Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

@DrFinkelstein

Yeah, we'll need to get a masterlist (not counting names up now..) of who is interested, and then divide the work. I want everyone who WANTS to participate to participate, I don't want anybody going "heyyyyy, I didn't know about it!" So yeah, hopefully everyone speaks up, haha.

And (in my grand vision), I'd like us to have a SMB style "game," and SMB3, and SMW, and NSMB, and whatever else, so if someone wants to pass on the "first" "game," they'd still get to do something a little bit later. I don't know if the "worlds" should have themes or what (maybe World 4 of the SMB3 stages can have all kinds of big enemies again?), though again, I'm WELL behind in the tools available to me (HOPEFULLY TONIGHT), so I don't even know what my options are really.

1-1 simply has to be a Ground level though, no way around that. Tradition! (I'm eager to see SMB-style X-4 levels, and I want to see if they FEEL like they belonged in the game. That is quite impressive to me.)

EDIT- On your guys' "offline" side of things, how do you save your stages? Do you save them in World 1, World 2, etc. for a reason, or just simply plop them wherever? Do you break them up by difficulty? Theme? How many can we make on that side of things? I really gotta start working on FUN stages, and it wouldn't hurt to have a few in my portfolio.

If it has some sort of progression we could try to collaborate as much as possible. So if world 5 is mostly based on vines, the four people making those levels might try to try to play each other's levels to balance out complexity or whatever.

Or we just wing it. I'm all for that, too.

@PogueSquadron

Yeah, I don't even know when we should let it rip. I mean, some people (SMS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING) don't even have it yet.

Okay, I think I've played every level posted in this thread! Lots of good stuff, you guys are head and shoulders above the stuff I've seen in the 100-Mario Challenge. And multiple stages from just about everybody! Now I feel inadequate considering how long I struggled with my lone stage, haha.

Had SO MUCH fun making this one. Meant to mess around with the editor for a few minutes and ended up sitting down for three hours straight:

@Secret_Tunnel
Haha, what a clever stage (and title).

@nate38

Every one? Impressive!

Yeah, I sent our list to some guy who was complaining that he can't find any good levels because I am by far having the most fun with them. He said he was going g to play them on his Twitch stream, so that's cool!

I've run into some decent stuff in 100 Mario Challenge, but we're still better. Bwhaha.

@Hinph
I too have completed every stage offered by the people in here.

Although it seems Ludist's stage has disappeared.

Shoe-nanigans! - 9A66-0000-0053-87D2

Still making wacky levels that are probably just a bit on the hard side, but this one is built all around the use of Kuribo's Shoe. (I promised on the podcast I would overuse the shoe!). Some nice little secrets in here. Would have been a few more, but I actually ran out of the ability to add things!

---

Oh, and count me in for designing a level or two for the SMB project. And, yes, I do think I could build great normal levels if I actually tried.

I think we should name them something like World -1-1, World -1-2, World -1-3, World -1-4, World -2-1, etc.

@kriswright

I haven't picked up the game yet, so I don't know if you can do this or not- But can you design the levels so they run right-to-left instead of the standard left-to-right?

Because if you're going to design a whole 'Negativeworld' game to the point where you name the stages -1, -2, etc....it really should be kinda backwards I think .

Neat idea. Maybe in Super Mario Maker 2. 😒
09/18/15, 07:37
@Shadowlink

The starting point is always at the left side of the map but it doesn't stop you from placing a warp pipe/door that brings you to the right side of the map instead and work it out that way.

@kriswright

If there IS a Super Mario Maker 2, I want a Super Mario 64 toolset.

@Hinph

Oh, man, I played two of your Spiky levels and they were awesome.

@Guillaume

Thanks! Somewhere around that difficulty is where I've been trying to aim lately.

Updated the water stage (little tweaks to be less annoying, plus a new ending) and did a new NSMB castle stage that focuses on little puzzles and the like. I really like the castle stage, I think it's pretty tight.

Looks like I have some catching up to do this weekend. Too many levels!

@Hinph

Great level again. I ran into a small problem near the end though where the moving platform jumps off of the tracks. If you miss it, the only way to get it to respawn is by going into the pipe but if you do so, you immediately get hit by the Chain Chomp. A bit unfair I think!

I've only added a few of you so far but I enjoyed what I played! Now to add the rest.

I've also updated the main document with all three of my uploaded stages. Here's the latest one, "5 Trials of Goomba-Tossing": B197-0000-0048-F3F1

I love throwin' stuff in Mario World, so I made a course around it. This one eases up on the difficulty a bit due to its length.
