Super Mario Maker Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Super Mario Maker on the Wii U
9.1/10 from 22 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I think this might be my first retail Wii U game I get digitally. You can even get the 100-page booklet for free if you send the right info to Nintendo!

Only 1.5 GB? Now I won't have to get up when I want to switch from Splatoon to Mario Maker

@TriforceBun Yeah, I think this will be my first digital retail game as well. The size is right, and it's unlikely I'll find a good sale on the disc before launch. (I also have Game & Wario downloaded, but that was free from Club Nintendo.)

I'm a bit bummed that the rating system seems to be as simple as "give a star or... don't." I was hoping we could collectively weed out truly worthless levels with at least a 1-5 star scale or an upvote/downvote system. I've already seen some real terrible designs or non-efforts whose creators deserve more of a slap to the head than me not giving them a star for even uploading such garbage and wasting people's time. I'm not asking that people be brilliant, just that they actually try before hitting the submit button.

Of course, people on the internet are jerks and will often do things like not using all of the numbers in a rating scale or downvoting things for no actual reason...

Haha, you're having fun with that thing. I like your drawing of Cupil.

I was pretty sure I killed this thread with those antics, so I'm glad. Hah.

I may pass on this game. Price point is too high for what it is.

Just my opinion, though.

Just means we have to be quite stingy in giving out stars I guess.

Oh shit yeah. I might have space for this on my system, though that'll pretty much cap it. Damnit! Sure hope NX has a large HD.

@Hinph
Oh that's a bit disappointing. I'm guessing you'll need a lot of stars to get on the highest rated section though.

@TriforceBun
Smash was a great choice for digital download :)

I hope that the game doesn't tell you WHO gives you a star. LittleBigPlanet had this system where you gave levels a "Heart" and not too long after, a huge spam of levels came out which were "H4H," or Heart For Heart where if someone gave you that Heart, they'd return the favor despite the level's actual quality. It certainly didn't help that some trophies were tied to how many of these Hearts your levels received.

You indeed CAN change the Wii U system clock to unlock things faster.

And everyone and their grandmama knowing about this exploit won't alert Nintendo and prompt them to change it?

Eh, I won't be doing that shit. I'll try how Nintendo intends me to play this game.

@carlosrox

It's not really new since people do it in Animal Crossing. Plus it's 9 days worth of content... it's not like it'll ruin the game in any way if you choose to play it the was it was intended to be played.

Pfft, you guys and having this game be your first retail digital download.

ALL MY GAMES ARE DIGITALLY DOWNLOADED! IT'S THE WAY OF THE FUTURE!

The disc comes in a special box, it'll look nice on my shelf. Plus I don't really have any space left on the internal memory anyway, too many Club Nintendo freebies. I actually had to delete a game or two, all filled up!

I won't be doing the time exploit either; as I said before, 9 days is insignificant. The first day will feel too limited since I can't even use the Fire Flower, but after that, I'll be fine, as I plan to make some SMB1-style levels anyway. And there are those challenges to play.

I trust there's a method to Nintendo's madness and that restricting tools for a few days will encourage practice and learning with what you have. I will admit the very first set of tools feels a little TOO basic, but the next day I'll already have more to play with.

It's kinda pissing on Nintendo's vision. It woulda been fun to see what the community made the first day, first few days, etc, with limited tools. Now with tons running this exploit we're gonna see a bunch of stupid shit on the first day.

It's really not a big deal either way but I don't see why people can't just wait the damn time out.
08/20/15, 23:38
@carlosrox It's at least nice to have the option to fast-forward in case you get a new Wii U and lose your save data, or take the game to a friend's place and want to show off, etc.

I think it's kind of dumb that they're limiting the tools right away, but it's not a huge deal for me personally.

I totally understand the item limiting as a method of helping people slowly learn all the tools and becoming stronger designers, but I might go ahead and time travel. This isn't my first time making Mario levels, and I already know what all of these items do from obsessively playing these games my whole life and watching so many videos of SMM (Sexy Masochist Mules), so I won't be overwhelmed.

Yeah, it isn't an ideal system, but it's better than nothing. Hopefully Nintendo will patch in another method if it doesn't work out so well.

Also, at least we can still add really talented designers to our favorite users lists and easily share levels with each other. I know everybody on my friend's list will at least try to make good levels and not just upload their experimental, unfinished crap. It should be fun giving each other feedback!

What a cool idea! It's a real shame that the time limit can't be turned off for stuff like this.
08/21/15, 02:31
@Hinph
That's neat! But it's discouraging to see that preview builds are already using up some of my Mario Maker ideas... :( I really wanted to do a Metroid one (albeit more of a Brinstar remake than this original, Metroid-Inspired design).

Really cool level that Metroid one is, but it definitely needs some editing. Really good for what I would assume would be a first draft. I mean, considering there is a timer I think maybe some of the fat could be trimmed? Without a timer you could see some truly amazing stuff.

I'm definitely gonna try and make some innovative and well designed levels. Can't wait. And can't wait to try others.

I imagine there will be a lot of re-creating of other games, that appears to be a popular thing to do with Mario level makers.
