Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!
To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.) 1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes) 2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region 3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends! 4.) Customizable Move-sets 5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS! 6.) Online capable (and encouraged) 7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros! 8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages! 9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos 10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well. Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.
The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts. Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online. You know what? I am SICK of this game's single-player challenges. Most of them are fun, but now that I'm down to 20 or so left, it's really showing how horribly designed they can be, particularly regarding the AI and stuff.
Getting 10 characters at the end of Smash Tour is a nightmare. Any turn can randomly have you step on a trap, dropping 3 or more of your guys at once. Sometimes your opponents will activate a "Knock Your Opponent Away" item when you run into them, making you drop a bunch of fighters as well. It's like having a challenge in Mario Party to win 10 stars in Chance Time. It feels very luck-based.
And speaking of luck-based! "Beat 9.0 without losing a single life"!? Yeah, that challenge can kiss my butt. It's actually not the end boss that's the problem (a souped-up Ganondorf can do well on them), but the junk beforehand. The CPUs clearly team up against you in every battle, barely fighting each other, and they make a mad scramble for all the items. Good luck not dying if one of them happens to grab a Golden Hammer or Lugia-spewing Pokeball, or Dragoon, etc. Oh, and for all their dumb AI, they sure can power-shield and counter with the reflexes of an actual computer. Have fun fighting Ike! Even when you try to fight one guy at a time, they'll often be replaced by an "Intruder" who's Giant or Metal or something, giving you a big disadvantage.
That's not even touching "Clear All-Star on Hard with EVERY CHARACTER." Man, is this one an everlovin' pain times fifty-one. It was bad enough doing this with ONE character. While the AI's attacks are lowered to make it more fair, there's a bug in the game where the AI's projectile attacks still do the same damage and knockback. This means that characters like Olimar (who have only projectile-based moves) are suddenly super-deadly. Also, random weird moves like Ness's Yo-Yo, Charizard's Flare Blitz, and Villager's smashes have huge knockback too. And heaven help you if you get stuck in a stupid crazy stage like the F-Zero one, because all stage hazards are super-deadly as well. Once you finally make it through, have fun doing it again fifty more times! Especially with ol' previously-deadly Olimar, since said bug ALSO affects all of your projectiles not doing as MUCH damage to everyone.
This game has a great fighting system but they still haven't nailed down the 1P. All of these "hard" challenges are little more than an exercise in tedium, frustration, and luck-based hair-pulling. WHY AM I DOING THIS!? Kiss my butt, challenge board! I'm about to hammer the lot of you forever! |

Well, ever since I had a conniption over 1P mode, I've been playing a ton of 1v1 For Glory online. I'm having a good time, mostly because I feel that I'm actually improving. And a big part of the fun comes with playing around with a character a lot--in this case, Wii Fit Trainer! She used to be my number 5 or 6, but I've been addicted to using her in combat lately and I'm quite a fan. While her hitboxes are sort of short and she has a little trouble KOing, she's great playing defensively/disruptively, which is generally my preferred way to play (fun against aggressive "rushdown" opponents online). Sun Salutation is a terrific projectile, on par with Samus's charge beam (not as much killing power, but you can charge it in the air and it heals her). Header is amazing for keeping edgehoggers off your back or simply if you want to hang out at the ledge for awhile. Deep Breathing doesn't last long but it's fun to get one in from offstage and use its enhanced power for your other moves, and WFT has a lot of hidden talents like her fast running speed and the best crouch in the game (which can duck things like Falcon's dash and grab, two big staples of the Captain). Best yet, hardly anyone ever fights WFT so a lot of these abilities can take opponents by surprise! It's a similar reason why I like Mega Man so much. When you fight Foxes and Sheiks and Marios a lot, you get an idea of what they'll try to do (like Mario's down-throw to up-tilt business). But catching your opponent off-guard with a rarely-seen character is the very first advantage you get in combat, and can make all the difference! Wii Fit Trainer cares not for your tier lists. She's too focused on staying in shape, kickin' butt and looking good doing it. @nate38Mewtwo should be pretty cool. I liked him in Melee, but I have to admit that if I could add another character to this game, it sure as heck wouldn't be another darned Pokemon. Would've loved to see Inkling (Splatoon) land as a DLC character instead, just in time for her new game! |
