Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

You guys make some tough levels...

The very 1st one I made only has a completion rate of about 12%, but people seem to retry it as it's short.
I'm finding it tough to judge the difficulty of my stages - because you end up repeat playing them, they end up way harder than intended.

I think I'm learning though, my 2 stages since have 50% and 60% completion rates, but still have optional challenges for those that are good enough.

Has anyone completed the Super Mario Boy stage? (the one that's designed like super meat boy).

I still can't figure out how the completion and people who played rate works.

So the feet are how many players opened up the course? What do we know about people who quit? Is every single death counted?

K I really suck at saying shit I'm gonna do and then not do it, so I'm gonna rectify that NOW. Gonna play everyone's course I see in the main thread because I'm not sure how the Google thingy works just yet. After playing what this thread has to offer I'll look into the doc better.

Be ready to spammed with carlosrox just played your course! And I dunno how good this idea is but I kinda wanna spam the likes for all the NW stuff just to give it a tad more exposure. There's a lot of crap levels with little thought from what I've seen, and I assume NW will do better. So basically, any level I feel had some effort into it will get a like from me, as to distinguish it from the crap out there. I'm susceptible to having my back scratched too :)

It seems so far the level that's gotten the most play and attention is the FIRST I made on my bro's console...which sucks cuz I'll no longer see comments or any of that from it.. Plus I think my second one is much better.

Anyways time to finally get playing! I'll follow everyone here and hope (expect?) them to do the same for me :) !

PS. Currently working on a Bowser Castle stage I think is quite nice, but I have a tough time planning something for the end fight, mostly because I have no idea how Bowser actually works.

@carlosrox

Cool. Have fun! My hammerbro1 level has 4 hidden item blocks.

@carlosrox

From what I understand, the feet are how many unique players. Then it shows the 35/153 or whatever so your level was completed 35 times. The 153 is how many times your level was played in total, counting repeat players. So the clear % is based off of that and not on the unique players count.

I posted my first level on the weekend, but haven't bothered to post it here yet:

Token SMB1 Level
E14D-0000-0024-9048

Not the most interesting level, nor the most difficult, but there are a couple of easy to find secrets.

I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my second level, but it won't be ready for a day or two.

Haha nice! I really like the spacing of everything. It feels well spaced out for various surprises. Good job with that!

----

One can make a stage where you get 3 1ups right? Is that the only persistent counter in the game, stagewise?

Or am I thinking of 10 Mario challenge? I saw 3 1up icons that reset every stage. So couldn't you make stages where there's a basic 3 1up reward system? Is this old news or am I misinformed?

----

Starting at the beginning of page 15 of the thread (right when the first levels come out)...

...and I feel stupid I have no idea how to get to the secret areas in VoEscaflowne's stage... Also I did the shell puzzle backwards lol..Edit: It's a triple jump isn't it ;) ?

Hinph I just played your first stage! I just got the top way but I'm gonna replay it. Feels pretty good! I like! I broke the mushroom on the first go, as I hit out from the wrong side, though it's still pretty easily catchable if you don't mind dodging fire and risking the first jump again.

@carlosrox

The 3 1up thing is for the challenges. Upon completing a stage that has 1ups, you're given up to 3 extra lives to your total if you've lost any.

And as for my secret, assuming you're talking about the "Boing Boing!" level, none of them require triple jumping anyway. Just speed!

No, your first stage. Oh I thought you said Koopa Trail was your first stage. Discovery was nice as the level suited the name lol.

@carlosrox

Koopa Trail was the first I finished but Discovery was the first submitted haha. Servers weren't online then!

Fuck. I haven't even gotten to much of the heavily experimental stuff I'm sure is possible with Mario Maker. That's awesome.
09/15/15, 05:12
I want that Smash stage SOOOO much! Not only because it's awesome, but Smash U's stages are severely lacking in the not-moving-all-over-the-place-or-scrolling-stages-that-aren't-flat-either department!

Bowser's New Security System - D3C8-0000-003A-A549

I think this one turned out pretty good. Feels like about a 6-4 or a 7-4, to me. A couple of neat effects I'm a little proud for discovering.

I finally got my copy of Super Mario Maker in the mail today!

IT IS SO GOOD!!!

I posted a course, it's not much, just a first attempt with the assets available from the first software launch.
This is quite the game. Or at least it must be, because my wife, who hates video games, bugged me the entire time that I was creating a stage that she wanted to make a stage too.

Oh Nintendo, thy magiks are powerful indeed.

@nate38

How will I find time to play that stage while I'm making stages!!!
09/15/15, 05:55
Yeah this game is crazy. Truly something special.
