ROUND ONE: Negative World March Madness: Third Party Edition (Liberty City) RESULTS
by

March 27, 2015, 01:01

Closest matchup: Four games, GTAV, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, and The Last of Us, advanced by a single vote in the tightest region yet.

Biggest Blowout: Portal 2 scoffed at the close matchups around it, blowing out Grand Theft Auto III in dominating fashion.

Biggest Upset Perhaps capitalizing on an overabundance of GTA games, Gran Turismo pulled off the upset over Grand Theft Auto V and advanced as a 15 seed.

PLEASE NOTE: Negative World March Madness: Third Party Edition will be taking a week long hiatus while I scout many of the games in their birthplace of Japan. Enjoy the break and get ready to vote when I get back!

Gran Turismo over GTA 5?

OKAY.

Muahahaha.

Sad to see Halo go so early. It brought me a lot of joy in college.

@Stephen

Gran Turismo is awesome and was a revelation when it came out. I haven't played GTAV but it looks like more of the same from that franchise.

Half of my choices made it once again. Unfortunately, only one of the three games I've played has moved on, which is Portal 2.

Honestly, I think that's the favorite (and not just based on its strong first round). Bioshock might have a chance though.

@Jargon

GTA V being more of the same is like saying Smash Bros for Wii U is more of the same. It is the formula working in its most effective form with the bar raised on content and ambition.

Not to take anything away from Gran Turismo, it's a fine game and pretty influential. I can't help this feeling though that it received a lot of votes because people who don't know much about either game voted for the option that wasn't GTA.

So glad The Last Of Us made it. Though I wish it wasn't up against the also amazing Bioshock. Bummer about the week-long wait... but have fun in NIPPON!

@Stephen

Speaking just for myself, I find the GTA series hard to like. It's so ridiculously raw and unpleasant, with a bunch of unlikable thugs selling drugs, killing people, throwing around curses that'd make a sailor blush. It's a similar reason I don't like stuff like Family Guy--there's only so much mean-spiritedness I can take before its world is just a place I don't want to be a part of. Gran Turismo never had that problem (nor did Smash Bros, for that matter).

Of course, I didn't vote last round so there's that. But the point still stands!

@TriforceBun I agree. I don't care how ambitious the games are, they're just not appealing.

@TriforceBun

The issue I take with that reasoning is that it says nothing about the opposing game. Based on what you said you might be inclined to vote for any game in the opposite spot regardless of how good it is just for the virtue it isn't GTA.

@Stephen

Smash Bros. Wii U is more of the same. The functional online is important, I'm not sure whether GTAV had any similar functional advancement that was such a big deal, but ultimately, if Smash Bros. Wii U was up against a groundbreaking game, it would be disadvantaged in that regard. I think you're underestimating Gran Turismo.

@Jargon

Ehh GTA online is a pretty huge advancement over what 4 had for multiplayer. I might be underestimating Gran Turismo but I think it's more likely people are selling GTA 5 short because they have some issue with the brand. The game is the best selling game ever not named Wii Sports or Tetris. Clearly it has a lot of appeal. Car simulators aren't exactly big here. The Project CARS thread is mostly a few people posting a trailer or something and people driveby trolling about pit stops or whatever.

@Stephen Don't sell Gran Turismo short either. It's the best-selling game on the PlayStation, surpassing even Final Fantasy VII. Its sequels are also some of the top-selling games on the other Sony platforms as well.

Also, sales =/= quality. GTA V may have a wide appeal but that doesn't mean it's lots of people's favourite game. For example, McDonald's hamburgers are the best-selling hamburgers, but I doubt very many people would name them as the best and would likely list several others above them. GTA could be like the McDonald's of videogames, if that makes any sense.

You're just inviting Shadowlink to chime in about burgers at KFC again.

That analogy doesn't work. People need to eat, different quality foods cost different amounts. In genres there can often be debate as to which game is the pinnacle. I would say that in the open world genre there is the biggest gulf between GTA and their nearest competitor. It's clear we just have a difference of opinion on the matter and if people feel like voting down GTA games because they don't like the tone well then that's their prerogative.

@Stephen Yeah, it isn't the perfect analogy because of the price, but even so, McDonald's as a restaurant is very popular. I believe it's still the number one fast-food restaurant despite the many options.

Perhaps a better comparison is Coca-Cola, which I think is still the number-one selling soft drink. But I doubt it's most people's fave, it just has a wide appeal in its blandness.

Again? Is this a thing I do regularly?

Hmm. 3 times last month. Although that was just that one thread. It's more scattered beyond that.

You should be really worried about me making another EXCITING PIT STOP reference.

What would the KFC of video games be I wonder?

Maybe it's because I actually liked GTA IV a lot, but GTA V just doesn't give me that special feeling I get when I remember playing Gran Turismo. I know you played a lot of GTA V online. I think we played a bit together. It was a lot of fun to play those missions with people. Other than that I only played GTA V online solo and that's really frustrating. Maybe if I had a better experience with it I would have a better opinion of the game as a whole.
