So I got the Steam version of this game in some bundle and deciding I was in the mood for some classic point and click adventure I fired it up. Funnily enough, I had this game mixed up with the Longest Journey for some reason, so I thought I was in store for what people really consider a masterpiece. I realized my mistake after a few hours of playing and, by that point, it had been apparent.

That's not to say the game is bad though. It is from that era of adventure gaming through and through and I do enjoy that for what it is. I'm 60% through according to my save file and I will definitely see it through to the end. The voice acting can be quite painful, but that's kind of part of the charm for me. Most of the puzzles have been pretty simple, with only one nonsensical head scratchers that typically come with the territory so far. Also, I'm a sucker for its genre of story, full of intrigue and historical mysteries. So yea, not a bad use of my time at all.

I will have to seek out the actual Longest Journey some time, but I'm not regretting spending the dollar I spent for this and one of its sequels (plus some other stuff). We'll see if I ever get around to that one.

Beat the game. Ending was kind of abrupt and maybe it was an error but there was no end credits. Still, I enjoyed playing through it.

I found out that it's made by the same developer as Beneath a Steel Sky, another classic point and click game that's free on Good Old Game. It's been a long time, but I think this game doesn't quite live up to BaSS. Worth playing if you like this genre, though, for sure.

I got the sequel as well as part of the same bundle and I think I will give it a go eventually. Not right away, I have my next game picked out already, a certain classic CRPG.

I played this game a while back on the Wii with my sister. It definitely seemed less obtuse than the old PC point 'n clicks, but there are still a few random solutions where I don't see any logic (I guess there may be some for people well-trained in this level of obscurity), so we used an FAQ a few times because who has time for that nonsense? In any case, I don't remember too much at this point, but I remember thinking the story seemed decent, however I felt like George didn't have enough motivation to run around solving all this. He was just a tourist so why was he so interested in figuring out these mysteries? And where did he get the money to travel to all these countries (yet didn't have $50 for a cab ride)? I felt like they could have done more development on him to show the why, though I guess it could have just been as simple as wanting to get the girl, though most of that seemed to develop towards the end I think.

This Director's Cut version also made things a little less consistent. For example, it was obvious which scenes were added to this version, because the sound quality of the voices were much better in some scenes. Most of these seemed to be at the start, so it was a bit jarring for the voices to suddenly take a turn for the worse. We also found it funny how exaggerated some of the accents were, whether that was intentional or not. There were credits on the Wii version, so I don't know why there weren't on the PC version.

@Mop it up

Haha, yea. I had pretty much all the same thoughts, especially the one about having all that money to fly around and travel around the city and then not having $50. George definitely could have had more motivation.

Did the Wii have a hint system? The Steam version did. I used it a couple of times and it was nice because there were different levels of hints you could get and the first one only gave you a slight nudge. I never had to outright look up the solution. I'm definitely well trained in these, but like I said, nonsensical puzzles come with the territory and there were a couple.

The voice acting was pretty hilariously bad, particularly some of the accents. The Spanish gardener guy sounded like he was doing a bad Mexican accent. But again, that comes with the territory and I actually find it kind of charming. Plus it was easy to skip the spoken dialogue and just read, which is what I usually did.

Must have been a bug with the PC version or something. There were a couple of other parts where I thought something might be missing and I didn't notice any change in voice quality so maybe I was missing some scenes or something. Oh well, it didn't really hurt my experience.

Yeah, there's a hint system in the Wii game. At first we didn't want to use it, in case anything special happened from having 0 hints recorded on the file, but then I accidentally clicked it once and that was the end of that. We tried the hints a few times, the first one was usually pretty vague, and then I think there was a timer before you could get the next one. There were a couple of times where we had tried what the hint said, but just not in the precise order it was supposed to be done in, that the hint didn't mention either.

My sister wasn't particularly interested in the gameplay which is why we wouldn't take too long trying to figure things out before getting help. If I were playing by myself then I would have took longer to solve things before looking it up, though I may have still needed it a couple of times.

Looks like the Steam version was released over a year after the Wii version, so maybe they edited the game some more and cleaned up the voices.
