Breath of Fire II Discussion (Nintendo SNES) [game]

Breath of Fire II on the SNES
8.15/10 from 4 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Breath of Fire II on the SNES!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Paling in comparison to other turn-based games of the 16-bit era like Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series, Breath of Fire seemed to duck below the waterline and go unseen by many a player. Was there another reason that you didn't get to play this game, or was it one that you enjoyed a great deal? If so, who was your favorite character?

We've completed the course for Breath of Fire II as our fifth official Epic Center game; Paper Mario is next. You'll notice our "leaderboards" below which were tracking the progress of the participants. If you missed the EC run, and you'd like to play on your own as if it were being done LIVE! for you, simply click on WEEK 1, WEEK 2, etc. and follow along that way. This, of course, is also the destination for the continuation of Breath of FIre II in the Epic Center, for those who did not finish..like everyone.

Breath of Fire II was a perennial rental on SNES for me, and after describing the gameplay and music to a friend at bowling, he remarked "oh, I have that game!" And he sold it to me shortly after. AWESOME. Like a few games in my videogame history (ie: Mega Man), I took in the sequel before the prequel, and after going back..boy am I glad I did.

Breath of Fire II, to me, is a solid game on its own feet and you don't need to experience Breath of Fire (1) if you wish not to. You won't be lost at all with this game, and a lot of the things in the first game evaporate for this game. You will, however, still take in plenty of turn-based combat, fun and colorful characters, some sweet side stuff (fishing and hunting, huzzah!), and more.

I am underway. Definitely off to a more interesting start than its predecessor. Considering the original just got better as it went along, that spells good things for this one. Already some funny moments, as well. I love the animation of Bow hiding in the trash. Definitely gave me a chuckle.

One small concern is that the battle animations seem to be just a tad bit slower than you'd hope. That can really add up when the random battles are frequent. They seem to be about standard level of frequency for a 16 bit RPG, which is too many but not as bad as some older games. The battle music also doesn't seem to be anything to write home about unfortunately. Ah well, they can't all be Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest levels of good.

I'm completely lost as to fishing. I tried reading a guide online and I'm still lost. But I did get the hint that I shouldn't bother until I get a better rod so I will put that on the back burner for now. I'm assuming I'll get some travel options down the line that will let me go back to the fishing spots I skip anyway.

Is the first town really just named HomeTown or did I miss an opportunity to name it?

I'm stumbling back through this off and on...but I may hold off on finishing this one for Backlaugust (details coming soon).

@Jargon

I think it's always called HomeTown.

Eh, I dunno, you can get some really good fishing done early with that Pole available at the 1st store. I like to cast JUST off the rock, that way you only gotta pull your fish like 1 inch. The two types of fish in that spot only eat worms. Don't bother with the other lures.

@Mr_Mustache

Ah, that explains why no one was biting with the "better" bait. What about the chests, though? Any point trying to get those with the early pole?

@Jargon

Some you can get, but probably not. I think the best Pole you can have now is like 270z? I can't remember, sorry. It'll be a bit before you get a better one. If you're following along with the Epic Center stuff (at all), I'm pretty explicit about it up there. Fishing is a HUGE part of the game for me. HUGE. You get like 1 gold off a slime, or 15 (or is it 30?) gold off a tiny fish. (Red Snappers are like 2000 golde once you hit those, and those also eat worms.)

So really, what makes more sense to pursue? If there was fishing in Dragon Warrior, I can tell you that game would've moved about 6 hours quicker, haha!!

Ugh seems I made a mistake in giving Renew to Bow. I see from the Epic Center stuff that he will get it anyway down the road. And of course I saved my game so there's no going back well. I should have gone with my instinct and given it to myself, like how I always exclusively boost my own stats with in Dragon Quest games when you find those items. Oh well, I assume it won't be a killer.

I must say this game isn't hooking me so far. I think maybe I wasn't as ready for a new JRPG as I thought. But also, I've just had very little enthusiasm/energy for gaming, in general. Just one of those natural ebbs, I suppose. Blah. Point being, I don't think it's the game's fault.

@Jargon

Did I say who I gave it to? I feel like Nina always got it. Did she earn it on her own? I don't recall.

What have you liked MOST so far about the game, either thematically or otherwise? Cool bosses? Neat music?

@Mr_Mustache

I dig the game's sense of humor. Like I said before Bow hiding in the trash was worth a good chuckle.

@Jargon

I always laughed at the part when you inspect his bed, and it says "It's wet." I guess that isn't very funny, but as a kid it was all "haha, Bow pees the bed."

--Did you ever polish this off? I still have to, myself..
08/19/15, 15:26
@Mr_Mustache

No, I just wasn't ready for a JRPG again after my big run on them earlier this year. I will get back to it someday.

@Jargon

I wonder why this game is so tough to put away. Weird.
