What do you want to see from Nintendo's mobile games? (New details inside) [roundtable]

The CEO of DeNA, Nintendo's partner in their new mobile gaming venture, recently explained that the partnership will initially result in five games across different genres:

Shintaro Asako said:
"I understand some people like RPGs, casual games. That's why we decided to work together to create five games, hitting on different genre-utilizing IPs".

The first game will be released before the end of 2015, with the additional four games scheduled to hit prior to March, 2017.

Are you planning to pick up some or all of these games? What IPs would you like to see used? What genres are you most interested in? If you were to get these games, what device would you play them on?

It's funny, but it kind of resembles the situation before the NES. The consoles before it were flooded mostly with a bunch of crapware and consumers had no way of knowing how to find the good content. Google and Apple had a chance to play the role of Nintendo in the 80's and limit the game sections of their digital stores to software that meets quality standards, but their hearts aren't really in videogames... they are just other "apps" to those companies, and as long as they are getting their cut, why should they care?

Nintendo obviously doesn't have the manufacturer privilege this time around, but they already have their IP and reputation to put them in a perpetual spotlight. Even right now there are people ignorant of the industry happenings typing "Mario" into the App and Play Store and scratching their heads at the fact that nothing is coming up.

I don't play mobile games much myself, despite having a phone that can play them well. I consider mobile games time-wasters. Games one plays when waiting for something, not games one would choose to play for sheer fun/enjoyment.

However, the games I have downloaded and play when I'm not looking for a full on gaming experience, I really like. They're good quality and prove their worth. In thinking of these games, I can imagine some Nintendo could do well in creating...

> Luigi's Mansion - a first person puzzle/point-and-click adventure (like a Mansion of Hidden Souls and The Room combo)
> Club House Games - more games than the original, and with real-time online or local play
> Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - in the likeness of Monument Valley
> Yoshi's Touch n' Go - a sequel to the DS version
> Kirby - something similar to Microtrip could be fun
> Nintendogs/cats - just as Hinph noted, this would be the perfect fit for mobile
> Pokemon - maybe some kind of tamagotchi like game, where you can level up your Pokemon and such to transfer to a console version
> Animal Crossing - something like Wii U's Plaza, where you could have a nifty place to interact with your friends and family, posting quizes/questions/polls and such

That's all I've got. They definitely need a killer puzzle game. I'm just not sure what kind.

I don't like mobile stuff and don't own a mobile device. That said, I think a good bet would be putting some of their existing (mobile-friendly) games up for sale. Picoss, Yoshi's Touch n' Go and some of the Super Mario 64 DS mini games would be solid choices. Plus I won't feel alienated that I can't buy them since I can get them elsewhere.

@Zero

Hey, what makes something a "roundtable"? Aren't most message board threads open for discussion pretty much?

@Hinph

This is why it's so important for them to lean into original content that is easy to control with touch and tilt. A lazy version of Nintendo could get away with dropping some arcade-perfect Donkey Kong games and such with virtual controls and sell gangbusters out of the gate. Heck, I'd buy DK mobile. But confidence would quickly erode if they relied too heavily on that market plan. Now of course Nintendo isn't lazy, so I expect some great, original material from them. But it's also important to remember that they're roughly 5 years late to the mobile party, barring perhaps that Pokemon Pocket experiment.

Point is that this development environment is completely new for them. They've got the smarts and I'll bet money that they'll find true success on mobile, both critical and commercial. But they're not going to do it by simply shifting console and handheld design philosophy over to mobile. They're going to need to think bigger than that. I'll fully confident they will.

@NoName

Kind of splitting hairs, but I'd qualify "time-waster" games as legitimate games. And that's completely agreeing that they're best served as time-wasters. A quick, shot-in-the-arm game session that serves as a distraction while waiting in line or on the bus is still a game session by definition. Esp. when you're looking at quality design. For example, Skiing Yeti Mountain is 100% hitting my 2015 GOTY Top 10. And it looks like the brilliantly deep 2D Kerbal Space Program-inspired SimpleRockets is on deck to do the same.

You know what I want on mobile platforms?
Donkey Kongs Crash Course.
Would work perfectly and could easily fit into a freemium model.

Good call. It's also very good.

Are you planning to pick up some or all of these games?
Probably not. My iPhone 4 is showing its age and I simply never, ever play games on it. It's just not something I do. If I've got time to waste, I go on twitter.

What IPs would you like to see used?
I was thinking that if Pikmin has any future, that future will probably go through mobile. It's hard to imagine a Pikmin 4 or even a Pikmin 1&2 HD collection at this point. Pikmin 3 has simply bombed too hard. Might be unfair to judge its sales this way since it's on a very unpopular console, but I think Nintendo sees no reason to keep going looking at the sales numbers.

I don't know what a well done mobile Pikmin would look like, but it might be the only way to save the series.

@TriforceBun Kind of. I always thought of a roundtable as the type of single topic discussion which naturally lends itself to a variety of opposing opinions and we go back and forth on those opinions.

Which is not that different from a lot of regular discussions aside from being public, I suppose. But for instance Guillaume's post on Project H.A.M.M.E.R. wouldn't really be roundtable material because it was more informative. Unless he could think of a specific topic surrounding it we could all butt heads on.

Of course we have had a lot of roundtables that ask a question but that don't lead to arguing various positions so much. Like which character do you play as type questions. Those are ok too. So... yeah it's up to whoever is making the roundtable I guess.

Yeah, roundtables, to me, are meant to encourage debate or discussion. As opposed to an opinion thread by the OP.

Maybe there's not too much of a difference sometimes. But at least the INTENT is more clear.

Yeah, I always thought they were more like "official" debate threads on the topic. Sort of a reminder to be on your best behavior.
