Neat! Apparently it hits in February in Japan, with no US confirmation yet. But I'd say we have a good chance of getting it here.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Isn't this generally considered one of the better DQ games? I vaguely remember hearing that somewhere.

@Zero

If by one of the better ones, you mean "one of the most bloating DQ games", then yes!

Fans of not getting out of the first town and not getting to the first battle before hour 5 will be in heaven!

...I really, really hope they update more than just the graphics, and "fix" this game.

I'm with Guillaume here. DQ7 is probably my least favorite of the whole series. It's "fine"... I mean, the worst DQ game is still better than a lot of games, but, yea... definitely the black sheep in my mind. I'll be interested to see what they do with the remake, but I can't imagine what would make me want to own it a second time =\

Hmm, well it was a PS1 RPG, those often took a lot of steps backwards from SNES RPGs but still got a ton of praise. Perhaps they will streamline it a bit for the handheld.

There is also the fact that I could be confusing things. Does this game get a lot of praise?! Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I know VIII gets a ton of praise.

I feel like it takes forever to get around in a typical Dragon Quest title, anyway. So, since it is now portable and you can save anywhere, that sort of fixes a problem of sitting for hours in front of a TV screen, amirite? RPGs are best experienced on handhelds.

Cool! I've never played this game, so I'm totally on board for a localization for this one. I can't imagine that NOT happening - I mean, North America even got DragonQuest Monsters: Joker 2 for crying out loud.

This man speaks the truth.

That reminds me that I still need to finish IX someday.

@Deerock69

Agreed.

This is a huge get for the 3DS! Buuuut I don't really care.

On the other hand, a third 7th Dragon (spiritual successor to Etrian Odyssey) game is apparently getting made. That might hit the 3DS and may come here. But probably not.

@GameDadGrant
I just picked up Joker 2 for a fin! It shall be in the load-bearing section of my wall o' DS games.

@Anand

Nice! I was one of those suckers that went out an got Joker 2 at launch. Pretty good game! Though, like most of the games in my collection, it remains unfinished.

I personally think the criticisms and the praise are equally deserved. The first two hours or so are pure Hell. Almost worst than the first half hour of Final Fantasy X-2. But if you can get past it, and like your JRPGs really long and grindy (and let's be honest...you're playing a Dragon Quest game), it's pretty good. I'll probably repurchase it if given a chance.

This is the only mainline Dragon Quest game that I don't have, so I hope this comes here as I don't fancy paying the PS1 prices.

@Zero You're probably thinking of DQVIII, which is the second-most popular game in the series (behind IX). In my experience, people seem to consider DQVII one of the worst, but I'd still like to try it meself someday.

@GameDadGrant But we didn't get the Professional version of it, nor have we gotten DQH: Rocket Slime 3 or DQM: Terry's Wonderland. So we're certainly not guaranteed to get this game, however it has the benefit of being a part of the mainline series, and I'm pretty sure DQVI sold a lot better than DQMJ2.

@Mop it up

Oh! I didn't even know those games existed! Terry's Wonderland, huh? Weird, I'll have to look these up. Did we get DragonQuest Heroes: Rocket Slime 2? I don't remember.

.... and with that, I'm off to do some research!

EDIT: *comes back from doing research*

Huh, so it appears that Rocket Slime on DS is actually the sequel to a Gameboy Advance game that was released only in Japan. So we did get the sequel, but not the sequel to the sequel. Not sure why it wasn't released...I thought maybe because they thought it wouldn't sell well in the West so late in 2011 (and with the 3DS looming). Maybe that's true?

Terry's Wonderland on 3DS is actually a remake of DragonQuest Monsters on Gameboy Color, so I'm kind of not surprised that there was no localization for that. At least not yet. It was released in Japan during May of this year, so a (late) localization isn't completely out of the question. (though not likely, IMO) If anything, I'd imagine the GBC original showing up on the VC before the 3DS remake.

Before 3ds launched, I predicted that dq8 will be ported to 3ds, so far it looks like my prediction is on track to come true.

Now DQ8 is coming to Japan. Sigh.

Sad. Would it really cost so much to translate it? Hell, fan communities seem to do that sort of thing just out of love. Then whenever they actually release a game like this in North America, it seems to sell well enough to justify the localization. DQIX didn't do terrible here. Publishers have such lofty expectations these days.

If you search back years into my posts. You will see I said somewhere when 3DS launched that DQ8 would come to 3DS at some point. I am very very happy that I was right and I really hope this game comes to America. I have already given up hope on DQ7, but the costs for bringing DQ8 over should be cheap. Fall game?

I have no idea why the DQ games stopped getting localized. Wasn't DQ9 a big success???

.... I think it's time to buy Japanese systems.... and Rosetta Stone. =P

I love love love love love love love DQ XIII, what a magical game.

Having it on the 3DS would be super magical, especially since I don't have a PS2 anymore.

@NinSage
It seems like it would be the kind of thing that Nintendo would want to publish, surely they made money on DQIX on the DS, it seems like everyone was playing that game when it was released. So. Damn. Good.

I heard about the DQ VIII news last night. I'm curious what the two new companions will be and the new story elements. Probably not enough for me to buy the game if it released in the US, and it might actually have more chance of releasing here than VII did since I think VIII was better received.

@Hinph I don't think what fans do has much relation to what companies do, since companies have to pay people for their work. The DQ games have a lot of text, some of the most text-heavy games out there, so it isn't cheap. Not only that, but the characters have a lot of accents and flavour text, so they need some English scriptwriters as well to make it all work well.

Are you from the future?!

Coincidentally, Game Informer made this same typo in an article about DQ...
