(1) Chrono Trigger v. (5) Resident Evil (REmake) (2) Mega Man 2 vs. (6) Shovel Knight ------ I hope people give Mega Man 2 credit for being such a big influence of Shovel Knight when voting on this.

@JargonCan't say I entirely agree. Even if it were the freshest experience of its release year, being fresh now matters more to me than something being fresh 20 years ago.

@DrFinkelsteinWhy? And if you played MM2 now, it would feel just as fresh in relation to most games as Shovel Knight did. Except MM2 borrow heavily on SK, the way SK did from MM2.

(1) Chrono Trigger v. (5) Resident Evil (REmake) (2) Mega Man 2 vs. (6) Shovel Knight I really, really, really wanted to vote for Shovel Knight, but nostalgia has a strong hold on me. All four of these games are absolutely top tier.

(1) Chrono Trigger v. (5) Resident Evil (REmake) (2) Mega Man 2 vs. (6) Shovel Knight I quite like Shovel Knight, but I agree with Jargon--its Mega Man influences are clear, and MM2 (even though it's not my absolute favorite in the series) was quite a bit more original. Heck, MM9 was really the first game to go "daringly retro"--Shovel Knight did it very well too, but in a world where nostalgia is now king, its design choices aren't notably fresh in the way many groundbreaking NES games were.

@JargonBut I'm not just playing MM2 now for the first time. Just because I perceived both games were fresh experiences at their release doesn't mean I'm slandering one over the other for the purposes of this poll. I had a lot of fun with Shovel Knight this past year. I had a lot of fun with Mega Man 2 growing up. Plus there isn't a future expansion to Mega Man 2 that I'm eagerly anticipating right now. I'm not asking you to vote against your feelings but just as you wanted to make the point that the original has value for being the original, I presented the counterpoint that despite its influences, as far as fun recent games go, Shovel Knight was in a league of its own too. If you don't agree, cool beans. If you do, cool beans. I'm looking forward to the next section of the bracket regardless of the result.

@DrFinkelsteinIt just sounded like recency was a criteria for you, when I think you should try to vote in a vacuum in a tournament like this. Maybe I misunderstood and, regardless, you're free to vote however you wish.

(1) Chrono Trigger v. (5) Resident Evil (REmake) (2) Mega Man 2 vs. (6) Shovel Knight First one is easy, CT is one of the best games ever. Second one... actually still kind of easy. Shovel Knight is great but Mega Man 2 is legendary.

(1) Chrono Trigger v. (5) Resident Evil (REmake)(2) Mega Man 2 vs. (6) Shovel KnightThis is where my tastes differ from a lot of Nintendo fans. I've tried to play Chrono Trigger a few times but I never felt compelled to play for long. I've never been a huge RPG fan so maybe that's why. As far as REmake goes, that game blew me away. Yeah it looked fantastic, but the Crimson Heads really made you think differently how to play the game. They Lisa Trevor stuff they added was also really cool. Mega Man has never really appealed to me. I think it's because it's the type of game that feels like it needs to be played perfectly to do well. I like to think when I play games. If plan A doesn't work what's plan B going to be? But with Mega Man it seems like there's only a plan A and you just have to keep trying until you get it.
