Earthbound Beginnings (Mother) Review (Nintendo NES) (8.0)  by

Finally, Mother 1 is released in North America.

I'm guessing most of us have never played this game before, but for those who have: any beginner's advice? For example, I'd tell someone playing Earthbound on SNES for the first time to keep the characters' default names. Are there any weird little tidbits we should know going into this one?

From what I hear, it's kinda like SNES Earthbound but not as good... but should still be worth playing! Personally, I'm really relieved that Nintendo localized this one before Mother 3, despite the demand being for Mother 3 first. Gotta play the first game before the third one!

This about sums things up.

Ha! One crow stole both of my orange juices in the same battle. In about that exact same spot.

Are you guys already cruisin' through this? Probably would've made a good Epic Center entry. Ah well.

@Mr_Mustache
It probably still would--everyone's right at the beginning it seems.

That said, if you disliked EarthBound, I don't think I'd recommend this. It's pretty much EB with NES tech and limitations. Such as...

@Guillaume
Yeah, Ninten's a little "sticky"-feeling. It doesn't really mess with anything since it's an RPG, but it's a weird quirk.
06/15/15, 18:21
@Guillaume I started playing in my bedroom where I usually can't even get a signal so I just assumed it was a signal issue. Man, that's just how he moves? Ug.

I also named the main characters Andrew and Shirley just to instantly find out they are brother and sister. AWKWARD.

@Zero
Haha, if you mean Ninten and Ana, they're not related. You might be confusing one of Ninten's sisters with her?
06/15/15, 18:37
@r_hjort Oh that sister doesn't join your party? I only played for a few minutes ha ha.

Nah, so all your naughty little fan fic fantasies remain incest free!

I echo the statements about this game being very grindy. If you've played the original Dragon Warrior then you know what you're in for, though I actually felt like this game was even more brutal than other NES RPGs. Which is a shame, because anyone with a lot of patience will be rewarded with a charming world and endearing story, as well as a pretty incredible soundtrack. Definitely one of the best on NES, and the first overworld theme is a contender for my fave of all time. Though, being an NES game, the text is simplistic as well. Still, I don't think I can recommend it to anyone other than either fans of old-school RPGs, or those who played Earthbound and are curious about this one. It does share some similarities with EB as well, so it won't be wholly fresh.

When playing through Final Fantasy VII recently I sat and complained about this and that -- "Dang materia system...*grumble* I swear, these summon animations... *moan* I miss Relm and Edgar....*whine*" -- but now that I play through this sluggishly controlled, 8-bit grindfest for the third or so time, I'm smiling ear to ear. Mother is special.

I played a few minutes of this on an emulator years ago and remember being really unimpressed despite loving Earthbound. Maybe I'll change my opinion when I get a chance to play it for real, but if not, I have no problem dropping $7 to show my support for the series.

I played some of it on an emulator too many years ago. That was a finished but unreleased Western translation, right? And this is probably the same thing, but maybe with Treehouse checking it out for minor tweaks and polishes first.

@Infinitywave

Yeah I have played the original ROM that was dumped way back and it seemed finished. Maybe some background things that I wouldn't be aware of. If they had to do any additional programming I would be shocked.

Not to get all Grant on you guys ( ), but not sure why they couldn't have thrown this on 3DS as well. I like to play these grindy RPGs in bed.

@Jargon
I said that to my wife yesterday.
As it is, I have to drag my Wii U upstairs with me at night. It's not a HUGE deal, but the 3DS would make it much, much easier.

I found Pippi and got her home (and got the Franklin Badge) and solved the mystery at the zoo. Now I think I'm supposed to go to the Canary Village...

@Jargon
This is something I feel Nintendo could really learn from Sony, having more cross-platform purchasing for these old school titles. Big reason I'm still hoping the NX would be a merger of portable and home console systems so I can play the game on the TV at home while being able to take them on the go.

I AM playing in bed. You need to move your sensor closer to bed.

Anyway, so the grinding... I assume this starts right away? I did some grinding, all the way up at level 7 already, graveyard is still destroying me.
06/17/15, 17:06
I made it to Magicent last night. Yay! This game is really fun.

@Zero

I think I was level 8 (with the Wooden Bat) when I finally finished it.
06/17/15, 17:10
@Zero
At the beginning, I recommend you grind your way to a better weapon first and foremost. Spend the 500 bucks on the Wooden Bat from the department store if you haven't done so already. With that you should be able to whack most zombies at the graveyard before they wear you out, but bring some french fries to keep you going.
06/17/15, 17:11
Ah ok I thought about that bat but I pushed forward without it anyway. Guess that is the next goal.
