Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..). For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures. Next up.. Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!) Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours. See ya soon!! CHRONO TRIGGER

"This is Leene's Bell. People say that whoever hears the Bell ring will lead interesting and happy lives."
And so it begins. Crono is awoken by the sound of the bell (and his mother's voice!). Let us dive into an amazing adventure.
WEEK 1 We'll start off with week 1 being fairly simple. This is the first time I've DM'd anything, so bear with me. Let me know if the pace is too much, or too little. Here we go!
Let's begin with:
Main Objectives 1.) Get Crono to the Millennial Fair. 2.) Meet Marle 3.) View Lucca's unveiling of her newest invention. 4.) Find Marle 5.) Meet Frog 6.) Rescue the Queen 7.) Return to 1000A.D.
Side objectives: a.) Visit the Mayor's Manor. Get the Tonic from the Treasure Chest, and talk to the old man on the upper floor for some extra $$$. b.) Earn enough money to buy the Lode (Silver) Sword from Melchior at the Millennial Fair before meeting Marle. c.) Win the Crono Doll from Norstein Bekkler’s Lab at the Millennial Fair before viewing Lucca's invention.
Things are fairly straight-forward in the beginning, so I feel like there shouldn't be too much hand-holding from the DM (er, me). Hopefully the week's goals are easy enough, but lengthy enough to take up a week's time.
Enjoy, and as always, suggestions, questions, concerns and advice are most welcome. Cheers! |

GameDadGrant said: And yeah @Dark Weres, you can earn a good amount of XP and $$$ by going to the forest to grind. It kinda makes Crono over-powered for the first bit of the game...but that's not necessarily a bad thing!
If you wanna talk about overpowered, I'm playing this on a New Game + to try and get a particular ending I always seem to miss, before resuming and completing the game normally with everyone else. Watching some of my friends play through old games like this, and seeing them "know everything", and by that I mean completely forget to talk to conspicuous NPC #3 who opens the way forward, in every single scene, and getting stuck for several hours wondering what to do, makes me happy to be forgetful. I tend to talk to everyone in these old games, just in case one of them says something interesting/important, even if I'm replaying the game and have practically memorized what they say, just in case I forgot something or remembered it wrong. It probably also helps that I'm a fast reader, so I don't bore myself in talking to everyone. It probably also-also helps that I try to make my games last as long as possible, delaying the ending and squeezing as much time out of them while I play as possible, too. Are you going to be branching the play for the various ways people can get those endings? Or are you just going to go for one of the ones you're expected to get on your first play? Anyways, week 1 complete for me. Took a bit longer than I expected due to Norstein Bekkler's minigames being tougher than I remember, and because I wanted to try and win each of them at least once. Maybe once more once I get back. I enjoy the 80-point minigame quite a lot. @Mr_MustacheNethack has a funny little item they refer to as a lodestone. It appears as a featureless gray rock when unidentified. If you pick it up, it curses itself (meaning you can't drop or throw it without uncursing it first somehow), and adds 500 weight to your inventory, leading to a wealth of complications. I thought it was a clever idea on the creators' part to abuse that name. A lodestone can be used as a valuable sling projectile if you have a reliable method of uncursing it while it's in your possession. It won't re-curse itself until you pick it up from the ground again. |
