Don't forget about fast travel and the ability to easily change the time. Very useful for sidequests!

@ploot

I've used that a lot so far. As much as I like the environments so far, it's a lot of walking and waiting if I don't take advantage of those things. Still, I dig the battle system a lot. I've never backed down from a fight (yet).

So now the battle system has opened up a bit more, making fights a little more tactical and tougher to win, but a lot more fun to take part in. I got the Monado and watched helplessly as Fiora got killed by the large Mechon with a face. But I did a little gem crafting afterwards (which caused me to chuckle when my wife heard Shulk and Reyn going back and forth asking what in the world was that) and I'm ready to head to Colony 6.

So, maybe I'm reading into this too much early, but is Mumkhar somehow involved with the giant Mechon?

I'm wondering why I didn't play this earlier. I just defeated Xord in the Ether Mine and am now moving forward with Shulk, Reyn, Sharla, and Dunban (with Dickson as a guide). So good...I think I need to hop back to Colony 9 and do a little gem crafting though.

@ludist210 Nice job, I feel like Xord is the first time where the game "gets serious" and you actually have to start thinking about your equipment, gems, party setup, and strategy to win battles. Best to take your time and be prepared from here on out, all the side quests give you plenty of options for earning EXP and stuff.

@Mop it up

Thanks! That was a tough fight because my first instinct was "kill all the easy ones", but then more spawned...so I had to think a little outside of my "comfort zone" and build my chain gauge. It worked. The fight after his ether bath was a cinch. I think everyone was level 24-ish when we fought. I try to do every sidequest that I can when they're offered.

What do the clocks mean next to some of them? If I mess up and don't finish in time, can I try again later?
02/28/15, 01:00
@ludist210 The clock symbol quests are not timed. What that symbol means is that, if you progress past a certain point in the story, those quests will no longer be available. Usually said point is a long time later.
02/28/15, 01:02
@Mop it up

Do you know what that point is? Does the game tell you? Or do you only find out when it's too late?

That was my biggest derailment in this game, instead of progressing the story I went haring off trying to find/do all the quests.
02/28/15, 01:06
@Shadowlink I'm not entirely sure, it's been almost three years now (eesh, really? Where does the time go?) so I have troubling remember things. I don't think the game explicitly tells you when you come to the points where certain side quests will be gone after you do it, but I remember thinking that when I got to certain points it felt like what would happen next would make those side quests inaccessible. I know that sounds vague, but I don't want to try a specific example due to spoilers.

I know the game does explicitly tell you when you reach the point of no return at the finale, so you don't have to worry about that one. Just don't save after that point.

This is definitely not the kind of game where you're intended to go for 100% completion, which is kind of impossible anyway since you have limited inventory and can't do every side quest in one play.
02/28/15, 02:06
From what I remember, there are two points where quests becomw uncomplerable--one early on, and one very, very late. Not sure if the game tells you, but you'll know.
02/28/15, 18:33
@Mop it up I thought a few people here did do every side quest?!
02/28/15, 19:45
@Zero
I know someone that did all of them, I think. But like @Mop it up says, it takes more than one playthrough since some quests have to be chosen over others. How many here have done the whole NG+ thing?

I think I completed as many sidequests as possible in one playthrough, minus one that I accidentally declined to accept and didn't realize until later, when I had saved and moved on.
02/28/15, 19:58
Got it guys. I'm working through some sidequests right now (I did most of the available quests on the Bionis' Leg), but I made it as far as the Satori Marsh. My party (Shulk, Dunban, and Sharla) are all level 31 right now.

I can't get over how vast this game is. The Bionis' Leg alone is about the scale of Gran Pulse from FFXIII.
03/02/15, 16:16
@ludist210
I looooove the Marsh! The day/night cycle there is pure magic.There are also a few awesome sidequests that should be available from the start, if I'm not mistaken. Man, I'm kind of jealous now.
03/02/15, 16:24
@r_hjort

In the Marsh? Part of the reason I'm questing is because I'm trying to get the Giant's Key, but there's a boss in the Fortress of Exile that I need to kill in order to get to it first. I was a little weak, so I leveled a couple of times. Hopefully I'll be ready to take it on soon.

This game is really good.
03/02/15, 16:27
@ludist210
Oh yeah, that's one of the ones I'm talking about! I got my ass handed to me in the fortress at first too, but I switched up my tactics a bit and got through it after that. I basically just ran straight in, all guns blazing -- well, Sharla's gun blazing, anyway -- and that didn't go too well.

Glad you're enjoying the game! I bet that you will just like it more as you go, 'cause there's a metric crap ton of stuff still to be seen.
03/02/15, 16:43
@r_hjort

I lure the enemies out in groups until just the boss is left...then try for a chain attack (and that usually helps). I've whittled him down to a quarter health, but then he goes on a rampage.
03/02/15, 16:55
@ludist210
Sounds like you've got a good strategy going, so you should be able to whack him soon enough. I think I had Reyn do his tank thing during that battle, but that might not be any better than what you've got going with Dunban. I have to admit I kind of neglected ol' Dunban during the course of the game, but that's the beauty of Xenoblade I suppose, that you can adapt your party according to your playstyle and do really well no matter who you've got with you.
03/02/15, 17:02
@r_hjort

And inactive party members level (albeit slower) than active party members. Reyn actually has higher HP (close to 4000) but his defense is a lot lower than Dunban's.

I plan to swap those two interchangibly (but keep Shulk and Sharla active for now).
03/02/15, 17:19
@ludist210
How did that Gem crafting go, btw? You can compensate for a lot of stuff with good gems, as I'm sure you've noticed by now.
