This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

I, too, was impressed with the sheer increase in speed.

I legit want to try a session with people playing all the 'curcuit' tracks with no items, just to see who truly is the best racer out there.

Old racing dynamics are pushed to the front in 200cc mode. Start corners wide, dip down tight, and finish out wide to maintain speed. It's a racing fan's dream come true to see these things in a Mario Kart game!

It's a whole new game at this speed. I really feel like you need skill to do well at 200cc... skills that I don't presently possess.

The new tracks are pretty good. The only one I could do without is Super Bell Subway, but it's not a bad track by any means. I'm really impressed with the GBA tracks...those are amazing.

Good gravy, 200cc is fast. And fun! A whole new wrinkle to the old formula.

This was a race I ran last night in 200cc and I barely won. It feels like the AI is also struggling with the speed a bit (you can see I won because the AI wiped out at the very end) like we are. It makes for less rubber-banding, in a way.

I guess I need to learn to brake more efficiently...but it's a fun challenge.

@ludist210

The animations are so awesome. It's very apparent with the Villager. Leaning forward in an effort to gain speed. Leaning into the turns. It's like watching my mom play Tetris.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Yeah, the attention to detail is pretty amazing in this game. I like watching replays almost as much as the actual races sometimes.

I think I'm in love with Ribbon Road's simplicity and charm. It's definitely one of my favorites from the new set of tracks.
04/24/15, 18:16
The new levels are fantastic, and 200cc is amaaaaazing! It's like a whole new game! Don't think I've had to focus this much on my driving technique since the SNES game. Brilliant.

It's very satisfying when a 200cc race goes well. Breaking and drift-boosting successfully through a sharp turn is actually pretty tough. Some tracks, like Yoshi Circuit, require solid racing maneuvers.
04/24/15, 21:08
It's almost like a 'serious' racing game. Except fun.

I tried out the new pack last night, here are my quick impressions.

-200cc isn't quite as fast as I was thinking, but it's still a noticeable increase over 150cc. I'm probably just too used to the super speed cheat in MKWii. Some tracks handle this speed better than others, so I only need to adjust my approaches some of the time. The only unfortunate thing about this speed is that I now sometimes perceive the 59fps stutter, which can actually be a little distracting.

-The AC characters seem to suit this game better than Link does, and they have some nice touches. Dry Bowser continues to be super lame. The vehicles are decent, but don't really do much for me. But at least they added an ATV this time.

-The new tracks are decent, but seem a bit lacking. The AC track looks nice and the season thing is cool, but the layout is kind of plain, it reminds me of Moo Moo Meadows. I kind of wonder if this one was designed with 200cc in mind since it's still easy to navigate at that speed and it makes it better. The forest one also felt like it was chunks of other tracks copy and pasted together to make a new track, I felt like I already knew the layout the first time I raced it and ended up driving it almost perfectly. Too many tracks use things like split paths, it's gotten old already, come up with some new gimmicks. The subway one has an interesting layout, but is weirdly visually plain. The only issue with this track is that I got stuck in a subway train, it makes me wonder how much they play tested these. The best new one is probably the Big Blue one, it's definitely better than Mute City and has more interesting F-Zero elements. I was disappointed to find out it doesn't have a cylinder section though, that would have been awesome.

-My first reaction to the retros is that these are some of the worst tracks in the series, but they ended up a bit better than I expected. Well, except Baby Park. While I don't mind the idea of a crazy item spam track in theory, it feels cheap to include this as a regular track, and makes it feel like this pack just contains 7. Neo Bowser City is awful in MK VII, but it's a little better here as it seems wider and the turns seem better somehow, and no oil spills. Still don't really like it though. For the two GBA ones, I expected them to be flat like the other GBA/SNES ones, so I was glad to see that they put more effort into them by varying the elevation and giving them banked turns and such. They still seem a bit plain compared to newer tracks, but they're not amongst my least faves like the other GBA/SNES ones. Though, the cheese one feels oddly reminiscent of desert tracks...

Overall, it's a decent pack, but I think I like the first pack more, and neither seem up to the quality of the main game. But for the price, I s'pose I shouldn't have expected them to be as good.

@Mop it up

Oh, Mop...

Just what are you looking for and what would make you happy? I personally feel these packs are a great value and so much to an already awesome game!
04/25/15, 00:26
@TheOldManFromZelda Not much, just more variety I s'pose. I've never liked the idea of retro tracks, and that has gone for all Mario Kart games, preferring to have new ones. Beyond that, I just don't think the general gameplay and control are as good as the last few Mario Kart games, and so just adding content doesn't matter much. If they put in a "Mario Kart Wii mode" of sorts, that would be awesome.

Attention? Just kidding! It is too bad you don't agree with most of us about how great these additions are!

When one is passionate and knowledgeable about something one tends to be more critical.

And by "one" I mean Mop.

@deathly_hallows

Yea clearly I lack knowledge and passion for Mario Kart.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

You have to have gold trophies in all of the non-DLC cups on 150cc mode.

Looks like I'm never going to play 200cc.
04/25/15, 07:32
@gojira

It's really not so difficult. If you had to get three stars that'd be one thing but just finishing in first for the cup overall doesn't take much.
04/25/15, 08:24
@gojira

It's worth doing. 200cc is really fun! Make a goal of getting golds on just 2 cups a day and you'll have it unlocked by Tuesday.

@Mop it up
Control?! Really??

Well, MK8 and MKWii are pretty different, so it's logical for both to have their proponents, but MK8 feels so much better than MKWii to me.

That said, 200cc mode has completely baffled me so far. I honestly didn't even remember where the brake button was.

That said, Ribbon Road is amazing. Was it ALWAYS supposed to be some kind of Hot Wheels track? I never got that impression from Super Circuit.
04/25/15, 16:46
I am having a blast with 200cc although my skills haven't translated over as smoothly as I expected. You need to do a lot of braking while drifting around corners, avoid using mushrooms and trick boosting at times, and overall just be more careful and look further ahead. It feels like a whole new ball game and I love it.
