First impressions:
I've beaten stages 1-1 through 1-7, and so far I am very impressed with Yoshi's Woolly World. Very.
You've all seen the screenshots and the artworks, and some of you are familiar with Kirby's Epic Yarn, but you guys have no friggin' idea how friggin' charming every little goddamn thing is about this game. The seagulls in the distant skies are just little bows of white yarn, the notes floating by during the soundtest are shyguys with vacant stares, and the crabs on the beach are motherflippin' coin purses!!! They even open up and reach into their purse body to grab themselves a bigger claw when Yoshi comes near!
Can't say much about the graphics other than that they're pretty much perfection. I don't think there's a whole lot of room for improvement within this concept. It's just gorgeous, pure and simple. The soundtrack is also very good so far. Sort of like a mix of Yoshi's Island and Kirby's Epic Yarn, just like the game itself. The song from the Treehouse Live video I freaked out about earlier is playing on Knitty-Knotty Windmill Hill, and it's a beautiful track. Starts off like this bouncy little tune with some merry synthesizer bleeps, and then blooms into a lovely harmony with slide guitar and piano. That's going to be a track I remember fondly for quite some time.
The controls feel exactly like they should, and as one should expect. I've only played with the GamePad so far, but it's worked great. Pure Nintendo quality. Something that's also of Nintendo quality are the stages. First one is kind of simplistic (as an introductory stage should be, IMO) and ultimately nothing special. The second one, Bounceabout Woods, is where things start getting really good. All sorts of platforming shenanigans start developing there, and at one point you can even turn into an umbrella to float on updrafts through hollow treetrunks. It's a really simple mechanic, where you just steer left or right, and press a button to open your umbrella and ascend on the updrafts, but it's really fun and provides some extra variety to the stage. The variety between the different stages is good too; after Bounceabout Woods you get to explore a fluffy little cave system full of hungry Nippers and soft rocks made of sponge that you can create paths through. No chance of getting bored as far as I can tell. If anything I had a hard time putting the controller down.
As expected, the game has been really easy so far. It's to be expected since I haven't left the first world yet, but still has to be mentioned. It should be noted that the difficulty has been a bit more along the lines of, say, New Super Mario Bros. U than Kirby's Epic Yarn though. I have found myself jumping down endless pits on a couple of occasions already, trying to avoid Piranha Plants emerging from pipes and trying to reach shiny pickups. Speaking of pickups, there seems to be a lot of goodies to hunt down in the levels. Five flowers, five wonder wools that unlock new Yoshis, and 20 Miiverse Stamp Patches, and not a whole lot of it is in plain sight. In fact, I still haven't found all the flowers on the very first stage, even though I tried to be thorough. For someone like me, this is a very good sign going forward. |
