Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

We definitely need a negative world contest [at least 9 days after] when this game comes out! I'm sure we can get some really great levels and it'd be a good way to get some fellow followers!

@Cubed777

So in on this.

Brilliance!

Heh. Pretty funny. That didn't even sound like it came out of his mouth at all. The guy didn't even kinda smile a little bit through that whole thing, what the hell.

They should allow voice clips online but somehow they would need to control it. There's a ton of potential with it.

We can still share these with friends though? Cuz voice clips just for yourself would be entirely useless.

Oh. The voice thing sells it for me now. Hilarious.

Hah. I think it's kind of funny that this is the feature to finally push you into picking it up, but I think you are making a good call!

Okay, so I have decided that a Super Mario Bros 2 theme absolutely needs to be a thing at some point, and I retract my previous statement about the gameplay elements possibly being too different and necessitating a stand-alone level maker. No, not at all. Observe!

They have already added the SMB2 elements back into a main entry style SMB game, and they work brilliantly! It's just that nobody ever played this content because it was only on that gimmicky failure eReader nonsense. It's not even that hard to imagine them bringing back the ability to play as Luigi, Peach, and Toad with a hybrid moveset at some point, and how amazing would that be?

I thought that watching this video was also really cool to think about other cool things that could be potentially added into SMM (or SMM2) at some point. Infinite potential!

Not sure if I should get excited but Amazon is already preparing my order. Delivery date is still the same though... still, kinda hoping that it gets here early!

I have it preloaded and I keep trying in vain to start the game

Commercial is quite well done. Hopefully there are others showing off some better level footage and stressing how fun and easy it is to share levels online, but this gets the point across.

Never give up! Trust your instincts!

I'm totally selling Wii U's and a buncha games lately. Awesome. It's absolutely my pleasure to spread the joy that Nintendo games can bring.

I should be a Nintendo salesman. Go door to door and do God's work.

Edit: That kid I got to buy a Wii U with Splatoon is soon getting Smash, and the above video along with other stuff I've mentioned have him really interested in Mario Maker.

@Hinph

I saw that same commercial on TV the other day. I think it perfectly gets across what the game is all about and its done in a slick way. I actually have some buddies at work that are considering getting a WiiU after seeing it. This game has the potential of being a system seller! Let's hope they market the hello out of it!

@carlosrox

Bless you my son. Now go forth and spread the good word!

Seems like a review embargo just lifted. No surprise to anyone it is reviewing very well. At around 90% on GR after close to 30 reviews.

Yeah, I don't feel like any of the complaints about the game are really a big deal... and all stuff we already knew about. Hopefully Nintendo continues to support it with content and tweaks. I am so down for DLC here.

I know this will be a 10 for me. It's actually kind of scary how many hours I'm going to pour into it.

I love the time leading up to release, my hype builds steadily and release date is something special.
09/02/15, 21:03
I'm pretty excited to see what people do and myself even.

I think I might be interested in handling a Super Mario Maker Level Design Competition. Would you all be interested in that? I could potentially have prizes for people too.
09/02/15, 23:57
I saw in IGN's review that you can't even filter the levels by what your friends have published. If that's the case, that's pretty lame. Why does Nintendo not think of these things beforehand? And will they even bother patching it in later? The only way we can share with friends now is by manually having them enter the level code which is pretty tedious if we start sharing them in this thread.

Can Nintendo just hire me to consult on user-friendly design experiences?

CAUSE I DID SO WELL HERE AMIRITE?!
