Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

What do you press to unleash the special attack?

You press down/click the right stick. It's a little unintuitive and got me killed in a pinch when I couldn't remember how to activate it.

@Mop it up

Yeah, in terms of paint coverage, it's tops (at least in this demo). As far as I could tell, kills don't really DIRECTLY help you win (outside of giving you extra EXP I think), but they do buy you time by disabling an opponent for around ten seconds, and it gets them out of whatever ground you're trying to take, so it's still worthwhile. But yeah, I think a team full of Chargers would have a hard time getting enough paint coverage to stand a chance at claiming enough turf. They might be better in a supportive role with protecting a painting buddy. Or simply hanging out on a high point and keeping things clear for their team.

Still on the subject of rollers, did anyone else go up against a team of 4 rollers at times? It happened to us a few times, and we got stomped, except when we had rollers too. I'm curious to know if anyone figured out how to counter that team, because I was stumped.

I did like the four weapons here though, they certainly felt unique to each other and had different play-styles. I feel like they compliment each other well if teams have a mix of weapons. When the weapons are one-sided like that though, well, I guess I'll have to wait for the full game to find out how balanced that can be and how to counter it.

I can see a four roller team easily covering the most ground. I never had four, maybe three on a team. My own teams were always two or one.

Had fun! The roller did seem OP. I did my best when I used it. I'm hoping the final version will have them slowed down a bit. Especially since the small brush will be released in the near future, and from my understanding, it's like the roller but faster.

Rollers can't hit walls well--might be good to get some vertical coverage if the enemy team has lots of Rollers. I may try that tomorrow--we'll probably see a good number of them during the next shootout!

I still like them, though. They feel really unique and...Splatoon-y. Like with the Charger, I can get a sniper rifle in any old FPS, but the Roller is a pretty unique experience that's all about paint coverage, which makes it enticing even without the OHKOs.

I dig this a lot more than I thought that I would. I'm best with a charger... I'm dangerous picking folks off.

@ludist210

I dog this a lot note too.

EDIT: You corrected your post. Now I look like a fool!

That was crazy fun - I totally dog it a lot note.
The hour just flew by. And I only really saw about half of each map! I kinda want to be the scope guy, but I'm deffo worst with the scope. Blegh.

@Mop it up
I went up against a 4 Roller team, I'm pretty sure we lost but because I had Jr I could flick on the shield and get all up in their grills - pow pow pow!

Oooooh, now I'm getting excited to try this out in a couple of hours! May my internets be kind.

@r_hjort\

I'm tired as hell and need more sleep but I'll be in the chat in a second and I'll be joining you! (well sorta, the thing doesn't allow friend matchups right now)

@DrFinkelstein
Sleep is for the weak!!! Says I, who was too much of a wuss to join the first test fire because it was too early for me.

I am tired. But also ready to paint the town red! (or cyan, or orange, etc)

@TriforceBun

R_hjort and I just had a blast in the NegWorld Chat and online. Tons of fun. Will be there for the Splatty-Trinity.

Same!

I'm really starting to get the hang of this, I think. It's ridiculously satisfying to duck into your ink and shoot an unsuspecting opponent in the back (or face). Do not neglect Squid Mode! A little patience instead of constantly shooting can really make a difference.

I spent the hour using both Splattershot Jr and the Splat Roller, my two favorite weapons. Jr's Bubbler is a lovely little bit of insurance against pesky opponents, and the Roller is just a lot of fun. It benefits nicely from that hide-then-emerge strategy I mentioned.

I don't think the Roller is OP, though--I could deal with them pretty consistently (if anything, I got KO'd much more often by the Splattershot weapons) and they have some serious combat disadvantages in a lot of situations. I hope it doesn't become a "thing" where--like Little Mac--there's a newbie stigma attached to the Roller. It's inky Splatoon fun and I don't want to feel "guilty" for using one. Jr's still my number one weapon though.

I did way better overall this time, though. Won probably 3/4 of the matches.

I am a little concerned about the team element. Some players, like, always win, so the match is kinda determined basically by whose team they're on. I noticed it early today with a guy that kept bringing his team to victory. I guess that's how it goes. I'm wondering if there'll be some sort of pseudo-ranking system for Turf War.

Anyone use the D-Pad for communications? "Booyah!"

@TriforceBun

I only played with the Splattershot Jr this wave and for good reason... squid sneak attacks and coverage.

I agree that now I see how to handle them, roller is NOT OP. Plus the coverage they make is easy to counter. One loose roller though can be damaging so I glance at the map now and then.

I'm very impressed with Splatoon so far! The controls were far faster and more fluid than I had expected, and the gameplay was just a whole lot of fun. Non-stop action with platforming and stealth thrown in without anything clashing with the other aspects of it.

Next time I will have to try using the sniper rifle type shooter on Salt Spray Rig and see if that helps me any. Tried it out on Walleye Warehouse and did absolutely nothing beneficial for my team whatsoever. But sniping people down was satisfying!

I played the first hour couldn't the 2nd I don't know if I'll be able to pull myself out of bed for the 3rd.

Pretty fun. I'm surprised by how some people are so good at this already. How is this possible?
05/09/15, 15:43
@chrisbg99

I feel quite confident with this already. I think it's just a mix of people understanding the levels quick and the ease of use with the controls. Nintendo has made a game which is quite easy to jump into and yet could have a lot of depth.

I keep missing the events! Don't need to be sold on it though, I already have it preordered.
05/09/15, 16:17
I think they're doing a great thing by not focusing on fragging and kill/death ratios with Splatoon. I always liked the sound of that, but after playing the demo it feels like it works just as well as I'd hoped. Everyone can feel that they're contributing, and I don't think anyone will have to feel bad about themselves even if they happen to get splatted or if their team loses.
