanigans! after watching my wife and brother-in-law struggle with it at a barbecue this evening. Decided the iceblock track was just plain unforgiving to a moderate player and wanted to cut down on the frustration factor. For me, it feels a little too easy, but maybe that's the way it ought to be. 9A66-0000-0053-87D2. I wish there was a way to update these without having to get a whole new code and everything. Also sucks to lose the previous comments when I delete the old one, but thanks to everyone who commented on this and Shell-nanigans before I updated them.

One more bonus level:

Love in a Time of Earthquakes - 77C0-0000-0054-06E0 - A Bowser Castle level built around a few basic components and one pretty good earthquake gimmick. Rescue Mario as Peach!

Got another one. It's my first castle/Bowser stage. It's funny cause it actually didn't start as a Castle stage. I was just trying to make a level based around some odd elements I had thrown together when messing around (karibo's shoe, spike helmet and the clown copter). After making it in a standard Mario 3 style I realized it might be an interesting castle stage. And after switching, it definitely fit. I just had to tweak the end into an interesting battle. It's also one of the more gauntlet-ish levels I made. It's so hard to judge difficulty since I know what to do, but I think it's definitely hard, but not too bad.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going to make it through all of the NW levels... it's still fun to try, though
09/20/15, 17:32
@mrbiggsly

Yeah, there's just too darn many levels already. We've pretty much made an entire Mario game within only a week. And half of the levels are extremely hard!

Yeah, I'm slowly following new NW peeps every day. So many levels to play! I'm sure it will slow down eventually.

Until then: I made a Pikmin level!
