Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

Yea clearly I lack knowledge and passion for Mario Kart.
Or you just like Mario Kart 8 more than Mop!

Personally I like MK8 a lot, but it doesn't really grab me the way Mario Kart DS did gameplay wise, something about the controls, it seems more "floaty" or something? Like, not as responsive, not as zippy. Does that make any sense? Probably not. I actually have no idea what I'm talking about because I've put probably 10 hours total into the game and I'm sure many of you have put 100s.

@Anand
Oh man, Ribbon Road cutest course ever, they really knocked it out of the park in terms of the visual design, Toy Story graphics for real y'all!

Not sure it's that fun to race on though, kinda like the Zelda course, and lot of the DLC courses, seems like clever visuals trump track design.

@Mop it up

Stop with the 59 fps rhetoric. You never would have noticed that if Digital Foundry wouldn't have pointed that out. Very few people would have.

Not that the rest of your post isn't valid, but it's like you're trying to find things wrong with the most recent update rather than enjoy it.

...it's like you're turning onto pokepal or something.

@ludist210

Is it even physically possible for the human eye to perceive the difference between 59 fps and 60 fps?
04/25/15, 21:38
@gojira You should be able to choose 200cc in the vs. mode and online, you just can't play the GPs on 200cc until you get the golds on 150cc.

@deathly_hallows Yeah, "floaty," that's a good word for how the control feels. I prefer the more tight control of the last couple games. I always had trouble in the DS game due to using a D-pad, but if that game used a stick then it would probably feel nice too.

@ludist210 I never did notice the 59fps until 200cc. I even forgot that was a thing, until I noticed some kind of slight stutter when going full speed on 200cc. I thought maybe it was just that the game was struggling to handle the speed, but then I remembered the 59fps glitch. My friend also noticed it, someone who wasn't aware of the 59 thing either. You're free to dismiss it if you wish, though I feel a bit insulted to be compared to Pokepal148. :P Please, let us not pretend that I said only negative things, because I didn't.

@Secret_Tunnel The reason why it's perceptible to some is because the 60th frame is a repeated frame, creating a stutter. Studies have shown that the human eye can perceive up to about 240 frames per second, and this is about a fourth of that.

It's really not so difficult. If you had to get three stars that'd be one thing but just finishing in first for the cup overall doesn't take much.

Okay, I thought Gold=three stars. I might be able to stomach going for first place. The item barrage at the end of races is really obnoxious in 150cc.
04/26/15, 16:56
Finally 200cc is clicking, I found the right kart combo and I can run through some tracks without even braking.
04/26/15, 22:34
@Mop it up

It was a joke, but your post seemed mostly negative towards the update. Nobody here is nearly as negative towards this game as pokepal...his hatred of MK8 is legendary.

I still haven't played the new tracks. I guess I should do that at some point.
04/27/15, 16:07
@Zero

They're great! Go for it!
04/27/15, 18:07
@Zero

Any of them? Then you're in for a treat.
04/27/15, 18:42
I've noticed that your results in 200cc don't give you credit for the other speeds (the way that three-starring 150cc would give you 3 stars for 100cc and 500cc). I guess it makes sense, as the physics are different, making it kind of its own mode in the same way that the mirrored tracks are. But it's still a little bit annoying. I find the AI a bit easier to beat on 200cc than 150cc, and I was hoping to cheat.
04/27/15, 19:22
@DrFinkelstein @ludist210 Nope nothing was busy pretty much all weekend.
04/27/15, 19:34
And, nevermind I'm not going to bother getting Gold Trophies. I was playing a cup and I already failed to get first place on the first race. The second race I was hit by two blue shells in the first two laps but still managed to keep in first place. After that I got the horn and thought that there was little chance of a third blue shell. As I was closing in to finishing the race with the horn in hand I thought I'd be fine. But the A.I. had other intentions. First they shot a red shell from close up so I didn't have time to react. Just as I manage to recover from that another racer bumps me and immediately hits me with a backwards shot green shell. I just turned off my Wii U at that point.

@ludist210 I'm afraid I don't see how my post was mostly negative, I listed several positive things and several neutral things. As my first impressions, it was just a sort of stream-of-consciousness thing I had going. The positive things include that I overall like the new tracks, I like the AC characters, I'm glad there's a new ATV and the retro tracks were better than I was expecting. I see that I forgot to flat-out say 200cc was a nice addition, but it could be inferred that way since I just listed one thing I found unfortunate about it. I don't think the DLC pack is great, but there are a lot of levels between "bad" and "great."

Perhaps my writing style may not make it clear enough what I consider positive, neutral, and negative, I've been trying to work on that.

The Roy Koopa Pimpmobile is getting destroyed by 200cc.

Alright tried them out. Impressions...

Crossing Cup

Baby Park - Not quite sure what they were going for here. I liked this course in DD but it seems a bit less crazy now? Maybe I need to play it with humans.

Cheese Land - A decent retro course. Probably one of my favorites from the GBA game, brought back in good form.

Wild Woods - This is probably my favorite in Crossing Cup so far. Just like the theme and the execution and everything.

Animal Crossing - Seems ok, although I'm not entirely sure what about it stands out outside of the theme. I notice four seasons in the icon... does it change based on season?!

Bell Cup

Neo Bowser City - Probably one of the better retro courses, lots of fun twists and turns and such.

Ribbon Road - Oh. My. God. They took a good but not amazing GBA course and just made it nuts. So awesome on every level.

Super Bell Subway - I like this concept and it's pretty fun, but it seems like it should be a bit longer?

Big Blue - Obviously love the theme (and music), and it's a pretty wild track so I love that. Almost too wild to get a good sense of in my first play though, was just constantly hitting walls.

Overall I'd say Bell Cup is definitely my favorite. Ribbon Road, Super Bell Subway and Big Blue may be my 3 favorite new tracks, and they're all in Bell Cup.

@Zero

It changes season every time you play it.
04/28/15, 05:29
After a bit more play I think the new version of Ribbon Road may be one of my favorite Mario Kart tracks ever. Definitely one of my favorite in 8.

I also tried out 200cc on the easiest cup. It wasn't too bad, but I can see how on harder cups it could be wild.

@Zero

I hold similar views. Definitely try 200 on later stages. It's much more challenging.
04/28/15, 20:17
Braking does NOT come naturally to Conzo.
A passer-by would swear I've never played this game before.

Edit: spelling does not come naturally to Conzo either: breaking? Get it together man.
