Just curious if anyone else picked up this set? It only being $10 for the first week is a crazy good deal. I still have the physical version, but couldn't pass this up.

Man, I CANNOT fucking beat Ridley anymore. Which is really annoying since I've beaten this on the hardest difficulty before. This should not be a problem. But I've died 3 times.

I remember doing this with the Plasma beam last time, but it takes so fucking long. But trying to hit him with a super missile in that tiny window is practically impossible. By the time you manage to charge a shot for the super missile, he's almost recovered. I can only seem to hit him one in every 5 times. That entire second phase of the fight is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah I'm just plowing through on normal, which I guess is easier than the original games (but I beat them all on hard at some point anyway). Not going for 100% but I want to get whatever expansions I can get to make the game easier. Going to play Prime 3 after this and then it's off to Other M (or maybe Fusion first).

Where the f is Zero Mission??

@Super_Conzo

It's like Retro got a memo saying that the players needed to see Samus more. Don't stress too much with the Dark World. Your health regenerates when you're in a safe zone and there's usually those things you can shoot for health/missile drops close by.

Just got the Echoes Visor in Prime 2. Took me forever to realize I just had to make my way up the room with the rings. I saw that I needed to get to a elevator and was running all over the freaking place. I did get the Sunburst and Darkburst things, which is nice, but I can't imagine using them too often.

Now I have to go solve some sound based puzzles where I can, get the Anhiliator Beam, get the Screw Attack, get the Light Suit, and get the rest of those goddamn keys. I have one so far. I don't know what Retro's deal with this shit is.

Finding my stride with Prime 2 now. Scored the map for my area and now the game has even given me a hint. I love exploring, but it's always good to have a goal.

The Dark World is oppressive and claustrophobic, no doubt about it. I'm not saying that is a bad thing. In fact, it's a real change of pace and it really emphasizes the freedom you feel in Light Aether. I felt like I could breathe again when I came back. So yeah, I was wary at first but now I feel like I'm back in the saddle.

Prime 2 vets might have to help me here. When exactly does the game give you a hint? When you've been walking around too long? Or when you're at a certain location without a certain upgrade? It seems so arbitrary. More than other games in the series, I feel like it can be easy to get lost in the wrong area, probably because the world design in this game is harder to navigate than the original Prime.

Just got my PED suit in Corruption. I love how different all of these games are in certain ways. They're not all classic Metroid but I kind of love them for that.

Annd, finally got around to finishing off Ridley. That dick.

Had to fall back on the old and tired strategy of chipping away with the Plasma beam in the second phase of the fight. Trying to squish super missile into the ridiculously tiny window of opportunity was proving next to impossible & just getting me killed.

..And of course Metroid Prime goes down first attempt. On to Echoes.

Just took down Rundas in MP3. I'm wondering if I should've started on Veteran, but I guess I'll just try to not abuse Hypermode. I think I remember even on the hardest difficulty it made the game pretty easy, minus some annoying bullet sponge bosses.

Edit: Also I know some people took issue with the ship stuff in this game (I only mainly hate loading screens with it), but man, I think I'm almost at the part where you get to upgrade your ship's weaponry, and that kind of shit is just so goddamn cool. While these games lack certain elements from earlier Metroid games, they're just...they're so cool! I don't know what other word to use. Creative? Stylish?

Made my first dent in the Torvus Bog region. Man, those first 20 minutes played like a really tight Zelda dungeon. Great level design.

I'm feeling good about Echoes. Still can't believe how much GAME we got for such a low price!

Yeah I love Echoes as well.

Just took down Ghor in Corruption. I have mixed feelings about Elysia. On the one hand it's beautiful and really creative. I like how it's not very combat heavy. I like the lore of what this place was for the Chozo, and what it means to the whole story.

But I hate those ziplines. The map is pretty hard to read. Traversing this place is kind of a pain.

But yeah, I do like how quiet and abandoned it is. It's a nice change of pace.

Edit: I want to play either Other M or Fusion after this...I was thinking of Fusion though, because Other M's story just has no impact after Fusion. There's the big reveal in Fusion that the Federation is experimenting on Metroids but it feels like Other M just tried to have the same exact reveal.

@PogueSquadron if you're playing for story then just play fusion and watch Retsupurae's riff on Other M.

I actually like a good chunk of Other M's gameplay. If that game had let you run off on your own to explore the world more, I would've liked it a lot more. The story is just pretty terrible and kind of inconsequential to the overall plot IMO, especially since it kind of just retreads stuff that Fusion did.

Presentation wise, the game is still pretty cool to watch. I love Samus in Prime, but it IS pretty cool getting to see her do her acrobatics and all that. It's just a shame that she's coupled with such a terrible voice and writing.

There's one part in Other M that I thought was pretty awesome. It had you going through some sort of caves of these flying insect things. I wish the game had more of that kind of stuff.

I'll probably go Fusion and then Other M. I think you can generally not really go wrong when viewing/playing things in the order in which they were made.

Just finished up Prime 3.

Part of me wants to jump into Other M because I'm in the mood for something 3D, but part of me wants to play Fusion because Other M's story just doesn't really work that well for me, and playing them in a different order would be weird (aka why is it a big shock that the Federation is cloning or performing experiments on Metroids if Samus just went through that in the previous game, even if we make the assumption that in Other M, it was done by some subset or rogue Federation group?) Makes it kind of feel like the story in Other M just wasn't very well thought out, because it feels almost like a remake of Fusion in some respects.

I'd REALLY like to play Zero Mission but for some reason it hasn't hit the VC yet. I don't know what their deal is.

@PogueSquadron

We got it the other week, I hope you guys get it soon. I'm thinking of hijacking Seph's Retro Game Club again for the GBA Metroid games.

...I suppose I should PM him on that

Yeah I'm pretty curious to play it again, especially having just replayed the original. I never played the two in such close proximity.

@PogueSquadron

The good news is Metroid: Zero Mission has been released outside of North America. I can't remember if it was Japan or Europe. So I think that means it's pretty likely to come out here sooner rather than later.
03/20/15, 05:45
I buckled and got Earthbound with my remaining Club Nintendo points, so I guess I give that a go. Will definitely want to finish the last three games in the series soon though.

Still on Prime 2. Just getting to grips with the Sanctuary/Fortress area. Mostly puzzles at the moment, really good ones too. I just beat the Spider Ball Guardian which was a refreshing boss challenge.

Only playing in short busts tbh. Not feeling as hungry for this game as I was the first. I probs should have left it longer between games. How did you do it Pogue?
04/06/15, 02:21
Mostly because it's been a crappy couple of months so I've buried myself in Metroid games haha. I've beaten them all now except for Zero Mission (beat before on a coughemulatorcough) but waiting for a VC release. I beat Metroid 2 last year so it's still fresh in my mind, and Super Metroid quite recently as well.
